Raw Lumens vs. Effective Lumens

Lumens are used to measure the amount of usable light that is put out by a light source. Raw lumens represent the number of lumens that the manufacturer claims the LEDs are capable of producing. It does not include the light's drive method or the amount of light lost from the lens or reflector. Effective lumens take these factors into account and represent the number of lumens that are actually produced by the complete light assembly, not just the amount of light that the diodes are capable of producing. This light has a 12,840 raw lumen capacity and produces 8,988 effective lumens.

Video Transcript for Review of Vision X Off Road Lights - Light Bar - XPL-H24EMH

Today we're going to take a look at the Vision X XPL LED off-road light bar. This is going to be a weatherproof design with 8988 lumens. There's a spot beam, and it's going to measure 32 inches long. This is going to be a great addition to your off-road vehicle, whether that's a Jeep, truck, maybe an ATV or UTV. It's going to be a nice low-profile design, but still offer you a wide array of LEDs here. We'll have 24 high-performance Cree LEDs.

These are going to have a diffusing lens and reflector system to offer that increased visibility and spot beam to really throw that light a good distance away. It's also going to have modulated diffusers to remove any hot spots or glare from our lighting elements, so we don't have to worry about it just being bright in one spot. It's going to give us a nice, solid light, and the long-distance iris reflectors are going to make sure that that LED brightness is projected very far.Again, this is going to work for up to 1805 feet away, so we're going to be able to light a very bright swath in front of us, so that even if we're driving around at night, we'll be able to pretty much light up that night sky and be able to see wherever we're going. Our housing itself is going to be made of a durable aluminum. The nice thing about this is that we don't have to worry about this ever corroding, but it does also have a nice black powder coat finish, and there's fins designed in the back of this to help dissipate any heat generated by those LEDs, because we know that LEDs are going to be a lot more efficient than your traditional incandescent bulbs, but they do still produce some heat. That's going to help to increase the longevity of our LEDs by letting that heat escape so we don't have them burning out prematurely. At the front, we'll have an impact resistance polycarbonate lens with a scratch resistant surface.

This will last for a long time, even if we're going through brush, briars, things like that. When you're off road, you never know what you're going to encounter. Something that I really like about this is it's going to be weatherproof. Our wiring harness, our light itself, it's all going to be able to withstand any rain, wind, dust, anything like that. Pretty much as long as you don't submerge this light in solid water, you're going to be fine.

So any kind of weather you can throw at this, really heavy rain, should be just fine. It can weather all those storms. It'll be a pretty easy installation. We have all this hardware that comes with it. You're going to have two different mounting options. One is going to be these two brackets that are going to mount to the side, so these are going to be kind of little feet here, mounts up to either end.

You can either have them flipped out or flipped in. It depends on where you need to mount them. There's also going to be your bolts themselves. They have an attached flat washer and lock washer, and then a rubber grommet that will actually go over that mounting portion first, and then your bracket goes in place, then the hardware. At the bottom of that foot, we'll put in our bolt, washer, and lock nut. That's one option of mounting it up.Or we can mount it with the feet. Now, these mount sort of to the back of this. It hides the brackets a little bit, also allows you for a little greater adjustability when it comes to that mounting position. We'll have three little rubber grommets for these, so put those over the bolts. Actually, it goes the other way. Our bolt is going to fit in our light bar itself. It's going to sit like that, and there'll be a channel on the bottom side of the back of our light. There's going to be this larger channel here below the fins, and there'll be an opening on one side that we can pass our bolt through. You can slide this anywhere along here. Once you find your spot, you can turn your little grommet, press it into place, and that keeps that bolt from moving around. That's something I like. It makes it a little easier to get this mounted up so you don't have to chase that bolt around. It also makes it so that it's a quieter mount. There's no chatter between these brackets, since both options have a rubber grommet to provide the clamping force there. Then we'll put on our lock nut, tighten that all the way down, and then you repeat with the other two brackets there. That allows you to offset it, get it to where you need it to be.Then same thing for actually mounting the bracket to your vehicle. You'll just have to drill a hole to allow that hardware to go through so you can get your bolt, washer, and lock nut installed.Something else I like about the hardware that they've included with this, we'll have lock nuts and lock tight on all of our bolts. Nothing's going to rattle apart. Especially if this is going to be used in an off-road application, a lot of times when you're bouncing around on the trail, it can make any of your bolts come loose. They just get jarred loose. By having those lock nuts and lock tight on there, we don't have to worry about anything shaking apart on us.Now the fun part. We can connect our wiring. We'll have our wiring harness here. This is going to be a weatherproof connector, so we can snap that into place. Then we'll have our switch that we can mount up inside our vehicle. We'll have our two ring terminals. Black is for ground. Red is for power. Those are going to run into the inline fuse holder. This is going to be a 30-amp fuse, so that keeps our wiring and our light protected. We don't have to worry about ruining anything on our vehicle, and we'll also have a relay. This is going to be very well protected. Don't have to worry about any shorts or back feed there. You'll notice that there's a little single wire coming off of our light. That's going to be for the running light circuit. There's kind of a halo light that goes around all of our LEDs. I'm going to connect this to our power and ground here so you can see what the light is going to look like, and just how insanely bright it is. We've got our power, that little light coming off of our harness there. Those are going to both need to go to power. I'll get my switch within reach. If I turn my power source on, you'll see we'll have that super bright light. Turn it off, we'll have our running light circuit. It's a little hard to tell after that super bright light, but that's going to be our running light. Just has a little illumination there so we can have our daytime lights going. Those are still going to be SAE compliant for a daytime running light.Get a little bit better look at them with the lights in the studio off. Then if we flip the switch, bam! Super bright light. This is going to do a great job of illuminating our trail, our road, wherever we are. As you can see, it's blowing out my hardware there. It's just going to be a really powerful light. With that nice, sleek housing, you get a lot of light in a pretty small package here. Turn the lights back on in the studio. Turn our lights off on our light so you're not continuously blinded there.Let's go over some more numbers. Got all our lights disconnected. One note I would say about the halo connection, this little wire here, it doesn't come with any wiring connectors. I would suggest using a heat shrink butt connector here, just so that you keep that wiring nice and protected from any water, any dirt or dust. Again, out on the road, you don't want anything to get in here and cause an issue with that light. We do have heat shrink butt connectors available here at etrailer.com, so definitely pick those up so you can get that wired up. I think that this is about a 16-gauge wire, so it's going to be a smaller, one of the pink or magenta butt connectors will do just fine for you.As far as our dimensions, it's going to be 32 inches long. That's from the outside edge to outside edge. Then it'll be 2 inches tall and 2 3/16 of an inch thick. The beam distance, again, is going to be 1805 feet, so plenty of feet in front of you, even if you're going at a pretty good clip there. The effective lumen output for this is going to be 8988 lumens. The raw lumen output is at 12,840 lumens, but the important thing to remember is that raw lumen output, that's ideal conditions, nothing in the way of those lights, no reflectors, no beams, no nothing. That's just the raw power of the diodes on their own. It's not really realistic for any real-world application. The effective lumen output, that 8988 lumens, that's going to be the number to pay attention to, and that's going to be plenty of light to get you out on the road. We'll have 24 diodes in total, and this is going to be at 120 watts. Our input voltage is going to be between 9 and 32 volts DC. The power draw at 12 volts will be 10 amps. This can operate in any temperature between -40 degrees Fahrenheit all the way up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit, so whether you're in the tundra or the desert, this will do just fine. IP rated at IP 68. Again, that's going to be completely dust proof and waterproof for water jets. So anything that's sprayed at this will do just fine. Stops just short of being submersible, so should be just fine as long as you don't get flooded out. There's also a limited lifetime warranty from Vision X on this light.Overall, I think it's a really cool light, very small package, very powerful. It'll get you going wherever you need to go. That's going to do it for our look at the Vision X XPL LED off road light bar with a weatherproof design and 32 inches long.
