Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Feed the cable through the connection loop

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then feed the extra cable through the second loop to keep it from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Optional rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

I tried them on; and they fit well. I'll be ready for my subdivision's icy conditions next time. Thanks for the rapid service, and here are some photos from the test today; though you may not want to use the tension photo, because the clips should have been rotated to the next section

BMW

I got these for my BMW 430i 2017. They were hard to get on (possibly cause I didn't practice) in a snow storm but once on they got me out of the at the time biggest snow storm in the nation. They chewed up my wheels but I never got stuck and they worked.

2005 Toyota Camry

These tire cables are an excellent option for snow and ice. They are very easy to install. I've watched videos on line for installation, however, the written instructions are pretty basic and easy to follow. Obviously, doing the installation out in the snow/ice can be more challenging than in a garage, but the installation is really as easy as it gets! Recently we were hit with a snow/ice storm. We put these on our vehicle and were easily able to drive around without fear of sliding. The product grips the road/ice and you feel as though you have a lot of traction when driving. We like the product so much that we've purchased some for all of our other vehicles. This has been a good "Peace of Mind" purchase for us. Even though we live in a climate that doesn't have a lot of snow, it's also a location in which all roads are not necessarily treated. Even for that once or twice a year snow storm this has worked well. I highly recommend the product!

Arrived in a timely manner, and worked great! Easy to install and remove.

2015 Subaru Impreza

Bought it for a weekend snowboarding trip expecting heavy snow over the Sierras in California for my Subaru Impreza because California law technically does require all vehicles to carry chains and I've never driven in snow/ice conditions before... even though the chance of using it is not likely. Bottomline I did end up using it after exiting the interstate because my treads were a little worn out, the small roads were covered in ice and I had a car full of people who were freaking out about driving in icy/snow conditions, even though it is against Subaru's recommendation to not put on chains. Work perfectly as expected, got me from the interstate to the ski resort and back to the interstate. No damage to my tires or anything else and it was an easy install. Took about 10mins total to install both chains to the front tires.

Never used it and the return policy of not being able to get 100% back is ridiculous. Wont use etrailer again.

by:
1999 Mercury Sable

The service from etrailer was spectacular! They upgraded my shipping request for a faster delivery, with no additional charge. The package arrived within three business days. That is about five days earlier than I originally expected.
I have just unpacked my cable snow tire chains and the optional rubber adjusters (which I strongly recommend) and everything looks great.
As a rural mail carrier I hope I don't need to use the snow chains very soon, because snow and ice create a real problem on the back roads. I couldn't complete my route without cable snow chains.
Thank you etrailer.com

Chevrolet Colorado

Ordered chains from Mesa, AZ by phone, on Friday. Requested delivery to address in Moab, UT by the next Friday. They arrived early on Wednesday.
Chairs were intended for compliance with Colorado State chain laws. They were not required or used on I-70 on trip to Denver despite snow & ice storm and heavy traffic while crossing the mountains. Traffic was moving way too fast, and travel distances too great, to make speed limiting chains practical.
Back in St. Louis now, but not sure I will ever need them here. I guess I'll keep them just in case we have a hard winter. I may need to find a big parking lot for my first experience using chains. Can't wait.

BOUGHT CHAINS FOR WINTER TRAVEL: THEY DID A GREAT JOB IN KEEPING SNOW AWAY FROM MID-MISSOURI LAST WINTER. I "SHOVELED" ONLY 4 INCHES ALL YEAR. LATE OCTOBER TRIP TO ESTES PARK; THEY KEPT THE BAD WEATHER AWAY ALSO. THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN SNOW. I ONLY WISH THEY WOULD ALLOW FOR COOLER WEATHER IN MISSOURI IN AUGUST AND NOW IN SEPT & NOVE. I WILL HAVE TO SEE IF THEY CONTINUE TO "WORK" AT KEEPING THE SNOW AT BAY FOR THE WINTER OF 2016-17. YOUR PRODUCTS ARE GREAT AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS EVEN BETTER! !

2016 Ford C-Max

These work great on my 2018 ford cmax, which has very little room for chain clearance. Takes a bit of practice to get them on and off but work great once on. I used them without tensioners and never exceeded 35mph. They got me through snowy and icy WV mountain roads.

by:
2013 Chevrolet Sonic

Work well in snow/ice conditions. They do not do well on pavement as one would imagine, in the event you are transitioning from snow/ice covered road to clear pavement you will most likely want to pullover and remove these ASAP. Installing and removing is fairly straight forward and they seem to stay in place well.

BMW

I just received my new tire chains sized for my BMW. They are compact and appear to be just what I wanted. (Of course ultimately the sizing for my car will confirm the success of this product for me.) I have ordered from etrailer before and their depth of product is always appreciated so that a correct part is ordered.

by:
Mazda Miata

I put these on an '08 Miata. Totally disappointed. Don't waste your money, these are terrible for traction. If you're on ice or pavement, they are down right dangerous. I actually had to take them off to get traction. Chains work much better if you have enough clearance in the wheel well.

by:
Subaru Impreza

We received our tire cables in less than 24 hours after ordering them. Yeah! We had a trip planned to the coast which takes a drive over the coast range mountains usually not a problem here in Oregon....but we got a crazy snow storm and traction devices required. We have a Subaru Impreza which requires special traction device so we googled and found them available @ etrailer.com. We now have them and are leaving for the coast and our getaway. They work great and we are very happy with the service and speedy customer service. Thank You

2012 Mazda 3

The chains arrived a few days after I placed my order. They fit my 2012 Mazda 3 perfectly. I live on a steep hill and last winter my car had trouble climbing the hill when it was covered with ice and snow.

Hopefully these will help me get home!

by:

Fortunately I didn't have to use it. I purchased it just in case it became necessary to put the chains on when we went through the Rockies.
Looks well made, and glad to have purchased them.
Just noticed below though, that your instructions pdf links are both dead.
Would have been nice to stick a copy of both of them in the bag for future use.

Only tested fitted on trailer tires, but seem to be a decent basic/entry level product.

We haven't used the tire cable chains but glade to have them just in case. I can speak of ordering and delivery of them thru the internet, etrailer. It was easy and fast. Great company.

by:

Product (tire chains) appears as advertised, seems good quality, easy to use. Fortunately haven't needed to use them yet!

by:

Fantastic!

by:

It arrived fast.

Someone from etrailer
emailed my after I ordered it from their own email. He told me to talk to him with any questions or issues.
Other online retailers offer the same stuff as etrailer; it just is more expensive, and without etrailer's manuals and guidance. If you want an expert opinion, ask an expert.

by:
2014 Toyota Prius

On time delivery and the cable chains are as described. I have not used them yet as we are a little short of snow here in CA but I am confident they will work as well on my prius v as the smaller size cables we have worked on our prius hatch.

by:

Very rapid processing by Etrailer. Easy communication with friendly staff. That is how business should be done! Thank you very much also for reasonable prices and shipping cost.

The correct Konig Self-Tensioning Tire Chains for a 2014 Subaru Legacy with P225/50R17 tires is part # TH00023100. These chains have a self tensioning mechanism to maintain the correct level of tightness, nylon bumpers to protect the vehicle's wheels, and a class s rating for the best clearance. They will need to be installed on the front tires only. Please note, the owner's manual may have other stipulations for using tire chains you'll want to review before use.

The Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains, part PW1938V, will not work on the 205/70R15 tire size. I recommend the Thule # TH00023095 low profile self-tensioning chains with the diamond pattern which is better than ladder styles.

  • Cable Style Tire Chains for a 2015 Subaru Impreza with 205/55-16 Tires
I assume it is talking about cables such as # PW1034. But they are laboring under the assumption that all tire chains have to fit around the back side of the tires. While some chains do not have parts that fit around the back side of the tire none of those fit your tire size. Cables are still going to have parts that fit around the back side of the tire.
