Trailer Hitch And Wiring Recommendations For 2002 Chevrolet Tracker For Towing Small Trailer
Question:
I was wondering if there is a place to mount the wiring plug4 pin flat. I am also wondering how hard it would be to wire in a 7 pin trailer plug on my 2002 Chevy Tracker. I am aware of the 1500lb max towing capacity. The reason I want the 7 pin is for my 1000lb off-road trailer with electric brakes. When off- roading I have electric brakes to keep the trailer from pushing on down hills. Thank you for your assistance.

Since you said you are planning on towing a small trailer with brakes behind your 2002 Chevrolet Tracker, I will make recommendations for all of the items you will need.
First, the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C13517 is a good choice for a hitch on your vehicle. This is a Class lll hitch and has a 2 inch receiver opening. Even though you are limited by the towing capacity of the vehicle, installing a hitch with a 2 inch receiver gives you many more options for hitch-mounted items like bike carriers, cargo baskets, etc.
You will need a ball mount and hitch balls to go with the hitch. I recommend a ball mount like part # C45010. This ball mount features a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop. for a hitch pin and clip I recommend part # PC3. If you need a locking hitch pin I recommend part # e98880.
If your trailer has a 1-7/8 inch coupler, the hitch ball I recommend is part # 19260. For a 2 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 63845.
Since the trailer has electric brakes, you will need a brake controller and wiring. The brake controller I recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to install and operate.
You will need a 7-way connector at the rear of your Tracker for the trailer with brakes. I recommend part # ETBC7. The # ETBC7 has a 4-way and a 7-way connector. The # ETBC7 includes a mounting bracket that is typically installed on the frame at the rear of the vehicle. For a no-drill option for mounting the # ETBC7 I recommend part # C57202. This bracket uses a hose clamp to secure the bracket to the hitch. I have attached a drawing that shows how the wires should be run when installing the # ETBC7.
If you do not have a 4-way connector on your Tracker I recommend Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # C55372. This simply plugs into the connection point that is located behind the driver side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
I have attached links to some helpful articles and videos you can check out. I also attached links to some product pages you can take a look at for accessories you can use when not towing.
