These Titan Chain diamond-pattern chains are great winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these chains are perfect because they're durable and easy to mount. And they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Slide chains behind the tire

2. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.

Make connections behind the tire

3. Connect the ends of the cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Attach green hook to yellow side chains

4. Around front, connect the 2 ends of the yellow side chain using the green hook at the top of the tire.

Feed tensioner through clips

5. At the bottom of the tire, feed the silver tensioning chain through the red channel bracket and pull it taut. Then run the tensioner through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire.

Recheck tension

6. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire. Pull your vehicle forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the tension.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

First, overall I will say I like these chains. I have used cables before as well as cheaper chains and found them more difficult to put on (in the case of the chains) and did not provide as great of traction.

When these chains are on they work great. They're pretty easy to put on and the traction in deep snow and on ice is great.

Unfortunately, one of my chains completely broke apart when I was driving the mountain rode in a bit of ice and slush. I was going about 25 and I had properly secured and tightened them before heading out. I doubled back to pick them up off the road and the metal was completely broken, so there was no salvaging that. I had used them only 4-5 times and dry them off after each use, so I'm pretty disappointed it did not last long at all. I reordered a pair in hopes the last one was a fluke and now have a backup chain in case one breaks again, but will update this after a few more trips with the new chains. Overall, they work great when they work, but the build quality is now in question.

Intuitive design and easy install. Carrying case with two separate pockets is a nice feature to keep the chains apart from one another. Just waiting on snow to put them to the test.

Im am very very satisfied with purchasing these chains from etrailer. First their web page was easy to navigate. Second the price was great. Then they were delivered as promised and quick. Once they arrived the quality is great and they came in a very nice carry case. Then I actually put them on in less then 5 minutes each and they went on without moving the truck like it says. so easy I couldn't believe it. I drove several times up and down my driveway without any problems with traction, and it was very slippery without them. I don't plan to use them all the time I plan to use them when I plow my driveway next year but just wanted to get prepared for next year. I put them over all season tires so I saved from getting snow tires for plowing. Great Job Team etrailer !!!

the tire chains worked awesome. I have a home plow on my ford escape and all season tires. without the chains I could have never plowed, went through over one foot of snow without any problem. they are real easy to put on and worked better then my expectations. I did have to purchase new rubber tensioners because I coated the chains and rubber tensioners with dc 10 which made the rubber break down , that was my fault. looking forward to next winter, only to plow instead of snowblow.thanks

BE CAREFUL. I've been saving up for years to get my Model 3 SR+. This winter I planned to go on a trip to Reno with my family from SF and bought these chains in preparation for crossing the Sierra. Because of the good reviews I had high hopes and confidence. Unfortunately, these chains completely destroyed the area around my left tire. I made sure to travel under 25mph, the chains were put on correctly, and there was a solid layer of snow on the ground when using them. I'm not sure when it happened but a chain snapped and caused the loose chains to hit the bottom of the rear tire well. The protective layer of the tire well completely came off, tire rims were incredibly scratched up, underside of the protective layer is extremely scratched up, the side of the car panel damaged and sticking out.

I bought these snow chains for an up coming ski trip to Colorado during Christmas time. Etrailer was a great resource in trying to decide what type of snow chain to purchase, especially for a South Texan. The video demonstration and previous review is what sold me on the type/brand. I tested them to ensure they fit properly and had them installed in a jiffy. Let's hope I never have to use them!

Great. I ended up needing them to park in the driveway at the place where we stayed. It was a little tough installing them in -9F temperature in the dark. I recommend gloves.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

Bought these for both my F350 rear tires and my 24 foot car hauler trailer for a trip last November (2019) from Alaska to Michigan and back. Some of the mountain passes along the way require chains. I haven't had to use them yet but the carry bag is top notch and keeps the chains organized, untangled and easily stored.

by:

To be honest, I never had to use these tire chains in bad weather. They were purchased as insurance because we had travel plans were included crossing the Rocky Mountains and Seaira Nevada mountains in January. The weather was mild on our actual dates of travel. I did a test install before, and it was easy enough and straight forward.

After a little practice, I found these chains are extremely easy to install and remove. I drive forward and back after the initial installation (as the instructions state), tighten them one more time and I'm good to go. I live near the top of a mountain and the roads can get very icy. Even though my Subaru with snow tires is pretty well equipped there I times I want the extra security of my chains. I'm really happy with these because I can install them with the car "in place" and I Do not have to drive over them like I see others doing.

In February 2020, I was at Stowe VT skiing and during the day got 18” snow at the mountain. All the cars were snowed in the parking lot. I put the chains on the front wheels of my Subaru Forester and was able to easily drive out of the lot! Easy to install and always keep in my subi during my ski adventures!

2006 Subaru Outback Wagon

I give these chains an excellent from my limited experience using them. I never did use them. I did however do a practice run once and put them on. It was very easy. I then took it off and placed it back in the carrying case. That too was easy and it fit back in nicely. Construction seemed solid. I just bought a new pair for a new car from etrailer.

by:

I bought these for my travel trailer. I never want the experience of having it pass me on the road spinning me around in the process. I plan to install them shortly as a practice, but they certainly look sturdy and capable and easy to install based upon my experience with similar chains for my truck. As always, etrailer's ordering process and delivery times were excellent. That's why I keep coming back to them for my needs!

by:

Needed a pair of traction chains for emergencies, like getting stuck in a snowdrift. With S Class restrictions, these were the best option I could find after comparing several chains from different manufacturers. They are easy to put on, instructions are clear and even displayed on the outside of the carrying case. Also come with extra links in case a repair is needed. We will see how they perform, although I might not need them at all. etrailer has been great to deal with.

Product received 12 hrs ago Have yet to put it to use.. Opened item in question and found everything in order and product exactly as advertised.. Tire chains are an item you hope you don't have to use but like a spare tire you're sure glad you have them at the time.. Thank You etrailer

by:

Haven't installed them yet, but I really appreciate how etrailer.com helps you make sure the product fits your vehicle. Other sites just have a vague idea of whether a set of chains will fit your vehicle tolerances, but the rep at etrailer looked everything up when they made their recommendations.

  • Recommended Tire Chains for a 2006 Dodge Magnum
According to the owner's manual for your 2006 Dodge Magnum, tire chains can only be installed on the rear two wheels of the vehicle and must be Class S complaint. With this in mind, I recommend using the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains part # TC1553 for 215/65-17 tires or part # TC1555 for 225/60-18 tires. The Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains are Class S compliant and have a diamond chain pattern that will increase traction and stopping power when driving forward and during turns....
