Why a Powered Trailer Taillight Converter is Recommended for a 2010 Mercury Marquis

Question:

I have a question on the # C59496 wiring harness shown for 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis the pictures make it looks like there is wiring run length of vehicle up to the battery. is this true and if so how is this wire run in a manner that protects it? is this kit really needed if someone is competent at wiring?

The # C59496 is the recommended powered taillight converter for your Grand Marquis. It does draw the power needed directly from the vehicle battery rather than pulling it through the vehicle's taillight circuits. The direct battery connection provides a more reliable power source, plus it serves to isolate the vehicle wiring from that of the trailer, protecting it from any short circuits.

The 2010 Grand Marquis uses a combined wiring system which combines the brake lamps and turn signals onto a single circuit, therefore, a simple trailer like # 18252 could be used, but I don't recommend it because you'll lose the circuit protection offered by the # C59496.

The simplest way to route the power wire is under the vehicle. There's no single recommended route, just avoid the exhaust system and anything moving like suspension and steering components. I'll link you to an FAQ article that describes this further.
