Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Hyundai Sonata - Curt

Today on this 2012 Hyundai Sonata, we're going to show you the Curt Class 1, 1 1/4" Receiver Kit, part #C11025. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the Sonata. Now you can see here, you can actually see the body of the hitch below the bumper, but that's because that's how the vehicle's constructed. There will not be a way of hiding the hitch, but it has a nice round tube shape to it. We take a look at the receiver itself, on each side there are bounds for your safety chains for your trailer. 1/2" hitch pin hole, and it does come with the hitch pin and clip or you can use your favorite hitch pin lock.

This is designed for 200 pounds tongue weight pulling down on the hitch. This hitch is also rated for 2,000 pounds total trailer weight. Now always double check with your owner's manual to the manufacturer of the vehicle to make sure that your vehicle can haul these kinds of weights. Next we'll go ahead and give you some measurements that'll help you out selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From top of top of receiver opening down to the ground will be about 10 1/2" and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about 4". First thing we need to do to install our hitch is lower exhaust and get it down out of our way. First we'll go ahead and remove the rubber hanger from the exhaust.

It's a good idea to spray it down with some lubricant first, then pry it off. After you remove the hanger, we'll use a 12 millimeter socket and an extension. Now it'll be a good idea to go ahead and use some kind of strap to help support the exhaust when we lower it, and we'll use another 12 millimeter socket on this bolt here to remove it from the hanger. Now we'll go ahead and lower our exhaust. There we go, and then we can go ahead and take off our heat shield.

Now it'll be 4 nuts that we have to remove using a 10 millimeter socket. We'll go ahead and put our hanger back up into place. Next we'll go ahead and switch over to the driver side for a moment, and you'll notice that are some coverings on the existing holes in the frame. We need to scrape those off, so we can get access to the holes. Done with our drivers side, we'll do the same thing on our passenger side. At this point, we can go ahead and work on installing hardware into the frame of our vehicle.

Now the hardware will eventually go to this hole here and also this one up here up front, but our hardware is not going to fit through this hole, so we're going to have to enlarge it. Then after we're done enlarging it, we'll use this hole to out our hardware in the other hole as well. We'll go ahead and start with a small pilot hole, and then we'll go ahead and go back at it with a 1/2" drill bit. Let's go ahead and work out the rest of remaining material with a screw driver, something to pry it up and out of the way. Now we can go ahead and install our hardware. We'll take the bolt leader, which comes with the kit, we'll route it through our hole closest to our bumper, and then out the hole we just enlarged. Go ahead and slip the block into place, and push it up into the frame. Then we'll thread on our bolt. Make sure you don't lose the bolt leader on the other side of the hole. We'll go ahead and push it into place into the frame. Then we'll pull out our block. Now we need to install hardware into this hole right here. Basically we'll do almost the same thing, except we'll assemble everything on the outside first. Put 2 together, thread the bolt in, then push it up into your frame. We're going to repeat all these same steps, including enlarging the hole, over on the passenger side. Now at this point, we can go ahead, and put our hitch up in position. It's definitely a good idea to get an extra set of hands for this part. We'll go ahead and lift it up and install the rest of our hardware. Now when we install the hardware, it's going to be the flange nut that comes with the hitch. Now you can see as we put up our passenger side, it fits nicely around the hanger. Now tighten down our hardware, we'll use a 3/4" socket. Then we'll go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Driver side's done, so the same thing on the passenger side. Definitely helps to have a ratchet on this side with a flex head. There we go. Just go ahead and put our heat shield back into place. Now this forward fastener here, and the 2 on the side will be reused. The one closest to the hitch will not be reused. Let's go ahead and reinstall our muffler hanger. We'll go ahead and take off our supporting strap and reinstall our bolts here. With that that'll finish with the Curt Class 1, 1 1/4" Receiver Hitch, part #C11025 on this 2012 Hyundai Sonata. .

Installed on a 2013 Kia Optima LX. Well made hitch and bolted up nicely. Installing required slotting two of the vehicle frame holes to allow passage of the mounting bolts and reinforcing plates. Used a die grinder to elongate the existing holes. Existing heat shield on the passenger (left) side required trimming. Allow approximately 1 1/2 hours for install. I've seen one review claiming 30 minutes but take my advice and allow more. Looks good installed and very solid. Many thanks to etrailer for great product, price and service!!

I received the hitch very quickly and in good shape. Your install time is very optimistic for a driveway install but every thing went well. Since I had no help I had to get creative with my Optima. With the trunk open I hooked a strap to the hook where the trunk lid latches to and the other end of the strap to one of the safety chain eyes. I pulled the strap up until the receiver was about half way up to where it will be when finished. I then slid the hitch in over the top of the mufflers and let it temporarily sit there while I got under the hitch . I was now able to lift the back of the hitch up into position on both sides without holding the weight of the hitch. You may want to shorten the strap at this time to pull the receiver up almost to where it will be when the bolts are fastened. It was a whole bunch easier than trying to prop up one end and fighting with the weight of the hitch. Every thing else was good and the hitch looks great
