  • Made in the USA

Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These pewag ladder-patterned chains are great winter weather chains for your SUV, truck, or 4WD vehicle. Not only do the grooved square links dig into deep snow and ice better than rounded or standard square links, but the reversible design of these chains also allows them to wear under standard use much longer than other chains. And if you're partial to American-made products, you'll be happy to know that these are made in Colorado.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

Twist cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Recheck tension

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Shipping was extremely fast , received my order in 2 days . Chains are high quality and should last a long time. Bought these for all 4 tires of my ‘01 Ford F-350 , tires are BFG All Terrains Lt285-75-R16. They fit perfectly, will probably be cutting 2 links off of the backside where the two ends hook together. The chains came.2 per sack with a cam tightening tool in each sack. I modified the tool to make it easier to use when your hands are frozen.

The chains fit our Wrangler Rubicon well, and are really substantially built. I like the cam tensioners. I might add a rubber tension too just to keep everything tight when driving. Really appreciate the quick delivery!

Pontiac Montana

2nd set of the Pewag tire chains I purchased here in the last four years. Loved the first set, still use them here in Wisconsin and Montana. Needed to purchase another set to fit some larger oversized tires. Amy helped me out deciding which chains would best fit my needs and I still can't believe how fast she turned the order around and had them at my house the day before I was leaving for Montana. Can't get better service than that.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

Bought these tire chains for my Ford F-350. Had some days last winter when the driveway below the hill was all ice and plowing would be impossible without chains.
Perfect fit, easy installation and those cam locks are awesome for a tight fit.

2009 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

These are by far the BEST tire chains I've ever owned. These are for plowing in Maine winter, and these chains are massive! Talk about high quality and super heavy duty!
I put them on with ease. Fitment is perfect.
If you want the best chains on the market, get pewag. The camlock tool is equally heavy duty, big & strong.
I'm very happy with these awesome chains. Nothing's indestructible, but these certainly feel like it.

by:

Great service and the tire chains are easy to put on.

by:

These are top quality chains.
They are
made of alloy rather than low carbon steel; which can break when you most need them, and even damage your rig.
Do yourself a favor, and invest in good quality USA made chain. Think about it. If you need chains, you are already in a bad situation to begin with. Spend the extra money to buy real chains. It's worth it.
The square link works very good on ice and snow, and also works great as mud chains for outdoorsman who spend time in the wilderness.

by:

Ordered chains on a Fri afternoon (Pacific Time) and was a little concerned about delivery before my trip the following Thu. Pleasantly surprised to receive a response later that Friday evening that order was processed and already on its way. Chains arrived the following Tuesday with standard shipping. Didn't end up needing to use chains on my trip to Mammoth but glad I have them and the order processing by etrailer was excellent.

Great product - just what I was looking for - I bought from another site online, bad chains, broke, and didn't work, even damaged my ABS lines when they snapped. They refused any customer service or help. Your chains, received quick and they went right on, no issues - thanks so much for your quick and timely shipping.

by:

These are great tire chains, love them for the plowing!

by:

All I can tell you is that they're heavy. I purchased them "just in case" and didn't need them last year. Hopefully, I won't ever need them. Heck; I don't even know if they actually fit, I never even tried them on.

by:

Five stars! Excellent customer service and shipping was early!

Purchased for 2016 Sprinter 4WD 140. Very pleased. Works well here in Pacific NW snow and ice. Heavy chain, but installs easy enough. Will need designated storage space. Great service and delivery.

Thanks again Quinn!!!

Pewag PWE2228SC chains are nothing fancy. Good old traditional design. Came in a canvas bag with no closure. Successfully mounted them on P165/70R17 tires. Have not tested them in real-life snowy conditions. After chains are on, should drive vehicle 1/4 to 1/2 tire revolution, then tighten chain hooks further. Adding additional tension cords almost a must. Picture shows chain loosening at 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions after driving only a few feet. Consider adding threaded chain link to tie down extra free links to prevent them from flopping around when driving. Flopping chains are know to cut brake and ABS lines and cause other damage to the vehicle, especially if chains are installed on front tires. Thule XG12 Pro may be a better choice for front tires, because nothing flops around on the medial side of chains.

by:

Chains worked as designed. We use them in our trips to our farms in Montana and Wyoming when roads are open of course. Truck and trailer do not slip or fish tail.

by:

So far, these chains look like they will deliver. I wanted something better than a cable chain that only lasts one storm. In my local, we typically get freezing rain with temperatures in the 30's. These should be good on ice. Installation was fairly easy and the cam tensioners pulled the chains tight. I also ordered the chain tensioning bungie.

by:

Didn't include a cam wrench, or a recommendation to order the wrench separately. What came is what I ordered but not what I needed to use the product. So: average.

  • What Makes a Tire Chain a Class S
Class S is the Society of Automotive Engineers' definition of the least amount of space that should be provided around the drive tires of any vehicle to accommodate the use of a winter traction device. A Class S tire chain meets this standard and is designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance and are typically smaller in design. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require the use of Class S chains. Not Class...
