Brake Controller Installation on 2013 Ford F150 w/ Factory Equipped 4-Pole Trailer Connector

Question:

My son has a 2013 F150 with a flat 4 plug. He needs a brake controller. At both fuse boxes, it came with fuses in the trailer brake spots. Under the dash it has the plug for a controller. Does he need to run a blue wire to the rear or is there one in the factory harness? Thanks

If the truck has the plug under the dash, the blue brake controller output wire should be ran to the rear of the vehicle. If you follow the wiring for the 4-pole from the rear bumper toward the front of the truck, it should plug into a connector on the frame rail on the driver's side behind the rear wheel. On the side of this connection closest to the front of the vehicle, you should be able to find the blue wire.

You'll need a 4-pole to 7-way adapter like part # 37185, a brake controller and a brake controller wiring adapter, like part # 22292. The adapter would plug directly into your 4-pole, with 4 wires remaining. The white adapter wire would ground to the vehicle frame. The purple wire is usually used for reverse lamps. Connect this wire to the reverse lamp circuit if you need it, otherwise just bundle the wire up out of the way. The blue adapter wire connects to the blue brake controller wire and the black adapter wire connects to the red or orange wire that should be on the frame rail in the same wiring harness as the blue wire. You'll need a 2 foot or so length of 10-2-1 to join the two adapter wires to the wires in the harness. You can see this whole procedure in the video I've linked for you.

For a brake controller, the Tekonsha Primus you referred to would be an excellent choice. Unless you're wanting to tow a trailer that uses an electric over hydraulic braking system, the Primus would work great for you. If you need a electric over hydraulic compatible controller, go with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885.
