The Thule SnowPack ski and snowboard carrier # TH7326 will handle thicknesses up to about 1-1/4 inches. Because the inside portion is made of soft rubber, I think it would work fine transporting fishing rods without any damage. It will fit round, square, aero/elliptical and most factory crossbars. The Pull Top is 34-1/2 inches wide so it should leave room on your roof rack to transport a surfboard.

Depending on how many fishing rods you will be transporting, a pretty neat alternative is the RodBunk fishing rod carrying system # IMF17727 for trucks and SUV's. It's easy to install and can adjust to accommodate various types of vehicles.

I included a couple video reviews for you too.
