Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars Installation - 2014 Infiniti Q50

Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer and today we have the Rhino-Rack roof rack system. We'll take a look at how it fits this 2014 Infiniti Q50. So if you wanna carry around some fun accessories, maybe you wanna carry around some bikes but you don't have a hitch or even larger items like kayaks we can do is put them on your roof. What you first need though is a roof rack system. This is gonna be the Rhino-Rack roof rack system. There are a bunch of different options for your Infinity Q50.

This is what you would go with if you want a slightly faster and easier install and also a more rugged look. This is gonna be your medium price point roof rack as well where you still get quality at not that much of an expense. So let's take a look at some of its pros and cons especially on our little sedan here. So this is going to have the 46 inch long crossbars the 2500 towers, and the custom fit kit for your sedan. Now these are three different parts but we can send them to you as a kit.

If you use our fit guide where you put your year make model here at etrailer we'll have that all included in one kit for you. And later in this video I'll show you how to install it. But first let's talk about the crossbars. For height, you have two measurements for roof clearance. One is gonna be how much space do you have underneath your crossbars, here it's about three inches and that's how much space you have for clamps.

Some accessories have U-bolts that go underneath. You want a lot of clearance, which this offers. The next is how high does this sit above your roof And this is just a little past four inches. So that's where your cargo sits. If you're carrying around skis with extra tall bindings you can make sure there's enough clearance.

If there isn't you get accessories that give you more height. Since we have a sedan, we're not worried about this hitting the roof of our garage or anything and we have plenty clearance underneath so it's gonna be a good fit for most accessories. On top of your crossbars, you have these T track channels. So you do have the vortex strips which you take out in order to access it. You also have to remove the end cap to get into those channels. If you're using T track mounted accessories you'll take these up, take these off and cut them around your accessory, which is the downside. I recommend picking up extras of these before or as you purchase your roof rack so that you're ready to go. This offers you 165 pounds of weight capacity. You do have aluminum bars with struts on the inside so you have really good capacity as well in the center of your crossbars. You're not worried about it blowing in the middle but be mindful that this weight capacity includes the weight of your carrier. So if you're carrying around a heavy kayak also remember the weight of the carrier and make sure that included with a roof rack does not exceed your roof weight capacity. Since you do have a naked roof on your roof meaning there's no rails or fixed points, you'll use hooks to go into your roof. You're limited to a specific crossbar spread. That measurement is from one bar to another, 27 and five eighths of an inch. This is pretty in the middle for most accessories. Good for roof boxes and kayaks and skis and snowboards. For installing your roof rack, it might look a little overwhelming at first but that's what this video is for. I'm gonna guide you through the process. I already installed the rear crossbar. So we are going to install the front crossbar together which is actually where you start because it's easier to go from the front and then install the rear. So we have the crossbars, we have the towers, we have the clamps. Let's put them together. First you're going to push in the wind strips into the T track channel on top of your crossbar. Then you're going to flip the crossbar over so that you have access to the bottom channel and that's where you're going to put your towers. So notice that the towers have this long or large square plate. You're gonna wanna loosen it just enough so it can slide through. Once it's pushed in you're then going to measure where to stop. You get this measurement strip included with your crossbars and you are gonna follow the measurement printed on your instructions. So for the front crossbar it says 187. So usually you just cut there at the 187. In our case here, since we're just doing a demonstration I'm not gonna cut it, but I'll show you how it pushes into your roof rack crossbar. Go to where the cut line is and that's where you line up the end of your tower. So you're gonna tighten down the tower with the included Allen key tool. And this actually has its own torque setting which you'll be using throughout this install. The way that torque setting works is that you push on the end of the lever and the lever bends straight if you have enough torque. If it bends past horizontal, you're over tightening the bolt. Installing the pads is next. And to do that, you first need to figure out which one's the right side and which is the left of the crossbar. An easy way to orient yourself is to have the brand logo facing the front of your vehicle, and then the right is gonna be passenger side. Left is driver's side, so this is gonna be your right side. Flip it over, find the pad for the right side. Look for the numbers printed underneath the pad. So this is 697, which is the right side and that's gonna fit onto our arrow here. So the arrow is gonna be facing out and just push the plate and the pad together. Arrows still facing out or away from the vehicle, you then push the plate onto the tower. Now where do you put your crossbars Well, for here we're gonna measure from between the doors to that seam, and then it has a measurement for your front crossbar of 10 and five eighths of an inch. So we're gonna go over there we're going to take that spot, which is right here and then your kit includes some stickers if you wanna put that on your door and that will save your spot. Now get your crossbar, make sure that the towers are secured and the rubber pads are underneath because you're then going to gently place this on your roof and try to line it up with the marking. The arrow on the tower should line up with the arrow of your measurement and you want to the pad to be as flush with the contours of your vehicle on both sides. Now you're going to attach the hooks. So open up the door, put the hook onto the tower and we're just going to set this into place because you wanna make sure it lines up with the curves of your vehicle. Hold it flush as you then get the bolt and you're gonna thread it into the nut in the back. So this can be a little tricky to get threaded the first time, but hand tighten it down before you go to the other one. Now, before you use your tool, you're going to want to tighten it down evenly on both sides. So go like 50% on this side another 50 on that side, 75 back and forth so you're not pulling the whole system one way to the other. This is helpful if you have a friend with you otherwise you're just walking back and forth. Remember that torque setting we talked about You'll also use that for the towers so you don't overtighten them. So for your front crossbar, it's not as sleek of a fit as for your rear crossbar. So not the best fit I've seen but it's also solid and secure on there. And if you do it right you can slam your door on the hooks, no problem. So make sure all four towers are tightened down and then you're gonna put the door on there and lock it to secure it. Final step is the end caps for your crossbars. So you have your Rhino-Rack security caps which use a special Rhino-Rack tool and that keeps your end cap on the crossbar. If you want to, you can purchase metal lock cores separately. I recommend adding the keys to your key chain or putting them in a safe spot in your vehicle. But other than that, once you just double check that everything is solid and secure you're ready to load up your roof rack and hit the road because you are done with the install. That there was a look at our Rhino-Rack roof rack with the 46 inch long vortex aero crossbars, the towers as well as the custom fit kit for your 2014 Infiniti Q50.

This was a great purchase. I originally ordered roof crossbars from somewhere else and immediately returned them. They were a universal fit and were not secure at all when they were tightened down. They were from a third seller on Amazon. I found these on etrailer and I am glad that I made the purchase. I did not want to spend the money at first that these cost, but am glad that I did. The install was easy and the crossbars are very secure and hold up well with the cargo basket installed. They were well worth the money. Can't wait to try them out when we go camping. Thank you etrailer.

Ease of order, receipt, installation and excellent customer service is what I received in this order.
Thank you, e-trailer!

Takes a little while to assemble the rack bars.
The stickers are great I can mark the positions after measuring the distance between the bars.
One of the screws is underneath the bar; it is hard to reach to tighten the bars.
Finally, I got the roof rack installed and it looks good.

Pretty nice rack system. Held up to my 90lb canoe no problem. However a piece did fly off on the highway and the "locking" bar end cap can pull off super easy.
The directions were ok. There is some stuff you have to kind of figure out for yourself, mainly the roof trim. I plan to leave the rack on so I drilled theough the trim

Just followed all the etrailer website prompts for my naked roof Toyota Matrix and it set me up with the three packages needed- rails legs and fitkit. Installed easily enough. I like the little arrow stickers hidden in the door jams for fast re-install later. Held two 10’ kayaks on a 2 hr journey with ease.

This is a perfect fit for our 2015 Prius V with "naked" roof. Instructions were clear and accurate, and the bars are solid and able to support our canoe and kayak easily. We added the air deflector, as there was a bit of wind noise, but now there is none. Great product at much lower price than the big names.

Absolutely love the Rhino Rack. Easy to install (watch the [online] video). Looks GREAT. Hauls my kayaks no problem. Very well made and I highly recommend this product.

The Rhino 2500 series is well built. The etrailer customer service person Trevor W. was great. He was so helpful in getting the right components for my Rhino 2500 roof rack to mount to my 2010 Silverado. Thanks for the help Trevor.

This was the kit for my 2020 equinox. The spacing of the feet on the vortex aero bars was incorrect I had to use the Euro sizes. Went back and forth with customer service trying to get confirmation that was the right size but it never was confirmed. Everything is installed now and sturdy.

by:

Seemed to work well with my 2012 Kia Soul. I have only had it on my car for a day at writing this so I can't really give it five stars. I would bump it up to five stars once its been on for a few months. Easy to install, and after doing a bit of research Etrailer.com Had the best deal, and support for installation.

by:

Once installed the product is very sturdy and looks great. But the directions are hard to follow because of the separate components and would have been really tough without the video which was great. I have one problem, how can I eliminate the annoying wind sound when driving when nothing on the rack. I saw a video where wrapping a line around the crossbar can help. It has helped a lot but not completely. Is there another secret for this?

by:

Installed this and 65" Vortex Areo crossbars on a 2015 RAM 5500 chassis cab/crew cab. It is listed to fit 1500 to 3500 RAM's and neither Rhino-Rack or etrailer would confirm it would fit the 5500. My research suggested there was not much, if any difference, between the 3500 and 5500 crew cab, so ordered it any way. Installation was relatively easy, fit seemed to be good and have made multiple 200-300 mile trips with a 75lb kayak. Good price, great customer service and fast delivery through etrailer.

The roof rack is great, just pretty pricy, by me standards.
My only problem with the whole experience was that the roof rack comes in there separate packages. In my order, one package was omitted, which created some confusion. I had to go back to the company and request that the 3rd package be sent.
Otherwise I'm happy with the purchase.
I responded to a previous request fro feedback, so I'm not sure why I'm being asked again, but . . .

Customer support was great. After reading the instructions and watching the video on how to install the Rhino Rack installation went well. The ski rack has one draw back, if you leave car out over night with skis locked in the ski rack, every thing can be easily stolen. All you need is an Allen wrench to remove the ski rack with the skis. The roof rack has locking covers the prevent theft of the roof rack. The ski rack can be easily removed from the roof rack.

Fairly easy installation. Read the instructions thoroughly before hand and get familiar with the parts. Take care when installing mounting studs onto car itself so as not to strip or cross thread them. Once installed they look great.

Ive had these racks for a year and they've been really good. They fit my 2019 nissan frontier easily. The only thing that keeps it from 5 stars is when it rains really heavy, I get a slow, occasional drip where the mount sit under the door's weather seal.

This review covers the Rhino Rack 2500 Vortex Aero crossbars and associated parts (DK284, RRRLKVA, RRVA137S-2) for a naked roof installation on a 2018 Honda CR-V.

Very solid racks. We just took our first trip using them and the didn't budge. As recommended, a few days after installing, I tightened the bolts a bit. I'm not sure they needed it--just a little insurance.

The installation process was clear, but fairly detailed. It would be easy to miss a step, so take your time. Also, I tried a couple shortcuts in the order when installing on the car, but had to back track. So, go in the order they give you.

The racks easily supported our filled "pod" and a couple surfboards, strapped side-by-side. Sorry, no photos of the rack loaded. One thing to watch out for is that our old Thule pod almost didn't fit because of the thickness of the racks. I had to loosen the bolts almost entirely.

Of note: I feel that although I followed the measurements to the millimeter, the fit on our 2018 Honda CR-V wasn't exact. Where the pads sit on the roof of the car didn't align perfectly. I could have adjusted this by just re-trimming the rubber pads that go in the channels, but it's not a big deal, so I just left it.

Finally, I do have one concern. The angle of final installation doesn't really protect the racks from theft very well. The plastic plate that locks over the screw would allow someone with the proper tool to get up under it and loosen the bolts. That being said, someone so inclined could also just break the little plastic door or drill a hole in it to access the bolt. So, I guess it's just a deterrent anyway.

Overall, I'm very happy with the racks and etrailer.com! Despite shipping delays due to Covid-19, they were able to get the racks to me in time for an upcoming trip. I did choose to expedite shipping, but the cost was very reasonable.

Easy assembly and installation. Pay careful attention to pad direction as shown in instruction sheet for the fit kit. One gripe: one end-cap refuses to lock (blue plastic key lock). Had to tape it on so I don’t lose it.

All items ordered were as described wind were easy to install . The shipping was less than stellar . Tforce sat on the items for 3 business days before finally calling . No tracking was provided for tforce till I called in to etrailer questioning why shipment went from ups to T FORCE . Driver from t force claimed he could not get into address location per length of his trailer . Had to meet driver at another address . Came back to original delivery address and fed ex freight was sitting in parking lot just fine ( had same size trailer as TFORCE ) . Tforce Driver was basically being lazy by not coming to original address . Hope etrailer changes shipping companies

I bought the roof rack to carry kayaks back and forth from Pennsylvania to Florida. The rack is solid and performs that task very well. My plan was to take the rack off and on but I decided to just leave it on. I do notice some wind noise since I've added the rack but it does not distract me and I would say that it is not excessive but it is noticeable.
I did have problems during the installation. I mounted the racks on a Ford 250 super duty. And the instructions were very clear as to where the feet that's support the rack where to be installed. Plastic strips are cut and the feet that support the rack on the roof push up to the cut plastic strips and that is what determines placement. I read the instructions several times and had seen an installation on another truck owned by a friend of mine. When I pushed the feet to the proper position I could not attached the clamps from the rack feet to the rain gutter on the truck which holds the whole assembly on the roof. They were too short. I spoke to Etrailer and a consensus was that I had cut the strips correctly. Etrailer's input of course was over the phone and they could not actually see or measure anything that I did. Nevertheless, in order to install the rack I had to move the feet on each side a bit closer to the rain gutter on the truck. I did not think that this would make any difference and based on the performance I have not noticed any problems. I would have given this product and excellent rating if I did not have to deal with the little problem that I had with the fit. As I said I have not taken it off the roof and I reach up and check it now and then and it's as solid as the day I put it on.

by:

These were exactly the right part for my car. They were easy to put on the crossbar kit. The crossbar kit also worked great. I can't imagine how a more expensive set would have worked better than the Rhino Rack we bought.

by:

The installation was easy and it does it’s job. My only gripes are the locks are a little tough & the wind noise can be a lot if you get a good head wind! Besides that I’ve enjoyed it

  • Fit Kit Needed To Transfer A Rhino-Rack Roof Rack From An Infiniti G37 To A Q50
I was able to look up your order and it looks like the Rhino-Rack Crossbars # RRVA118B-2 and feet # RRRLKVA are going to be a fit for your Infiniti Q50, but you'll need to get a new fit kit # DK378. There should be installation instructions to help guide you with placement included with the new fit kit but I've also attached a diagram below. Once installed you should have no issues installing your Rhino-Rack Ski and Snowboard Carrier # RR576.
