If you are an energy-conscious RV owner, the Go Power Solar Flex charging system provides clean, renewable power and an extra boost to your batteries while you are on the road. This kit comes with everything you need to charge your RV batteries with sunlight. Using a flexible solar panel, this system collects solar energy to create DC power that passes through a solar controller to charge your RV batteries.

How It Works

Collecting Solar Power

solar flex panel

The charging process starts with the flexible solar panel, which installs on the roof of your RV. When solar energy interacts with the silicon cells in each panel, it generates a flow of DC electrical current that charges your RV's batteries. Each of the monocrystalline cells is made from a single crystal of silicon, so the electrons that create the current have more space to move, making these panels more efficient than one with polycrystalline cells. And in optimal sunlight conditions, the panel produces 55 watts per hour.

solar flex panel bent

The silicon cells are set between a laminated backsheet to withstand the elements. The panel is low profile and bends up to 30 degrees to suit the shape of your RV's roof, making them more aerodynamic than traditional solar panels.

Charging and Protecting RV Battery Bank

The solar controller prevents harmful overcharging by adjusting the power generated by the solar panel before it reaches your batteries. It uses pulse width modulation technology to regulate the output through pulses that provide a consistent charge. Typically, this type of technology is a good fit for smaller systems with lower voltages.

Using a multistage charging system, the controller automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. The controller is compatible with multiple battery types and includes preset charging profiles for sealed/gel, AGM, flooded/wet cell, and lithium batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Bulk: This mode charges at the full rated load for a quicker recharge time. As the name suggests, this is where the bulk of the charging happens. It typically charges the battery to at least 80% capacity.
  2. Absorption: This mode provides controlled voltage to ensure a full charge. Once the battery reaches between 80% to 90% capacity, the absorption state will kick in and start charging at a regulated voltage. In each charging profile, this mode is set to last for 30 minutes after the bulk charge is completed.
  3. Float: Once the battery reaches full charge, this mode maintains a lower voltage to compensate for self-discharge. This reduces battery stress and minimizes gassing and water loss.
  4. Equalization: On flooded/wet cell batteries, this mode activates to prevent stratification and sulfate buildup during extended float cycles. These two issues can damage a battery by causing the accumulation of acid at the bottom of the battery and hardened sulfate crystals on the battery plates. This mode is especially helpful when your battery is going unused during storage.

With Maximum Power Boost Technology, you can simply press a button to activate Bulk mode for the highest charging voltage. This lets you quickly top off your battery bank before the end of the day by capturing as much power as possible.

The backlit, digital display acts as an information center for your solar panel output. It shows the charging current, battery voltage, and battery state of charge. It also allows you to input your battery type and choose a charging profile. Additionally, a built-in USB port on the front of the controller provides a convenient outlet to charge your cell phone or tablet.

Lastly, the controller includes several built-in safety features to help protect your equipment. The charging process will shut down if the controller starts to overheat and when an overcurrent is detected. Also, if the battery or solar panel is wired incorrectly, it activates a reverse polarity alarm.

How It Installs

The system includes a 55-watt solar panel, a 10-amp PWM solar controller, MC4 cables, and all the necessary installation hardware.

  1. Solar Panel: The solar panel installs anywhere on your RV roof with included mounting hardware. To maximize sunlight collection, it is important to install the panel where it avoids shadows cast by objects, like an air conditioner or vent. The panel uses MC4 cables to connect to the solar controller. These cables can enter the RV through the refrigerator vent or using a Go Power cable entry plate (sold separately). The cable entry plate provides a covered housing and uses a quick connect setup for the MC4 cables.
  2. Solar Controller: The solar controller flush-mounts to a wall inside your RV. It is wired to the solar panel using MC4 cables. Then, the battery bank is wired to the terminals on the controller. You can also install a fuse or circuit breaker (sold separately) up to 10 amps between the solar controller and battery for additional current protection.

Note: This kit may require more wiring and additional parts depending on your RV setup.

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Go Power Solar Flex Kit. This solar flex kit is perfect for RVs and boats. Its flexible design can conform to almost any surface, which gives you a lot of options when it comes to mounting the panels. This kit converts the sun's energy into DC electricity and that electricity charges your batteries and ensures that you have power when you need it. This unit features 50 watts or 2.88 amps of charging power. The kit comes with what you see and it comes with what you need to keep your batteries charged. It's able to charge one battery at a time.

The panel can be installed by adhesives or screws. It features the stainless steel grommets, which are already pressed in and included for ease of installation and it comes with the mounting hardware. The solar panel is durable, allowing a bend of up to 30 degrees, so it's a really nice durable design. Nice flexible design as well. Very versatile when it comes to installation options available with this panel. The kit comes with one solar panel.

This is a 50 watt solar panel. It comes with your 10 amp digital PWM flush-mounted solar controller. It comes with your MC4 red output cable, your MC4 black output cable, and all the necessary mounting hardware and connectors, as well as the appropriate fuse holder and fuse, so it is fuse-protected. Now the solar controller, which is this unit here. This is the brains of the unit.

It basically regulates current flow from your solar module to your batteries. This is how you would choose your battery type and charging profile. It features a back-lit visual display, so it's always easy to see. You'll want to mount this in a location that's easily accessible so you can easily control what's going on with your unit. This works for sealed gel AGM and flooded battery types. The battery charging profile includes float charge, bulk or absorption charge, and equalization charge.

So the unit features an automatic equalize feature that will actually charge and recondition your battery once a month at a higher voltage to ensure that any excess sulfation is removed. It also features maximum power boost technology, which allows you to override the normal charging algorithm of the solar controller and it can also be used, before the end of the day, if you know you'll require many loads throughout the night. It can also be used when you have just installed the solar controller to put batteries on a boost charge right away. The solar controller also displays voltage, PV charging current, and battery state of charge. You can view that anytime with the easy to navigate buttons right there. Errors will also be displayed so you can quickly identify and resolve any issues. It also offers, located right here on the side, it offers a standard USB connector for delivering five volts to small mobile appliances such as cell phones, tablets, and small music players. It also has a connection point, or excuse me, it has the connection points right here for easy connecting of these wires as well as the cables from your battery. The controller offers battery reverse polarity protection, solar array reverse polarity protection, over temperature protection, and over current protection. When it comes to the solar panel here, again, really nice design, thin construction. This is made from laminate TPT when it comes to the back sheet and then again, it has the stainless steel grommets. Then when it comes to the cells, that's a mono-crystalline cell construction. The panel measures 44-5/8" inches long by 11-5/16" wide by 1/8" thick or 3mm thick. This panel weighs 1.6 pounds. Maximum power voltage is 17.6V, open circuit voltage is 19 amps, short circuit current is 3.04 amps, and maximum system voltage is 600V DC.Please note that this can be used, again, using hardware or an adhesive. So any type of sealant or adhesive required will depend on the roof membrane material. So that's why it's not included with this kit. Basically, the way that you get it installed is you have these cables right here with quick connectors on them, positive and negative. Positive connects to the red cable with the quick connect, negative connects to the black cable with the quick connect. The other end of these cables have wiring that strip back, plugs into the appropriate positive and negative solar panel indicator right here. Then you have a battery with positive and negative for your battery ports. That's going to do it for today's look at the Go Power Solar Flex Kit.

system installed and worked fine. Put it on top of an old airstream, with corrugated plastic for thermal insulation, panel failed after 9 months, go power handled warranty on replacement, easy process. I have a new air gap system, but i've read that many brands of flexible panels can just fail. some people have had flexible panels working for a while.
