Installing Disc Brakes on 7,500-lb Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

I am going to install disc brakes on a boat trailer that currently has no brakes. Does it matter what axle i install the brakes on, front or rear axle. Trailer has 2 3500 lb axles. Both axles have the mounting flanges. Thanks

If you will install disc brakes on only one of the two axles on your tandem axle boat trailer you will install them on the rear axle if it uses a leaf spring suspension. Naturally, it would be best to install brakes on both axles, or at least to install a 5200-lb-rated set of brakes on the one axle. Your braking capacity needs to match your trailer's weight capacity.

You might want to have a look at the linked article which describes much of the process of selecting components to install disc brakes on a trailer that does not have them. You can actuate your new disc brakes with either a hydraulic surge coupler or with an electric-over-hydraulic actuator like # HBA16 that requires you to also have a compatible brake controller in the tow vehicle.

I included a link to our main page for 3500-lb disc brake kits, such as Kodiak # K2HR35DS, which fits 4-bolt brake flanges and which is suitable for use with 13- to 16-inch wheels with a 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern.
