An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Installation - 2021 Winnebago View Motorhome

Hey guys, this is Jake here with etrailer. Today we've got a 2021 Winnebago View and we're gonna be installing some Timbrens on it to help with the rear suspension. A big question we get here at etrailer is how can I control the body roll or limit it in my RV Well, Timbren is just one of the many suspension enhancements that you can put on your RV because what'll happen is because an RV is so tall, you're gonna have a lot of wind that's causing body roll, bumps in the road, sharp turns. That's all gonna cause the vehicle to rock side to side and that can be a really uneasy feeling. Adding these Timbrens, they're going to replace your jounce bumpers on your motorhome and they're going to engage much faster than the jounce bumpers would have to. The springs we're installing today are gonna be a progressive spring and what that means is the more and more they compress the harder they're gonna work to eliminate that body roll.

So they're gonna get stiffer as they compress. Another thing that Timbrens are gonna help with is that our customer here likes to tow a boat behind his vehicle. So this is gonna help him a lot with that extra weight on the back because he's still experienced a lot of body roll especially with the trailer loaded on the back. Here's a good reference for the size comparison between the factory jounce bumpers and our new Timbren so you can see how much they're gonna be able to help. Now let's go ahead and take our motorhome outside and we'll show you the before and after we installed the Timbrens.

So here we're hitting some bumps in the road and you can probably hear all the stuff moving from the back of the camper. Our blinds are all over the place. This is especially gonna be scary when you're driving an RV with some higher winds. What it does is the top of the RV is super tall so it's gonna catch a lot more wind than a normal vehicle wood. And with this specific vehicle it's a Mercedes sprinter van again so it's got a lot of of body roll because it's a super soft suspension for comfort.

But where that hurts you is going to be when you get those winds or you're hitting bumps and then the whole motorhome itself starts to rock side to side. But we're just in our parking lot here at etrailer and we've got little bitty bumps and cracks in the road and I can feel every single one of 'em the suspension in the back almost feels like real watery. If you've experienced this you probably know what I'm talking about but it's very, very soft. So hopefully with our new suspension upgrade the Timbrens are gonna help to solidify that back end a little bit. We'll come into a turn.

Oh yeah, you can feel the whole motorhome kinda leaned to the right as we're making a left turn. Now with all this in mind you have to remember we're only on flat ground here. We're not even talking about when you're at a campsite and there's, you know, the road might be off kilter a little bit and that's scary when you are driving on those roads and the whole motorhome feels like it's wanting to tip over especially if you're a new driver. If you're an experienced driver, you probably know that the motorhome's gonna have a little sway side to side because of how tall it is. But hopefully with this new kit we can lock in the suspension a little bit better so that our neighbor here will have a much more confident drive and they don't feel like they have to white and knuckle the wheel if they get a little wind or hit a bump. Now with our Timbrens installed we're gonna go back over our test course and see how much movement we're able to get rid of. Oh yeah, first speed bump we hit it is a lot more solid back there. It still has a little bit of movement but that was to be expected 'cause the Timbrens are made out of a rubber compound. But yeah, this is a lot better. You can tell there's so much more control in the rear end when you go over a bump. We'll see when we try to make a turn here but at least on the bumps it brings it back to that resting height a lot faster. Whereas before it just kind of kept bouncing. The body roll I would say is maybe 25% of what it used to be. It's pretty impressive. On our straightaway here, again, you can tell the body role starts to happen with the little cracks and stuff in our parking lot, but it is quickly eliminated by, well there was a little bit bigger one, but it's quickly eliminated by the Timbrens controlling it. We'll do a turn around here, see if it rolls. Again, a little bit of body roll but not quite the lean that we felt before. The RV is staying pretty well centered up and down. It's got a little bit more natural bump here. Yeah, you can still feel some body roll, but that's good. That means our factory suspension is still flexing. You just don't feel the uncontrolled swaying from side to side or the body roll from side to side. Yeah, this system made a very, very large improvement to this suspension. And you can see the difference between the factory jounce bumpers and the new Timbrens we installed is that the factory jounce bumpers are not engaged anywhere close until you really really load the camper down. Whereas our new Timbrens are engaged all the time. They're engaged when you're parked, they're engaged when you're driving. It's only gonna be until you get a lot of flex that that one side will maybe lift off the axle. Now that we've seen the before and after effects let's go ahead and pull 'em in the shop and walk you through the installation. To start our installation what we need to do is we need to relax the suspension on the rear axle of our motorhome. And the way that we did it is we have hydraulic jacks on our motorhome here. So what we did was we lifted up just the rear end of the motorhome just enough to give us space to work under there. Our tires are still on the ground and we put jack stands underneath the frame so that it'll support it in case of a failure with the landing gear itself. So with that being said, let's go ahead and crawl underneath and we'll show you how to get the old one out and the new one in. To get our factory jounce bumper removed it's pretty simple. I just used a large flathead screwdriver and I just pried it up in this gap here and you may have to use a second hand to be able to keep your place when you're prying it out. It also might help to have a second screwdriver on hand to slide up in there to hold your place so you can reposition the larger one. Just like that. When installing the Timbrens I thought about using some either some white lithium grease or some type of lubricant to help me get it in place, but I think the way that I did it, it would only make the rubber more slippery and my tool would slide off of it. So the way it's gonna install is exactly how the factory one came out. I just started by sliding the forward most part of the angle in. And then what we need to do is take our screwdriver and bend this lip here on the end up and into place. You just want to try to work these tabs up into place. So by pushing on the end of this tab it helped us to get it past that point. Shouldn't be able to, got it coming out. We'll just take our screwdriver and make sure it's seated properly. Here we go. And that's it. Now we'll go ahead and repeat that same process on the other side. Well guys, hopefully this information was helpful. If you've got a 2021 Sprinter Van style RV I think these are gonna be a great fit for your motorhome. It helped to control the body roll. There's still gonna be some but if you didn't have any body roll that means your suspension's not gonna be moving at all. So we definitely don't want that and I think this kit is gonna be a great solution.

11,000-lb Capacity. These hollow rubber springs sit above the rear axle to help stabilize and level your vehicle. They also provide a more comfortable ride by absorbing road shock and improving roll stability. Easy to install and use.

The YouTube videos to install these items say it is easy. That was not my experience. I had a very difficult time getting the Timbren bumpers into the slots on the vehicle where the factory bumpers were removed. I followed the YouTube procedure of raising the vehicle, inserting one end of the bumpers and as much of the other end as possible, placing a wooden block between the bumper and the bottom support then lowering the vehicle.
I had to repeat this procedure numerous times to get the bumper inserted. Maybe the problem was the temperature which was only about 55 f.The second one was more difficult and I finally had to pry open the holder slot somewhat to get the bumper info the slot. I believe this is one to have a shop install it.

A great improvement in the suspension for stability and ride. They are one item added to improve the suspension along with Timbren bump stops in the front, Bilstein B6 struts and rear shocks plus a heavy duty Helwig anti-sway bar. My motor home now rides and drives with great improvement and is so much more stabile.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500

Good product , a real bear to install. I used a small hydraulic jack to push and pry the block into position . A screw driver alone was not the answer.

by:

I just installed this on my sprinter/airstream interstate. In the first few minutes of the test drive I noticed the difference. The ride is much more stable. No bounce on the backside of the speed bumps in my neighborhood and less roll in the turns. This is based on the rig unloaded. I imagine it will be more noticeable when loaded in the back storage carrier. I purchased the higher capacity - 11,000 lbs i believe... I watched the etrailer video and one from Timbren on YouTube. With all the additional RV components under the rig, taking off the tires was necessary. It also allowed me to install without getting underneath (sketchy without a lift). After lifting and removing tires, the toughest part is getting the second side of the part in the mount. I used dish soap and worked it in slowly moving from one end to the other. It took about 15 minutes of this repetition to get it to pop in.

Tricky to install however worth the effort...They work great!

by:

Product worked as stated. Thanks

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Definitely a must have when towing..stiff without a load but night and day difference while towing my travel trailer, better traction, steering and braking. Easy quick install..only issue I had was with the long bolts they sent with the spacer kit (optional for lift) the bolt diameter was too wide to fit through the holes on the bracket..but a trip to the local hardware store took care of that.

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

First off the product was beat up with paint/power coating missing in several places on both. I was putting on a brand new truck with less than 800 miles on it so I elected to touch up before install. I’ve hear a lot about Timbren but never had them. I had airbags on my F350 but when I switched to a new Tundra I went with Timbrens. I’m a bit disappointed in the ride. Feels like I can feel a “bump” in the truck from the rubber pick hitting the axle when I go on a bumpy road. Thinking I should have went with airbags. As far as having a load on the truck and helping with the squat, they do as they are advertised.

by:

I bought these to prevent the "squat" of carrying a load in a Ram 1500.It took only 30 minutes to install. Now when carrying a load or towing a travel trailer the truck is a better position.
The only thing you will notice is the smoothness of the ride. It's not, it is stiff. I'd rather have the stiff than the nose pointing to the moon.

by:

These work great for giving you a solid towing experience when loaded heavy; however, when driving empty you definitely get the jounce bumper “into the air” experience when driving on moderate to rough roads. I have the recommended gap installed between the axle and the timbrens, but with terrible midwest roads and highways it doesn’t seem to be enough gap. Smooth roads it rides great. It’s driving 80mph on the expressway and hitting potholes or large cracks where these will hit causing uncomfortable harsh ride.

I’ve resorted to installing and then subsequently removing these anytime I use my travel trailer for longer trips (30minute removal time). I tow a 7000lb loaded travel trailer with an f150 and just needed something to make the soft half ton suspension from porpoising too much on bad-roads. Mission accomplished when towing as I said these things work great for heavy loads. It almost rides better with heavy loads…. I was going to give airbags a try but the reviews from others have scared me from those because even with airbags at the lowest setting you still get the jouncing on bumpy roads.

by:

They do exactly what I wanted them to do. They support my boat trailer and when not towing, they don’t touch the bumpers everything’s great.

by:

Easy install took about 20 minutes on my 2017 Ram 3500 SRW. Had about 1/2 inch clearance as recommended. Loaded up my 5th wheel (2350 hitch weight) and about 200 lbs of gear in the bed. Just got back from a 800 mile camping trip through mountains of TN. You can really feel the difference around those sharp corners and uneven surfaces. The truck felt firm and controlled not hard and jarring as some have mentioned. Going over those overpasses with the wonderfully smooth (Not) joists was greatly improved. The truck would squat and rebound again, with a firm controlled response. Driving without a load felt the same as before without them. I would highly recommend these! Ordering from etrailer continues to be my go to option!
