Can 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Handle the Yakima # Y62VR Hitch Mounted Enclosed Cargo Carrier

Question:

According to another answer on this same product, the assembly/box weigh 110 pounds in total. Since my planned hitchs capacity etrailer part # C11240 is a 200 pound tongue weight, it would seem this leaves only 90 pounds to put into the box. Is this correct? It seems that it would be easy to overload in a such a sizeable box.

The trailer hitches we offer for your 2014 Chevrolet Sonic are all Class l hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening, like the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C11240. A note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt.

All of the Sonic hitches state they have a 200 lb tongue weight capacity, but that rating is for the hitch only. Many times, a vehicle will have a lower weight capacity than the hitch. You always want to stay within the limits of the lowest rated component.

You will want to check your owner's manual or with your dealership to make sure you do not exceed the weight capacity for your vehicle.

The Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier - 2" Hitches - 10 cu ft - 100 lbs # Y62VR is rated to be used with Class III, or IV hitches with 2" receivers only. I cannot recommend this cargo carrier for your Sonic due to the Class l rating of the hitches that fit your vehicle.

For your Class I trailer hitch receiver, We have three great options:

The 17 X 46 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18145 has side rails and an open-floor design that will prevent grime buildup. It would be best for carrier larger items that would not fall through the slats. This carrier weighs 28 pounds.

The 19X 47 Curt Carrier # C18110. It does not have side rails but includes an easy clean mesh floor. This carrier has an angled 3-3/4" rise shank to help with ground clearance. This carrier weighs 30 pounds.

Finally, the 20 X 47 Reese Carrier # 63155 has side rails and a mesh floor. This one has a shank rise of 3". This carrier weighs 44 pounds.

All of of these carriers have rugged steel construction. You would need to subtract the weight of the carrier from your tongue weight to see how much cargo you could add.
