Cleaning Rusty Bolt Holes to Install Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13068 on 2002 Honda Odyssey
Question:
What tap do you use to clean the threads of the frame build in nuts in a 2002 Odyssey? See product I bought from etrailer. I need to tap the frame build-in nuts because they are very rusted. I need to know what tap to buy the thread of the bolts is very thin - not sure what it is. Thank you

I want to start by thanking you again for your recent order. We appreciate your business.
When it comes to installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C13068, on your 2002 Honda Odyssey, it is best to just clean out the bolt holes on your frame instead of using a tap. You will want to start by soaking the bolt holes on your frame with a penetrating lubricant like WD-40. Let the lubricant soak in and then use a wire brush, like part # 814092, to scrub out the holes and free the opening of rust. This may have to be done a few times but should allow the bolts to fit more easily. I have attached a short video that covers the steps to cleaning weld nuts.
If you find that you still can not clean the rust out of the weld nuts and need to use a tap, you will need a 12mm tap with a 1.25 thread pitch. I still recommend soaking the weld nuts with a penetrating lubricant before using the tap to make the job easier. Please keep in mind that weld nuts, especially on an Odyssey, can bust loose if too much pressure is exerted on them so you will want to be careful when cleaning and using the tap. Just in case you run into this issue, I am including the link to our video which goes over removing and replacing a weld nut.
