Video Transcript for Westin PRO TRAXX Oval Nerf Bars Installation - 2016 Toyota Tundra

Rob here at etrailer.com. And today we're going to be taking a look at the Westin Pro Traxx four inch Nerf bars on our 2016 Toyota Tundra. Now here's where our Nerf bars are going to look like once we have them installed and Nerf bars are going to do two different things for you. They're going to give your truck a really nice clean appearance, but at the same time, they're going to make it easier getting in and out. So we don't have to worry about slipping or if we're a little bit shorter, it's going to be a little bit easier to get it inside of our truck. Now, one thing, a lot of people don't really think about when it comes to Nerf bars, but it's actually going to save your seat quite a bit because it will make it easier for us to get in. And as you can see, when you get out, if that step wasn't there end up rolling off your seat, which ends up taking a lot of wear and tear right here over time.

It just loses all that cushion. But since our Nerf bars are there, we can actually use the step, go over that section of the cushion and not have to worry about causing so much damage to the seat. And the Nerf bars we have here are a black powder coated steel. They're also going to be available in a polished stainless steel, but they're all going to be four inches wide and have that over look to them. That means we're going to have a really wide area to step on because we're going to have this four inch pad, so whether we are getting in or out, we don't have to worry about slipping because the pad here is going to have extruded plastics or make sure we have that secure grip. On the end cap of the bar here, it's going to be this domed piece, which gives us a nice, finished look to it.

But also we're not going to have to worry about water getting to the inside of the tube here and then causing roster corrosion to be fully sealed off. We're not going to have to worry about that. These are going to be cabbling bars. So they're going to run all the way from the front wheel well to the back of the cab here. And you can see since we have the double cab on our Tundra, we are going to get that rear step pad for our rear passengers to get in or get out as well. And another nice thing that I really like is the fact they do include these covers here for the brackets. It's just going to give it a really nice clean look, rather than just having a metal bracket come down and hold the bar in place.

And the fact that it is black plastic means that we're not going to have to worry about it rusting, but it is going to be UV and fade resistance. So over time, we're not going to have to worry about it fading and looking gray. One of my favorite things about the kit is how easy they are to install. We're not going to have to cut or drill anything at all. All of our mounting brackets are going to mount into existing holes that are already there, and everything is going to come included that you need to get it installed.

In fact, let's go in and install one side together. To begin our installation, we're going to start on the passenger side. We already have our driver's side installed, but they're going to install exactly the same. And we'd go to the very bottom of the door and go towards the inside of the truck at the very front, right behind our mudflap here, we're going to find a bolt. There'll be a threaded hole just towards the inside of that. Now, if we move further down on our frame rail, we'll find another two bolts here. We continue to move further down. We'll find another set, we're going to skip these, then at the back, we're going to have another set of two bolts. We're going to pull these out. We want to grab a 12 millimeter socket and remove them. Now we're not going to be reusing these bolts so we can get rid of them. At this point, we want to get our brackets in place. We want to start with our front bracket. They are going to be labeled. So we'll have a F stamped into our bracket and we'll have one section that have a curved section. And then it'll have another section that we'll have a flat piece on it. And the flat piece with the oblong holes are going to mount up and line up with the bolt that we just removed and that threaded hole on the frame. So, we want to grab of our new bolts out of our kit, followed up with a lock washer and then a flat washer. And right now we just want to pass the bolts through our bracket. We're just going to loosely line everything up, just get a couple threads started on each one of the bolts so that our bracket will hold itself up.When you get the rest of the hardware in place, you don't need to crank it down or anything right now. I just want it up there real loose so we can get the other bolt in and continue to work on putting the rest of the brackets in. Each one of our brackets is going to get the same combination of hardware and each one is labeled. So we'll either have an R for rear, C for center or, an F for front. Just want to make sure you put the brackets in the right spot. And then let's use that same combination of hardware to hang them all.I'm going to come back with a 13 millimeter socket and just take up some of the slack that's in the bolts. We don't need to really crank down on these, just enough to where they're not super loose, but I still have a little bit of play on them. We'll do that for all the remaining brackets we have.Next we're going to grab our bracket covers. Now, if we look on the backside, there's a small channel, it's got several holes going through it. This channel here, we want to get our frame brackets to sit right in between. This is going to give us a nice clean appearance. What I like to do is just kind of go around the bracket here and then rotate it up. So it can either get right behind the pinch weld or pretty even with it. But then we'll grab one of the small bolts out of our kit, followed up with a flat washer. There's going to be two holes that pass through our bracket and we're going to pass our bolt through the plastic, through the bracket all the way to the side. Then on the other side, we're going to take a flat washer and then we're going to secure it down with the nylon lock nut. For now we just want to get these loosely installed so that the covers won't fall off and we can always come back and tighten them up later at the very end. Now that we have this one loosely in place, we're going to repeat that for the front and the rear brackets as well. At this point, we can get ready to set our board on. Now on each one of the brackets, we'll have this curved piece with two oblong holes and that's what's going to actually mount the board up.I'd like to go over the hardware that way it's a little bit easier for you to see, rather than me trying to hold everything together. We're going to have an Allen head bolt. We going to have the star lock washer, and then a flat washer. And that's being a combination for each one of these holes on each one of the brackets. Both brackets are going to get two bolts come up through, and we're going to thread it directly into the board. And again, we'll have two bolts for each one. And when you first get your board up, what I like to do is just set it on the brackets. And then I usually get the center of the board attached that way. I know I have at least one bolt in there holding it up. So it doesn't fall off.You want to make sure you grab the appropriate board is if you look at the bottom where those threaded holes are, we'll have two sets that are going to be going towards the front and then one set that's very much farther away from the other two. Just want to make sure you grab the appropriate ones. And again, we'll just kind of loosely set it up there. Take one of our bolts, go through our bracket and it'll get at least a couple threads going into the board that we don't have to worry about it falling. Then we'll get the rest of the hardware in place. Now that we have our boards loosely attached and everything is real loose on there. We want to tighten up our frame brackets first. So I'm going to come back with that 13 millimeter socket and tighten them down all the way.We can take the included Allen key, we'll tighten up. The bolts are attaching the boards to the brackets. And for our bracket covers here, I'm going to use a 10 millimeter ratcheting wrench and a 10 millimeter wrench because of the limited space in here. We're going to tighten up those nuts and bolts that way the cover is not going to move around and be nice and secure. These are just plastic cover so we don't really need to crank on too tight. We just want it to be snug so they're not moving around and we're driving down the road and you want to make sure you come back with a torque wrench. We're going to torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. Now the included Allen key is a six millimeter just so you can use the correct size with a torque wrench. Once you have your last full torque down we're just going to repeat that entire process on the other side, but that'll finish up your installation and your look at the Western Protrax Nerf bars are 2016 Toyota Tundra..

Installed these on my own with relative ease. I have now had them on my 2019 Double Cab Tundra for a year. No problems, still look good and function well!

Great quality for price ! Super easy to install . I did not use the bracket covers that come with the kit . The system fit my 2020 tundra double cab perfect!!

by:

Great product. They fit perfectly and no tweaking or modification needed. They seem to be very solid and should last forever. I am very pleased with the purchase from etrailer, the shipping and the install of a Westin product.

Installation of Nerf Bars was a breeze. So easy using the factory mounting holes. Perfect size for the regular cab truck.
Thule rack also straight forward install. We plan to load it up this week and really test it out. Looking forward to putting all of this equipment to work.

I haven't had any reason to dislike the nerf bars I purchased a year ago . They look good on my truck and the way they were installed in exactly right place . At times I wish I had got stainless but other than that , they are perfect .

by:

These arrived a day earlier than was told. The box was in good condition and all of the parts were included. The installation instructions were good and the online videos helped. I installed them right after they were delivered. The bars look really good, I'm surprised at only 3 mounts per side though. Kinda looks like it should have 4. They are solid and I'm expecting many years of use.

by:

These rails look amazing on my truck!! Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the drivers side and passenger side are different and instructions only displays drivers side. 1.5 hour installation still not bad!

by:

I like that feel very solid no flexing when anyone stands on them. I have had a couple of friends who really like the look of them on the truck and ask where I got them. After one year of them on my 2022 Colorado I have had no problems at all.

by:

Made it easier to enter the truck. Not to hard for one person to install by themselves. I love the way they look.

by:

Quality of the product is great, however the instructions weren't very clear. Now that they are installed I am very happy.

by:

Parts fit and installation was a breeze. The instructions should tell you that brackets have a stamp for location: Driver Side and Passenger Side. Found out via [online] (PF = Passenger Front, DF= Driver Front, PR = Passenger Rear, DR = Driver Rear. Otherwise the running board looks great

by:

These nerf bars are great! They are very well constructed, are easy to install, and look good. The fit my 2020 F-350 perfectly. They also are a great price. I went with the matte black finish and it looks great. I like the fact that the ends of the bars welded shut unlike other bars I have had which typically have had a plastic cap over the end. The plastic cap will eventually leak and the bars rust from the inside out. These bars do ride a bit higher than my old OEM Ford nerf bars did. This gives improves the look but creates a higher step. The one thing I would suggest to the manufacturer is to supply a few extra spacer washer in the kit for the purpose of leveling it out visually.

by:

We were able to mount the running boards in a bout 2 hours total. They are very sturdy, everything lined up exactly, and they look Great! I had to call tech support because the instructions had not been updated to make sure it would fit my 2019 4Runner. They answered the phone quickly and confirmed that they would fit all the way up to a 2023 4Runner and they were easy to mount!

by:

We really like the look and fitment of the nerf bars, however, the steps are a little too slick when it gets wet.

by:

Super easy to install, so save yourself a little time and put the little black plastic vanity pieces on before you mount anything to the vehicle..did passenger that way and it was much easier. Even with doing the drivers side the order of instructions it still only took 45 minutes start to finish, had I done both sides with the vanity pieces first probably would have been done in 30 minutes.

by:

Perfect fit easy to install

by:

Installed one year ago on my 2015 Jeep Rubicon Wrangler Unlimited. Installation was simple, with the exception of one thing. To install the step you must permanently remove the "rock sliders" with leaves the bottom seam of the body exposed.
The steps still look in newish condition, except for the color (now dark gray) which has caught up with all the black plastic on my Jeep, thanks to the AZ sun. The rubber tread can be slick when wet.

by:

Good points:
The rails and brackets lined
up pervert with the Dodge provided rod posts.
All in all installation was tight and sturdy.

Not so good points:
The stainless finish lacked a brilliant shine that I expected.
Had some dull spots. Stainless thickness gauge seamed a little light.
Installation instructions we’re not clear.
Brackets instructions should have diagram showing the layout.
Hardware could of been labeled better as well.

Ordered Westin 4" running boards cab length for 2024 Chevy 2500. Product arrived quickly and matched exactly as ordered. Perfect fit and easy to install. Would highly recommend.

by:

Great nerfs! Easy install and they look fine on my 19 Colorado. The price was right and etrailer under-promised and over delivers with fantastic shipping! I am 73 years old and had them install with no hoist in an hour and a half. Simple tools and follow the directions for a great install.

by:

The nerf bars I purchased a year ago have held up wonderfully. They have no rust and the color is still fantastic. They were a great addition to my truck. They changed the look of my stock 2019 Ram 1500 completely.

by:

Easy installation and a nice upgrade for my truck.
