Recommended Components For Flat-Towing A 1997 Jeep Wrangler Behind A Motorhome

Question:

I want to flat tow a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with a manual transmission behind my motor home. I am looking at the Blue Ox Alpha tow bar. What additional equipment/parts would I need to purchase besides the tow bar? Do you offer all parts in a package? What about a break-away system?

When you decide to flat-tow a vehicle there are 5 things needed. You will need base plates for the towed vehicle, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the towed vehicle, and now most states require a supplemental brake system.

If you have a double tube bumper on your Wrangler the base plates I recommend are part # DM9517046. If you have a U-channel bumper, the base plates you will need are part # DM9518045.

The Demco Commander tow bar, part # DM9511012, would work well with the base plates. The safety cables are also included with the Alpha tow bar.

For lighting I recommend the Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring, part # RM-155. This uses the Wrangler brake, running, and signal lights without tapping or splicing into the wiring.

The supplemental brake system I recommend is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR along with the # RM-88400. This is a radio frequency controlled proportional brake system that depresses the brake pedal with the same intensity as the pedal in your RV. The breakaway system is included with this brake system.
