I am assuming you have electric brakes? If so there could be a number of reasons why the rear brake(s) on your trailer are getting hot. These reasons include but are not limited to lack of lubrication, spindle nut too tight, improper adjustment, failing brake magnets etc. However, since the issue only occurs every so often then it sounds like you have a wiring/magnet issue.

It sounds like either your Prodigy P3 # 90195 wiring needs to be looked at, or the wiring for the trailer brake circuit.
Start off by checking that the wiring for the P3 is operating as it should. The pigtail connected to the back of the controller will have the following wires connected to the following functions:
Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer
Black - 12V Power
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)
