Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2012 Nissan Versa

Speaker 1: Today on our 2012 Nissan Versa, we're going to be test fitting the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Roof Rack System. This is going to consist of part numbers RRVA118B-2. This is going to be the Vortex Aero Crossbars that you see here. These are 46" long. These also come in silver, part number RRVA118S-2. Holding those in place we have the 2500 Series Legs.

This is going to be part number RRRLKVA, and then holding it in place onto the vehicle where it grips it in the door frame is going to be the Fit Kit, and that's going to be part number DK047.Now, this is a great roof rack system with a lot of accessories that you can put onto it, such as bike racks, cargo baskets, and cargo boxes. It utilizes T-tracks on the top of it as well. We see these Vortex Aero Strips. Removing our end cap here, what you would do is remove the strip, insert your T-track accessory, and then cut the strip to length around it. These end caps do secure into place with a special tool, and you can also take these plastic portions out and replace them with actual locks that you could find on etrailer.com to secure not only your roof rack but also the T-track accessory that's inside.

You can make it keyed alike with your 2500 Series Legs. These are elliptical-shaped bars, which means they're going to cut down on wind noise and drag and eliminate the need for any fairings that you may need with other roof rack systems. With the custom fit kit here, it is padded both at the bottom as well as where it clamps onto your door frame to make sure that your vehicle doesn't get any scratches or abrasions on it once it's being installed. With a 2500 Series Leg, again, it does have that lock on the end to secure it. So let's go ahead and show you how the rear bar gets put into place. On the table here is everything that comes with the kit that you're going to need. You have the bar here, the 2500 Series Leg, the fit kit, the end cap locks, the keys, the key for end caps, and of course, our tightening tool.

So, first things first, we're going to go ahead and remove our endcap here so we can install our leg on it. To make it a little bit easier on us, we'll flip this upside down. With our leg, I'm going to make sure that this top bracket here slides into that bottom channel like so.Now, there usually is a plastic strip that comes along with this that you would put in this place here and cut it to length, according to the instructions, but for today's purposes, we're going to go ahead and just measure it out. Once you have it measured out to its proper point, we'll take our included too and we're going to tighten down the screw in the center here till it's nice and tight. With that finished, we can go ahead and replace our end cap, lock that in.Next, we're going to take our fit kit and installing that as well.

Now with our pads here, there is a number on the bottom and there's also an arrow with a facing a particular direction. With this, you want it facing forward. So you see how it fits in, and that just kind of pushes into place there. Then we'll take our clamps, which are also numbered on the inside, and we'll install them on the end. Now, what you want to do here, you want to remove the screw completely. We'll line up our clamps, and at this point we're just going to loosely install this screw back into place because we don't want to tighten it too much because we want to be able to move this around once we get it on the vehicle. All right. Now we can set this on our roof. Our first step though is we're going to have to open up the rear doors on both sides. Set them down in no particular place. So our next step is going to be to measure from center to center of the bars on both sides to keep them even. How we got the first bar in place, we measure from the center of the door jam to the center of this bar here on both sides, and again, this is in concordance with the instructions. So I'll move this as needed. I'll do this on the other side as well. Now we can start tightening it down. We're going to take our blue handle tightening tool here. One thing I'd like to point out is that you see that it has a curved end. As you tighten it down, this end will straighten out, and that's when you know everything is tightened to its specs so you don't over-tighten it. What I'm doing right now is I'm just getting it snug on our door frame here on both sides, and then I'm going to start giving it about five or six turns each side to tighten it down evenly until ready to put on the endcaps. Some other accessories that you can put on this roof rack system are things like ski and snowboard carriers, kayak carriers, just a wide variety of products that Rhino-Rack offers and you can find them on etrailer.com.All right. Now we can put our endcaps in place. We'll take our endcap, we'll slide it in, push it in place there. Do the same on the other side. I'm also going to give you a couple quick measurements here to give you an idea of how high this can sit off the roof because with the Series Legs here, this is sitting pretty high up there.Measuring from the center of the roof to the bottom of the bar it's going to be about 2-7/8", and from the center to the top it's going to be about 4-1/4", so that's more than enough space in between the roof rack and the roof itself where you can attach those accessories where it won't make contact or damage it. Also, if you have a sunroof on your vehicle, it shouldn't impede that at all either. However, if you do have a bike rack or a cargo basket fully loaded, just keep that in mind when you're pulling into garages or low clearance areas. These bars do have a carrying capacity of 165 pounds once they're installed, but you always want to double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can take those weights and go by their recommendations. There you have it for the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Roof Rack System on our 2012 Nissan Versa.

Nissan Versa

This rack works perfectly on my Nissan Versa for carrying my two Perception Sound 9'6" kayaks. The Rhino-Racks look good to me. The kayaks can rest directly on the rubber pads on the rails, unlike the Yakama racks I had in the past that had bare pipe rails. Also, I expect I can buy parts to adapt this product to a different car without having to buy new towers. I am sorry there are not hooks or loops to attach bungees when carrying lumber. They are noisy in the wind, but less so when carrying the kayaks.

by:

Very happy! Rack arrived in just a few days. Very good instructions ....videos were very helpful, too. I gave myself plenty of time....didn't want to rush. My new rack looks great! Can't wait to show it off to my kids!

by:

Pretty easy to install, good directions. Components were solid and well made. Used regularly to transport kayaks.

by:

The product itself is great. The instructions to put it together could be better. They need to put the instructions in front of any common idiot with the parts laid out and they would see that the pictures and instructions could be better presented. However, we figured it out and after putting it together the actual installation on the car is very easy. Also very easy to remove if it is for temporary usage.

This was a great purchase. I originally ordered roof crossbars from somewhere else and immediately returned them. They were a universal fit and were not secure at all when they were tightened down. They were from a third seller on Amazon. I found these on etrailer and I am glad that I made the purchase. I did not want to spend the money at first that these cost, but am glad that I did. The install was easy and the crossbars are very secure and hold up well with the cargo basket installed. They were well worth the money. Can't wait to try them out when we go camping. Thank you etrailer.

by:

Ease of order, receipt, installation and excellent customer service is what I received in this order.
Thank you, e-trailer!

by:

Takes a little while to assemble the rack bars.
The stickers are great I can mark the positions after measuring the distance between the bars.
One of the screws is underneath the bar; it is hard to reach to tighten the bars.
Finally, I got the roof rack installed and it looks good.

by:

Pretty nice rack system. Held up to my 90lb canoe no problem. However a piece did fly off on the highway and the "locking" bar end cap can pull off super easy.
The directions were ok. There is some stuff you have to kind of figure out for yourself, mainly the roof trim. I plan to leave the rack on so I drilled theough the trim

by:

Just followed all the etrailer website prompts for my naked roof Toyota Matrix and it set me up with the three packages needed- rails legs and fitkit. Installed easily enough. I like the little arrow stickers hidden in the door jams for fast re-install later. Held two 10’ kayaks on a 2 hr journey with ease.

by:

This is a perfect fit for our 2015 Prius V with "naked" roof. Instructions were clear and accurate, and the bars are solid and able to support our canoe and kayak easily. We added the air deflector, as there was a bit of wind noise, but now there is none. Great product at much lower price than the big names.

by:

Absolutely love the Rhino Rack. Easy to install (watch the [online] video). Looks GREAT. Hauls my kayaks no problem. Very well made and I highly recommend this product.

by:

The Rhino 2500 series is well built. The etrailer customer service person Trevor W. was great. He was so helpful in getting the right components for my Rhino 2500 roof rack to mount to my 2010 Silverado. Thanks for the help Trevor.

by: 04/26/2023

This was the kit for my 2020 equinox. The spacing of the feet on the vortex aero bars was incorrect I had to use the Euro sizes. Went back and forth with customer service trying to get confirmation that was the right size but it never was confirmed. Everything is installed now and sturdy.

by:

Seemed to work well with my 2012 Kia Soul. I have only had it on my car for a day at writing this so I can't really give it five stars. I would bump it up to five stars once its been on for a few months. Easy to install, and after doing a bit of research Etrailer.com Had the best deal, and support for installation.

by:

Once installed the product is very sturdy and looks great. But the directions are hard to follow because of the separate components and would have been really tough without the video which was great. I have one problem, how can I eliminate the annoying wind sound when driving when nothing on the rack. I saw a video where wrapping a line around the crossbar can help. It has helped a lot but not completely. Is there another secret for this?

by:

Installed this and 65" Vortex Areo crossbars on a 2015 RAM 5500 chassis cab/crew cab. It is listed to fit 1500 to 3500 RAM's and neither Rhino-Rack or etrailer would confirm it would fit the 5500. My research suggested there was not much, if any difference, between the 3500 and 5500 crew cab, so ordered it any way. Installation was relatively easy, fit seemed to be good and have made multiple 200-300 mile trips with a 75lb kayak. Good price, great customer service and fast delivery through etrailer.

by:

The roof rack is great, just pretty pricy, by me standards.
My only problem with the whole experience was that the roof rack comes in there separate packages. In my order, one package was omitted, which created some confusion. I had to go back to the company and request that the 3rd package be sent.
Otherwise I'm happy with the purchase.
I responded to a previous request fro feedback, so I'm not sure why I'm being asked again, but . . .

by:

Customer support was great. After reading the instructions and watching the video on how to install the Rhino Rack installation went well. The ski rack has one draw back, if you leave car out over night with skis locked in the ski rack, every thing can be easily stolen. All you need is an Allen wrench to remove the ski rack with the skis. The roof rack has locking covers the prevent theft of the roof rack. The ski rack can be easily removed from the roof rack.

by:

Fairly easy installation. Read the instructions thoroughly before hand and get familiar with the parts. Take care when installing mounting studs onto car itself so as not to strip or cross thread them. Once installed they look great.

by:

Ive had these racks for a year and they've been really good. They fit my 2019 nissan frontier easily. The only thing that keeps it from 5 stars is when it rains really heavy, I get a slow, occasional drip where the mount sit under the door's weather seal.

This review covers the Rhino Rack 2500 Vortex Aero crossbars and associated parts (DK284, RRRLKVA, RRVA137S-2) for a naked roof installation on a 2018 Honda CR-V.

Very solid racks. We just took our first trip using them and the didn't budge. As recommended, a few days after installing, I tightened the bolts a bit. I'm not sure they needed it--just a little insurance.

The installation process was clear, but fairly detailed. It would be easy to miss a step, so take your time. Also, I tried a couple shortcuts in the order when installing on the car, but had to back track. So, go in the order they give you.

The racks easily supported our filled "pod" and a couple surfboards, strapped side-by-side. Sorry, no photos of the rack loaded. One thing to watch out for is that our old Thule pod almost didn't fit because of the thickness of the racks. I had to loosen the bolts almost entirely.

Of note: I feel that although I followed the measurements to the millimeter, the fit on our 2018 Honda CR-V wasn't exact. Where the pads sit on the roof of the car didn't align perfectly. I could have adjusted this by just re-trimming the rubber pads that go in the channels, but it's not a big deal, so I just left it.

Finally, I do have one concern. The angle of final installation doesn't really protect the racks from theft very well. The plastic plate that locks over the screw would allow someone with the proper tool to get up under it and loosen the bolts. That being said, someone so inclined could also just break the little plastic door or drill a hole in it to access the bolt. So, I guess it's just a deterrent anyway.

Overall, I'm very happy with the racks and etrailer.com! Despite shipping delays due to Covid-19, they were able to get the racks to me in time for an upcoming trip. I did choose to expedite shipping, but the cost was very reasonable.

by:

Easy assembly and installation. Pay careful attention to pad direction as shown in instruction sheet for the fit kit. One gripe: one end-cap refuses to lock (blue plastic key lock). Had to tape it on so I don’t lose it.

All items ordered were as described wind were easy to install . The shipping was less than stellar . Tforce sat on the items for 3 business days before finally calling . No tracking was provided for tforce till I called in to etrailer questioning why shipment went from ups to T FORCE . Driver from t force claimed he could not get into address location per length of his trailer . Had to meet driver at another address . Came back to original delivery address and fed ex freight was sitting in parking lot just fine ( had same size trailer as TFORCE ) . Tforce Driver was basically being lazy by not coming to original address . Hope etrailer changes shipping companies
