Built-In Controls on the Syncronizer

Syncronizer Controls

Power Output Control

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the left of the module to change your settings.

Red Indicator Light

The red LED indicator light illuminates when the trailer brakes are applied. This light glows brighter as the power output to the trailer brakes increases.

Slide-Bar Manual Override

The Hayes Syncronizer keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override.

The included custom-fit adapter plugs into the port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which you'll find underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Once you're plugged into your factory port, just plug the other end of the adapter into the Synchronizer. No hardwiring needed!

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Hayes Syncronizer comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Syncronizer. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Video Transcript for Hayes Syncronizer Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2022 Ram 1500

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2022 Ram 1500, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Hayes Synchronizer trailer brake controller in conjunction with the CURT adapter plug. But before we get into that, why don't we just take a couple minutes, check this out and make sure it's gonna be right for you. So you plan on pulling a trailer around with some brakes and you're gonna need a way to apply those trailer brakes. That way you'll slow down as a whole unit and not just have to rely on your truck's brakes. And that's where a brake controller is gonna come into play like this one here.

So this is gonna work with trailers that have electric brakes and for trailers that have up to two axles. So that'll cover the majority of people I feel like that will be towing trailers with this type of truck. So pretty good shape. With this trailer brake controller, one of the things I really like about it is a simplicity. There's really not a whole lot to it and which makes it easy to use and easy to figure out.

So with this one you're really only gonna have one adjustment, which is the gain, which is a knob that you can roll back and forth. And that essentially just means the power output to the brakes. So you can adjust the intensity of how hard the brakes are gonna apply. And then you'll just have your manual override lever, which when you push this, what that does is apply just the brakes on your trailer. So in the vent of a sway situation, something like that, you can hit this slowly, get the trailer squared back up and ride and true behind you.

So this is a time delayed brake controller, which means it's going to send out the same amount of power over a given amount of time. So if I push your brake pedal down, that light, hopefully you can see it getting brighter and brighter. So that's gonna be the same every time. Not as a smooth ride compared to let's say, proportional type brake controller, which applies the trailer brakes in proportion to how hard you hit the brakes inside. So if the proportionals, let's say, you're halfway on the brake that brake controller, proportional type brake controller is gonna send that same amount of power back to the trailer, in a sense.

So, but with that said, nothing wrong with the time delay. These are tried and true. They've been around for a long time. A lot of people are familiar with them and they're gonna get the job done. Something I do wanna bring up, if you're not too crazy about the thought of having a brake controller mounted to your dashboard, there is a solution. CURT has this under dash one and so this is gonna plug in and mount under the dash where you can't see it. But with this one you'll use a mobile device to make any adjustments or things like that. So that's an option for you if you're not too thrilled about having something on the dash. But other than that, at the end of the day, like I said, it's tried and true, very simple, and we'll apply the trailer brakes. And as far as the installation goes, really not bad at all. You drop this panel down. It's two screws, pops out, plug the adapter into the factory connector plug and then mount this up. So really shouldn't give you a whole lot of issues or take up a bunch of your time. But if you'd like to stick around, we'll go ahead and get started on putting this one on together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here in the front seat of our Ram and what we're gonna need to do is locate the factory connector plug, which is located behind this panel here in our dash. So we'll have to remove this starting by taking out two screws along the bottom. We're gonna take a seven millimeter to get them removed. (drill buzzing) Put the two screws out, this should just pop out. So if you grab the edges of it, we can let this come down. And we should have room now without having to disconnect anything to find our connector plug. So if we look up and behind the panel there we're gonna have a handful of connectors that are just taped up to some wiring. The trailer brake controller connector should be located within this bundle. So what I'm gonna do is remove the tape and hopefully we can drop it down and have a better look at it. So I just pulled the connector out of that tape and this is the one we're looking for. It has four pins in it, so that's gonna be our trailer brake controller plug. And now what we can do is take our adapter here that we're using. Simply just plug that right on in. So I went ahead and just dropped our connector, below our panel here and we can reinstall the panel. But this is a good opportunity to see what we got going on the back. So we're gonna mount our controller somewhere on the right side of the panel. And really the only thing we have going on here is this piece. So about halfway down is where we wanna mount it. So just to give you a visual of what's going on the backside. 'Cause when you mount a controller up, you don't wanna drill into anything important. So we're in pretty good shape here and we'll just reinstall this the opposite way that we removed it. At this point you can mount up your bracket and we're gonna go right here in this location. Now when you do this, make sure to try to get it as level as you can and we're just going to take the included screws (drill buzzing) and run them into the dash to get it secured. (drill buzzing) Before you actually mount up the brake controller to the bracket, what I like to do is pre-tap the attachment points here because these aren't threaded right out of the box. And being that, you're holding this up on a bracket on the dash. It's not super easy to get these started. So I like to just take the screws by hand and run them in and cut those threads, that way it's a lot easier to get everything hooked up. So go ahead and hold this in position. I got all four of these screws started hand tight. We'll put it where we want it and snug them down. (tool rasping) What we can do now is simply just plug the brake controller into the adapter plug. Then I can come back with some zip ties and bundle up our wiring to where it's outta sight and secured. When you do that, make sure you don't wrap it around the steering column or moving parts. And then I took some wire loom and put it on there just to make it look a little bit better. And this is something you will have to get separately though. But from there I plug it into a test box, which is simulating a trailer. If you don't have a test box you can use your trailer to test this. But keep in mind if you have an issue on the trailer side, it could mislead you into to thinking it's something on this end. So couple ways we can check it and one I'll hit the manual override and we can see the light illuminating and we're getting power back to our brake. And if I push our brake pedal down we can see our light getting brighter and brighter so we know we have power getting sent back there. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the Hayes Synchronizer trailer brake controller on our 2022 Ram 1500.

I like the simplicity of the controller that does it's job. Manual settings that I can control instead of the automatic ones that operate finicky and not to my liking. 2018 F-150 with out the factory wiring was a little inconvenient, but with the helpline advising me on the adapter harness and advise on what amperage relay to use on a tandem axle setup everything was a complete success. Another great purchase from trailer, also great advice again that made another project a satisfying success. When I make a recommendation for etrailer, most people already know. Those that use etrailer for the first time, realize this is the go to place for trailer, trucks and campers which I have a few of each. Thanks y'all.

Super fast delivery and easy plug and play installation. Would highly recommend

by:

Nice product and very easily installati on.

by:

No threaded inserts in unit and screws for attachmen, guess you get what you pay for

by:

Super easy to install and the additional information they provided for my specific vehicle made it possible for me to have every piece necessary for a seamless installation.

by:

Great price, no delay as it came the same day as promised. Feel very comfortable dealing with etrailer !

by:

Splicing the wires was no problem. Instructions were good. The only recommendation that I will give is that you trash all screws with flat screw driver heads. I also opted for bolts, nuts & washers for attaching the bracket.

by:

I think it will be a good brake controller, I have not had a time delayed on before.

by:

Original supplied item was defective, however Hayes customer service immediately sent another unit and it works great. With the addition of a small removable slip in bracket for the console of my 2012 GMC 1500 Crew Cab and the wiring adapter, I can simply plug and play when I need the controller as opposed to a permanent installation that I have in my other pickup.

by:

works great

by:

Works well. I like the delayed brake activation, it seems to be a smoother transition. The custom harness makes installing this controller easy and FAST. Love buying Made in the USA products and etrailer.com has a lot of them.

by:

Installation was simple and straightforward. Took less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

by:

Looks good!

by:

easy to install. Brakes tested good to trailer. I used self taping screws to mount brackets, rather than the bolts and nuts that it came with.It was to difficult to get my hands in position to use bolts and nuts (no big deal).

by:

This is the 2nd one of these I’ve bought. I like the time delay application to the brakes. Always will try to buy products made in the USA. The price went up since I bought this same controller 1 1/2 years ago.

by:

Installed in 10mins in 2018 ram 1500 ecodiesel, have not used with trailer yet. Seems good for price, mounting bracket could be made a little better. Good service from e trailer
