Tire Chain Recommendation for 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel with 275/70-R17 Size Tires

Question:

I need to get a set of tire chains for my 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7 liter Diesel. It is 4 wheel drive so I would get two sets for all four tires, but I want to make sure that my truck does not have too much torque for the chains I purchase and break them while in use. I have BfGoodrich TAKO 2 All Terrain tires in size 275/70/R17. Which chains would work for my truck? I was looking at the glacier bay twist v bar chains with cams, but dont know if those are good for my particular truck or not.

I recommend your first step when considering tire chains on your 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel truck be a check of the owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding their use. Many passenger cars, and some trucks, are limited to using special low-profile S-Class chains that do not require too much wheel well clearance. Before purchasing any tire chain check your vehicle's manual carefully and if in doubt speak to your local dealership. When it comes to using tire chains on a vehicle the auto maker gets the final word.

Two informational articles are linked for you; these will give you good background on the types of chains available and their various features. These should help you consider the advantages of the different chains that will fit your tires and your driving application. There are chains intended strictly for on-road use, while others can be used both on- and off-road.

Chains also differ substantially in how easy they are to put on. I recently completed tire chain training here at etrailer and I can tell you first hand that some chains are MUCH easier to put on than others. The point is that chains that are a pain to put on will not likely get used, and so will do you no good at all if you do actually need them. Consider selecting chains that offer assisted tensioning as these are easier to use. Using chains on all four tires, so long as this is allowed by the auto maker, is an excellent strategy for improving both forward traction and steering and braking performance.

The provided link will show you all tire chains that fit your 275/70-17 tires. Among the options is the Glacier chain set you referenced, part # PWH2828SC, which are rated for on- and off-road use and which are not S-Class compatible. Their V-bar links will provide good bite on ice and their built-in cam tighteners simplify making a proper fit.

If your application is on-road only and you want a heavier-duty chain that will last longer you might consider the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains # PWE2228SC. These chains feature reversible 5.6mm nickel manganese alloy link construction that will provide a longer useful lifespan since they can be used on both sides. In truly bad conditions these will perform better than the Glacier chains.
For a powerful truck like yours I strongly recommend these Pewag chains. Please note Pewag makes the Glacier product line. I have linked videos for both chains for your review. With either I suggest using rubber tensioner # PW99.

All tire chains require reduced driving speeds, typically no more than 35-mph. If road conditions are bad enough to justify tire chains, then they are also bad enough to merit reduced driving speed.
