The hitch is currently being put on and the only issue I'm having is that the bumper part that is threaded is super tight. My brother and I kept the bolts loose in order to thread it but it still wouldn't start. I wondered if it had been plugged with a bolt before it was painted and that was why it was so tight. I've got it started and I don't believe it's cross threaded but it's still extremely tight. Gonna man handle it in and hopefully it doesn't snap. It's a permanent install so I'm not too worried about it. Maybe the piece is welded at a slight angle. Hard to say. Great product. My 97 Dutchman will be able to ride correctly now.

It sounds like the troubles that you are having may describe a slightly flexed hitch. This is something that does happen in transport to our facility, and can happen when we ship them out. Please take a look at the crossbar that this bolt goes in and see if you can get a level or a speed square on it and check if is in alignment. It may have flexed a bit and be out of square. I have included one of our help articles for your reference that do describe how to fix a flexed hitch. It may also be beneficial to make sure that there is not any debris, or build up on the bumper where it looks like you had a trailer ball previously installed. I would suggest a stiff bristled brush and some lubricant like WD-40 or an equivalent.

The hitch is very nice and would have been a snap to install on a new truck.
The old hitch was a universal item , I needed a torch, once all the old hitch was removed the etrailer went on pretty easy..
One thing the powder coating was pretty thick inside the threaded nipple that mounts off the bumper hole, it needed a tap to clean out all the cured powder coating.
It looks wonderful under the truck and gave it about another 31/2 inches of ground clearance.
I am very happy with the Curt Hitch from etrailer.com

Omg! Etrailer order/shipping all ok. However, product from Curt the worst experience ever with a hitch! All order info points to me having the correct part number but all 4 side bolts holes (even oblong) did not line up. And then it gets worst! The one large bolt that goes down through the factory hole in bumper was the incorrect bolt. Meaning it had the wrong threads to match the hitch! And it was a pan head bolt when the surface is flat! Wtf? Disaster! And I have installed many hitches in my lifetime!

I could not believe how well made and howwell the hitch fit my truck. this whole install took only twenty minutes to complete. The wire harness was so easy to hook up. The whole task was so much easier than any other hitch install I have ever attemped.

  • Troubleshooting Curt Hitch Not Fitting 2007 Dodge Dakota
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13230 is designed to fit a 2007 Dodge Dakota so everything should have lined up just fine. If the brackets didn't quite line up with the mounting points on your Dakota then they may have become flexed during shipment and you'll need to force them back to their original positions. This isn't uncommon and we actually have an FAQ about this that I'm linking to this answer page. If there is a different reason as to why the hitch didn't fit please let me know...

  • Recommended 2" Hitch for 2006 Dodge Dakota
To add a 2" hitch receiver to your 2006 Dodge Dakota I recommend using the Curt # 13230 because of the durability of Curt hitches when it comes to the powder coating; this ultimately helps protect the hitch from dings and scratches that might lead to corrosion that can otherwise reduce the life of the hitch. This hitch is a Class III hitch that is a custom fit for your Dakota, so no drilling will be required during installation. There are some other parts you may not have to get a complete...

  • How to Determine Towing Capacity for a Hitch on a 2005 Dodge Dakota 2WD Quad Cab
The Curt Trailer Hitch, item # 13229, is designed and tested for fit and capacity, likewise the Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider have their own towing capacity ratings for the vehicle and bumper. In your case the vehicle attachment point is rated for 2,000 pounds capacity so that will be the maximum rating for your vehicle with the bumper mounted option. You always have to go by the lowest rated item in the towing system for maximum capacity. If you need more capacity than the bumper...

  • Availability of Class IV Hitch for 2008 Dodge Dakota
Most Class III hitches will have a Weight Carrying Capacity and a Weight Distribution Capacity. There is not a Class IV hitch available for the 2008 Dakota, but the Curt Class III receiver, part # 13230 has an 8000 lb capacity when used with a weight distribution system. The W/D system will use leverage provided by spring bars to transfer a portion of the trailer tongue weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle, thus allowing the hitch to bear more weight. Although the hitch is rated...

  • Compatibility of Curt Class III Hitch # 13230 with 2010 Dodge Dakota with Full Sized Spare Tire
I spoke with my contact at Curt about the compatibility of that hitch with a Dodge Dakota full-sized spare tire. It turns out he has a 2011 Dakota. They used his truck to do some of the test fits and found that the Curt # 13230 fit just fine with the full-sized spare. He said that when raising or lowering the spare, you might need to push the tire toward the front of the vehicle just a little bit so it clears the hitch, but other than that, you will have no worries. You can see the installation...

  • How to Tell if My 2010 Dodge Dakota Has the Factory Tow Package
You can either take the VIN of your 2010 Dodge Dakota and reach out to your local Dodge dealer and they can confirm that for you or you can look at the trailer wiring on your Dakota. If it has a single square plug like what the Hopkins Wiring # HM42190 connects to then it has the tow package. If instead the wiring runs to the tail lights like the Curt Wiring # 55323 then you don't have the tow package. If you don't have anything on your pickup then you don't have the tow package and you...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2008 Dodge Dakota
We have 3 hitches that will fit your 2008 Dodge Dakota. All three hitches will require you to remove your factory trailer hitch. I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75251 which has the very similar design and the same capacity ratings of the Curt hitch at a better price point. The only real difference is the manufacturer in this case.

  • Trailer Hitch & Wiring For 2008 Dodge Dakota
How much your 2008 Dodge Dakota can tow also depends on its model, cab size, and wheelbase, so it's not possible for me to answer what your towing capacity without all the information. A call to your local Dodge dealer should clarify it though. To tow use Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13230 and Vehicle Wiring Harness # C55381.
