Installing Taillight Converter Tow Package Trailer Wiring Harness on 2000 Chevy Silverado

Question:

Really Confused.. I purchased a 2000 silverado 1500 and hooked up a trailer and the brake lights dont work on the trailer. Turn signals, running lights all work. Under the truck the harness has 4 plugs that plug into a panel on the back bed. It seems someone has spliced into this harness with a 4 wires plug. This model has the separate turn signal and brake turn signals like in the European trucks. No converter . I do not recall seeing the tow plug up by the spare tire. What harness do you suggest?

Typically, your truck would have been equipped with tow package wiring that would have already been converted. It sounds like somebody's come along and messed with that.

You can begin by checking for the original tow package wiring. Look for a wiring harness that terminates in bare wires located above the spare tire or on the driver's side frame rail alongside the spare. The plug you refer to won't be there, as GM didn't start using that until the 2003 model year. If the wiring is still there, check them for function by using a circuit tester on them as each turn signal function is activated. The yellow wire should power up with the left turn signal and when the brake pedal is pressed. The green wire should power up with the right turn and when the brake pedal is pressed. The brown wire should show power with the running lights.

If you find the tow package wiring and it's functional, you can install a 7-way/4-pole trailer connector like part # HM40975-11998. The wiring pigtail would install as shown in the table on the bottom of the product description page for the connector.

If you cannot find the tow package wiring, you'll need to hardwire a converter like part # C59496 directly into the taillight circuits. I'll link you to an install video showing the converter being installed on a different vehicle. Even though the vehicle is completely different, it will give you a good idea of what the install involves.
