You have two options that will work with the 2003 Toyota Matrix XR models. Both are Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers, but there are some visual and capacity differences between the two. The Draw-Tite option # 24812 will be more visible than the other and will have less capacity. The Curt option # C12013 which I recommend is less visible and has more weight capacity.
I recommend the Curt option because it's more hidden and has a maximum gross trailer weight of 2,500 lbs and a maximum... view full answer...
Like you mentioned, the highest tongue weight rating for a trailer hitch on your 2007 Toyota Matrix XR is the 250 lbs of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12221. I can't recommend going over that amount at all, even at lower speeds, as it is not rated for or tested for more than 250 lbs and exceeding that will not only put undue stress on the hitch, but also void the warranty.
So you will definitely want to stay at or below the 250 lb limit to ensure you can safely get to your destination... view full answer...
The Swagman XC2 Wheel Mount Bike Rack, item # S64650, does work with Class I hitches. You can rest assured because the 2009 Ford Focus that is pictured with this rack installed is one of my good friends vehicle and it works great on his car. We installed the Class I hitch on his vehicle which is the only size avalable for the Focus at this time.
I checked the manufacturer instructions (see link) and see no mention of the rack not fitting in a Class I hitch.

On the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, # 24812, it will fit on your 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS with the lower rear fascia. The rear fascia has a center section that will have to be removed when you install the hitch. It is not hard to remove that section because it is made to be removed for a trailer hitch installation.

The crossbars used by the discontinued Rola 59721 have about 42 inches of usable length, which will be enough to accommodate the Thule # TH819 Portage canoe carrier and the 37 inch width of your canoe.
The Thule Portage is compatible with the 3-1/8 inch crossbar width of your Rola roof rack, and will work as long as the crossbar spread (center to center distance apart) is between 24-36 inches and the weight of the canoe is less than the 100 lb capacity of the Rola roof rack. view full answer...

The Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C12221, and the Swagman XC, part # S64650, will work well on your 2009 Toyota Matrix.
The only other thing that you will want to keep in mind is that per the Curt warranty you will need to use a Support Strap # 18050 for any non-trailer loads like a bike rack or cargo carrier, otherwise the warranty is void.
If you would like to add some security to your setup, I recommend using the Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock and Cable # S64031 which will help to... view full answer...
The 4-Pole mounting bracket # 18144 is designed for Tow Ready brand 4-Way trailer connectors but could also fit other brands such as Curt wiring harnesses. Some 4-Ways have an extra thick housing that is not compatible. This seems to be the case with Hopkins brand 4-Ways so I would not use this bracket for a Hopkins 4-Way. You could instead try the # tr20046. view full answer...
Yes, the 4 to 7-Way adapter, # 37185, will have both a function 7-Way and 4-Way once it is properly installed.
To make it fully functional you will plug your existing 4-Way into the way at the back of the adapter. Then you will need to ground the white wire to the vehicle frame. The remaining wires have the following functions:
Blue for electric trailer brakes (requires a brake controller to control electric brakes)
Black is for 12 volt power (if the trailer requires 12 volt power, requires... view full answer...
There are a couple of things to look at before ordering tires and wheels for your vintage boat trailer. You mentioned the pilot hole (center hole) is 2.54 inches diameter. This could be important depending on how the wheel mounts to the hub. If it mounts using lug nuts then a larger pilot hole diameter is fine. But if uses wheel bolts instead of lug nuts then the pilot hole has to be exact because that is how the wheel centers on the hub.
