I would be happy to explain how to wire a brake controller in your 1997 Chevy 2500. You will need three things to complete installation. First, of course, a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our most popular and highest rated brake controllers. Next, you will need Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118315. Finally, you will need a 7 and 4 way installation kit, # ETBC7.

Start by installing the Tow Ready wiring. This is a simple plug and play connection that plugs in line with your trucks taillights. I have included the instructions below.

Next, you will connect the 4-Way plug on the Tow Ready wiring to the 4-Way on the ETBC7. The next step is to run the wires from the ETBC7. First, ground the white wire to the vehicle frame. Then, connect the white wire on the duplex cable to the blue wire on the 7-Way. Do the same for the black wire on the duplex cable to the black wire on the 7-way.

Route the duplex cable under the truck, and up to the engine compartment near the battery. Separate the two wires and route the white wire through the firewall into the truck cab. Attach the black wire to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker.

Next, connect the white wire you ran into the cab, to the blue wire on the brake controller. Connect the brake controller white wire, through the firewall, to the negative battery terminal using any left over wire. Route the black wire through the firewall, and connect it to the positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp breaker (see brake controller instructions for which breaker to use) using left over wire.

Last, find the wire on the stop light switch, above the brake pedal, that carries a signal only when the brake pedal is pressed. Connect this wire to the brake controllers red wire.

It sounds like a lot of work but really is not too difficult. I have included a link to a brake controller FAQ and two videos that should help.
