Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Subaru Legacy - Curt

Today on our 2013 Subaru Legacy sedan, we're going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12298. Now, here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outer most edge of the bumper is approximately two inches. From the top of the opening and the receiver to the ground is approximately 11 inches. Now, let's go ahead and install our hitch. We're going to first begin by installing a safety strap to support the exhaust. Next, we're going to need to remove three rubber isolators in order to lower the exhaust down.

In order to remove our rubber isolators, we're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant and a pry bar. Next, we'll go ahead and use our safety strap to help us lower the exhaust down out of the way. Next, we're going to need to remove the heat shield from the driver side. There's four bolts or screws that hold it in place, go ahead and remove them. We can then remove the heat shield. Next, we're going to need to mark the area on our heat shield that we'll need to trim out.

We'll use our paint marker to do that. We're removing this section here using a pair of tin snips or other means to cut it. Next, we're going to need to remove two rubber grommets from each side. Start over here on the passenger side, I have one here at the back. Let's take a flat head screw driver and push it out.

We have one a little farther forward, do the same thing and we'll go over to the driver side and repeat the same process. Next, we're going to need to open up this Ford most 03:30 hole, large enough with the square hole spacer block can fit in it, as well as this half inch carriage bolt. Now, to open up the hole, you can use a round file on a drill, you can use a hand file or even a die grinder cutting wheel to open up the hole large enough to allow these two items to fit in. Now that we have our hole opened up, we'll go ahead and make sure that the square hole spacer block fits in, as well as the half inch carriage bolt. Now, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver side. Next, we're going to go ahead and take some paint and spray the area that we just opened up on both sides, that way, it protects the barrel metal and keeps it from corroding. Let's go ahead and go over the hardware that we'll be using to secure our hitch to the vehicle. We'll be using a half inch carriage bolt, square hole spacer block, carriage bolt ...

We'll go on there like that and we'll be using a flange nut. Now, to install our hardware in the vehicle's frame, we'll be using a fish wire or a pole wire. Go ahead and take the coiled in, feed it through the mounting location and come out the access hole we just enlarged. We'll then, slide the square hole space block into position. We'll then, thread on our half inch carriage bolt. With our hardware up on the vehicle's frame, we'll go ahead and pull it down through the mounting location and then, go ahead and remove the pole wire or the fish wire. Then go ahead, then repeat the same process over for the rear mounting location on the driver side. Next, we'll go ahead and raise our hitch up into position with the help of an extra person. With our hitch in position over the rear carriage bolt, go ahead and put the nut in place. Go ahead and hand tighten them down first. Once we're sure the hitch is centered to where we want it, we'll go ahead and tighten down the two back nuts. Next, we're going to drill out the Ford 06:41 mounting location on each side. Go ahead and use the drill bit size, specified in the instruction. Then, we can go ahead and take our fish wire, go through the hole in the hitch, through the hole we just drilled and come out our access hole. We'll then, slide our square hole spacer block into place. Put a half inch carriage bolt on the end of the fish wire. Push the bolt up into the frame and pull them down into position. We can then remove the fish wire and add our half inch flange nut. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver side. Next, we're going to go ahead and re-install our heat shield with the three remaining fasteners. We trimmed one of the locations off and we had to trim the heat shield. Now, we'll go ahead and tighten and torque all the hardware to the manufacturer specification. Next, we'll go ahead and put the three rubber exhaust hangers back up in position. Now, as our rubber exhaust hangers back in position, we can go ahead and remove the safety strap. That will do it for the installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12298 on our 2013 Subaru Legacy Sedan. .
