If the edge of the door on the trailer is going to be flush with the inside of the of the door jamb on the trailer, then this door latch would not allow enough room for a 1/2 inch piece of trim. The latches are actually not designed to fit the thickness of the door so you could use whichever size would allow the pin to catch in the door lip. f you were able to make it so the door did not have a gap, then you could use a door latch such as the Paneloc Slam Latch # F708-204P011, which is 2" long x 1-5/8" wide with a mounting hole diameter of 3/16" and a pin width of 7/16". I can certainly point you in the right direction. I am sorry to say that there is not a way to look up a trailer VIN to know what kind of latch you will need. The original manufacturer of the trailer may be able to provide that info. On a trailer almost 30 years old that may be a long shot though.

We have a few options for door latches that might be good replacements for yours. There is the Bauer Products Manger Door Lock for Horse Trailers # BA95FR. This is designed for a vertical oriented door latch.
We also have a horizontal opening style. That would be more like the "Junior" Locking Stainless Steel Flush Door Latch with Inside Release # L1833.

I might have an option for you but we don't offer any flush door latches with an extended striker. However, the Full Size Locking Steel Flush Door Latch part # L3980 matches your door cutout at 4-5/8" long x 3-3/8" so this is our best option. If the striker does not reach the catch plate, I recommend moving the latch closer to the end of the door.
