Recommended Hitch for Light Duty Towing With 2015 Honda CR-V

Question:

I know a lot about automobiles and Hondas in particular but absolutely nothing about trailer hitches. Given that the CR-V towing capacity is only 1500 lbs and my towing needs are occasional and light which hitch would you recommend? Thanks

If the option is available, I always recommend folks go with the more common 2 inch receiver offered by the Class III hitch. Granted, your CR-V has a limited towing capacity, but I'd personally feel more secure using a hitch with extra capacity even if I couldn't use it. Also, if you might be planning to use the hitch for accessories like a cargo carrier or a bike rack, there will be many more options available for a Class III hitch. There usually isn't a huge price differential between the lowest rated Class I and the Class III.

If all you'll be doing is towing, the Curt Class III, part # C13119 would be a good choice. However, their warranty stipulates that non trailer loads (bike rack or cargo carrier) would need a stabilizing strap, part # 18050. No problem, right? But on vehicles with a spoiler or lip on top of the hatch lid don't work well with the straps because there's no good place to attach them that won't have some of the weight of the hitch accessory bearing down on the spoiler/lip. Because of this, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 75742 which doesn't require a strap.

To complete your towing set-up, you'll also need the following:

Trailer wiring harness, part # 118561
Ball mount, part # 2753
1-7/8 inch trailer ball # 19260
2 inch trailer ball # 63845
(Trailer coupler will have necessary ball size stamped into it)
