Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Sonic - Curt

Today on our 2014 Chevrolet Sonic we're going to review and install the CURT class one 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C11258. Here's what our hitch is going to look like once it's installed. As you can see, it's got a nice square tube design with a fully welded construction. It's got a black powder coated finish so it blends in nicely with the underbody. On each side of our receiver tube are our chain hold downs. Pre-drilled going all the way through our receiver tube will be our 1/2" pinhole.

This is a class one 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube so it's capable of up to 200 pounds of tongue weight with a 2,000 pound tow capacity. Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/2". From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is 11". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. Now for this install we're going to have a total of four attachment points, two on each side. Here on the passenger side, starting at the end of the frame, we're going to use the first and fourth pre-drilled holes in the frame by the manufacturer, so our rear attachment point and our forward attachment point for the hitch.

The larger round hole will be used as an access hole to get our hardware into the frame. Each attachment point will get a 7/16 carriage bolt and block. The carriage bolt and block will come down through the frame to create our attachment point for the hitch, and it will get secured with a 7/16 flange nut. Now to get our hardware in the frame we'll use a 7/16 bolt leader that's provided with the install kit. We'll take the bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point, and out the access hole. Then we'll slide on the block and thread on the carriage bolt.

We'll feed the block and bolt into the frame separately, then pull them into position and down through the attachment point. Now we can leave the bolt leader attached as it will assist with getting our hitch up into place without pushing the hardware back into the frame. Now we'll repeat the same basic process for our forward attachment point. We'll go in the attachment point and out the access hole, slide on the block, thread on the carriage bolt. Go ahead and feed the block into the frame. Now, here on the driver side the hardware going to use the secure the hitch is going to be identical to the passenger side.

The difference will be the attachment points. The large access hole will also be our rear attachment point. Moving forward from that, the third pre-drilled hole that's even with the shock and just behind the spring is going to be our forward attachment point. Now to get our hardware in the frame for these two we'll start with the forward attachment point, taking our bolt leader, going into the frame and out the access hole. Just like on the fastener side, we'll slide on our block, thread on the carriage bolt, and feed them in the frame. But our rear attachment point, since our access hole also becomes the attachment point, what we're going to do is take our bolt leader, slide on the block, thread on the carriage bolt, and use the reverse pull method, feeding the carriage bolt into the frame first, followed by the block. Then we'll pull our hardware back down over the access hole to create our attachment point. We're now ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. Now as we bring the hitch up towards the frame we'll take the pull wire and feed it through the attachment point of the hitch. We'll bring our hitch up to the frame using our pull wire to keep our hardware from going back up into the frame. Then once the hitch is in place we'll remove the pull wire and install the flange nut. As we install our flange nuts we'll just install each one finger tight until they're all in place. Now keep in mind, here on the driver side it's really the same as the passenger side. Just our attachment points are a little different. Our hardware is the same so we'll tightening it down, which we're now ready to do. Now with our hardware tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch installed, tightened down, and torqued to specifications, we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of the CURT class one 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C11258, on our 2014 Chevrolet Sonic. .
