These Titan Chain diamond-pattern chains are great winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these chains are perfect because they're durable and easy to mount. And they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Slide chains behind the tire

2. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.

Make connections behind the tire

3. Connect the ends of the cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Attach green hook to yellow side chains

4. Around front, connect the 2 ends of the yellow side chain using the green hook at the top of the tire.

Feed tensioner through clips

5. At the bottom of the tire, feed the silver tensioning chain through the red channel bracket and pull it taut. Then run the tensioner through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire.

Recheck tension

6. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire. Pull your vehicle forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the tension.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

The chains have arrived on time. Will be doing a few dry runs here in the next few days. Then our adventure into the north, snow and mountains will commence. We will update this post after our adventures and see how everything performed.

I would highly recommend that you do not drive on dry pavement with Tire Chains. Tire chains are designed specifically to be driven on ice and snow, if you drive on dry pavement you will very likely damage the chains. While there is no specific depth that the snow needs to be, only what is enough to keep the chain from making contact with the pavement. Soft snow could be 3 inches, while harder snow 1 inches, ice should be half of an inch, etc. It just depends on the condition of the snow. To try out the chains, all you need to do is put them on the tire to make sure they fit snugly which you could do in the garage.

Chains arrived very quickly. Price was excellent, and chains are as advertised. Attractive and convenient carrying case make it easy to keep them handy in vehicle. The online installation video was good - definitely watch it before your first install. Definitely do a trial run before you really need them! Installation is pretty easy if the chains aren't all tangled up when you take them out of the case. So, take care when you put them away and it will make it easier the next time you use them. I would call these chains "light-duty" - the links are smallish. I wouldn't recommend themif you use chains a lot, but they are fine for me: I just need them those rare times when I really need to be out in chain-up conditions.

For me I am sure the product is excellent, however I am most satisfied with etrailer’s customer service! I have not purchased tire chains before and after placing my initial order I realized I did not order the best chains for my vehicle and that I did not need chains on all four wheels! Customer service was very understanding and quickly fixed my issue! I am very happy with the experience! I have not yet used them, hope I don’t have too, but thankful I have them!

Chevrolet Colorado

We used the tire chains when travelling through southern Colorado over the Christmas period. We actually got bogged on the side of the road after an unscheduled stop. Even stuck in the mud and snow, the chains were really easy to fit with minimal trouble and got us out of the snow in no time. Really happy and fit perfectly.

2015 Toyota Camry

I just received my Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains. These are a nifty alternative to chains that require jacking up the car and they look a lot more functional than cable chains. I just finished trying them on my 2015 Camry. It took a bit of time to untangle them out of the carry case but once that was done, the instructions were super helpful. I am closing in on 70 years old and had no problem getting the chains on. However, I did need to back out of my garage and re-tighten. My husband took about half the time (but I was coaching him!). I think in a snow situation, I would opt to untangle each chain in the back seat, then lay them out. Also, note that a small tarp will fit into the carry bag. I'm now feeling a lot better about heading over the mountains over the holidays. Thanks for a great product.

Excellent company to deal with. Great customer service and product ships quickly. My most recent experience was related to on-going part replacement delays for a snow chain set I purchased last year. The issue was resolved with an entirely new chain so I at least have a fully functional and complete set on my next snow trip ensuring effective and safe travel. Thank you so much for on-going great service and support.

2016 Honda Civic

I bought these chains prior to heading up to the Southern California mountains. They arrived extremely quick (about 3 days) after I ordered. The snow chains were very useful when I ran into a patch of ice on the way up the mountain. They are very easy to install/uninstall, unlike many of other types of snow chains you will find on the market. I would definitely recommend these snow chains to anyone heading up to the mountains during the winter that does not have a 4-wheel drive vehicle equipped with snow tires.

Honda Accord

So far so good, I received the chains in a timely manner and they look great, came in a nice case. I have a V6 Honda Accord and was worried about wheel clearance with the chains on. Upon inspection I can see that the links are large enough to be effective but small enough to clear the wheel well - his under (no snow) conditions. I will finish initial review after I drive around.

Jessica was very helpful selecting which chains to purchase. They fit well, the price was very competitive and arrived quickly. I had to deliver some material to a mountain location and needed to go down a couple of steep inclines. I put chains on all four tires of my truck and one axle on the trailer. I didn't have any slipping or sliding on an icy snow-packed road.

by:

I put these chains on and they lasted less than one slow-driving (under 30mph) mile. Despite proper installation, both of them broke in different ways (seems like multiple weak points). One use and they failed me, in snow, got me deep into a predicament that I had to work quite a bit to get out of. I am worse off than when I started - and I had to pay a lot to be stranded. In my assessment, these chains are garbage and actually quite [not allowed to make "suggestions that may affect safety/warranty]. Contacted etrailer about it, brushed off referring to the 30-day limitation. There is no concern for proper function, likely just the bottomline. Value your money and go elsewhere.

I have a 2018 Suburban Premier with the 22” wheels and 285/45R22 tires. I purchased two sets of these chains (four chains in all) for a trip to Mammoth California at the beginning of March 2023 during a record snow season. I was really glad that I had them as I had them all four wheels for most of a week, taking them off and putting them on at least 5 times. Part of the time I had them on I was pulling a 6x12 UHaul trailer. These chains worked flawlessly and provided a huge amount of extra traction on top of my Michelin Defender LTS M/S tires. I was a bit concerned that using the chains may cause some damage to may alloy wheels, but that did not happen. If you put them on correctly, the wheels don’t get damaged at all. The etrailer videos that show how to put the chains on accurately portray the ease of doing that. Even after a week of pretty constant use, the chains don’t show much wear at all. I would absolutely buy these again.

by:

For ease of installation, these snow chains are great! The only problem I had was on my right rear, the tensioning chain could not be tightened enough going through the rings the way the instructions showed. I ended up going to the far ring first, then back to the middle, then across the wheel. Only for tensioning (doesn’t pull the chains offsides at all), so I think my solution worked well. Kelsey S. was a wonder to work with! This was my first foray into snow chains, so she guided me through my options, explaining every benefit and need for the ice/snow conditions expected. I put the chains on my 2015 Ram 2500 4x4 long bed relatively quickly considering my inexperience.

by:

I'm very happy with my snow chains! The chains are easy to install, the carrying case is great, the instructions are very clear, and George and Carol from etrailer provided great customer service! The chains are well-priced and are comparable to the Grizzlar Diamond tire chains.

by:

No snow yet but the practice installation went great! So simple my 6 year-old helped make sure I was following the instructions properly. Time will tell if I need them and how they work in the upcoming North Idaho snow plowing season. Fit great on my 275/70R18 tires. I appreciate the carrying case they came with, also!

by:

These chains were amazing! I was a bit hesitant to go with chains over cables due to the car's manual saying to use cables, but after talking to Bob at etrailer, and watching the install videos, I went with them (on all four tires) and am glad I did! We went up to Yosemite for the New Year, and it snowed the day we drove in. We got through the gate into the park without needing chains, but once inside, the roads started to get covered, and though we have AWD, we don't have snow tires and the chains seemed like the best option. We pulled over and had the chains on all four tires within about 20 minutes. The car ran like a tank through the snow (and later, ice-covered roads) and I'm really happy we went with the chains rather than cables. After putting on the chains, we drove about 100 yards to check and tighten them. They were actually pretty tight - only had to tighten one. They really really came in handy driving through the Yosemite Valley, and the email responses I got from Bob prior to buying these showed me great customer service. The shipping speed was top notch as well, and overall, I'm happy that we went with etrailer to get these chains for our snow-covered trip to Yosemite.
