Functions of Black and Gray Trailer Wiring Plugs Under Back of 2013 Nissan Frontier

Underneath the truck is 2 plugs, gray is used for the lights on the trailer, but what the heck is the black one for?

On your 2013 Nissan Frontier, like you said the gray plug is for the trailer running lights, brake lights, and turn signals. The black plug handles all other possible functions including 12 volt accessory power, reverse lights, and brake controller output. If just adding a 4-Way these functions are not needed.
If you wanted all the functions you would need to add a 7-Way using # 118266.
