Which Snow Chains for Use on 2013 GMC Sierra 4X4 for Use on Gravel Road

Question:

I have a 2013 gmc Sierra 4x4. My camp is about 5 miles in on a gravel road on which I have to go up and down some considerable grades on the mountain. Can I put chains on the front tires or just the rear wheels. Was thinking I would buy two pair for max stability and traction control in snow and ice.

Snow chains can generally be used on either all four drive wheels or only two, but in terms of maximizing braking and steering control you are absolutely on the right track in considering chains on all four tires. Since you are going to be driving your Sierra on hilly off-road terrain I do suggest you equip all four tires with chains. This will help keep the truck handling characteristics consistent from uphill to downhill grades.

The choice of tire chains for your vehicle depends on your tire size. Your Sierra can be equipped with 6 different tire sizes, so I have included a link to our main snow chain page where you can select your tire size to see appropriate chain options for that tire. For example, if you happen to have 265/65-18 tires and click on that option you will then be able to choose between chains designed for on-road-only use and ones designed for on-and-off-road use, which is what you will want for your gravel road application. At the left-hand side of the page you will find the various filters that will help you narrow the product results to those with the features that you prefer.

For example, the chains you referenced, Glacier # PWH2828SC would be a great option on all tires (if yours are 265/65-18 size) since these chains include ice-gripping studs. You will need to order two pairs of chains to equip all four tires.

I have linked an installation video for this product as well as two articles on tire chains.

It is a good idea before ordering chains to consult your owners manual (or with your dealership) to verify that there are no restrictions regarding use of tire chains from the vehicle manufacturer.
