Any trunk rack will make contact with your vehicle's painted sheet metal. The key to reducing any potential damage to the finish is to keep the rack and vehicle very clean. Any trapped dirt or road grit can act like an abrasive - sort of like sandpaper - and could dull the paint finish if allowed to remain between the rack an car. Removing the rack when not in use will also help.
