Video Transcript for Westin HDX Nerf Bars Installation-2019 Ford F-150

Hi there Ford owners. Today in your 2019 Ford F-150 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install Westin's HDX Running Boards. Now, unlike traditional running boards, these will provide two steps located in the correct position for each door, your front and your rear. And what I like about these, is how they're tucked up nicely under the cab. It really helps protect the bottom side of your cab. Any rocks that your tires and stuff might be throwing up, they could scratch.

Like we can see there's a lot of dirt that's built up on here. And this is before we put our running boards on. So this is going to now take up that dirt and rocks and keep it off of our pink right here.I liked that the steps protrude downward. So it gives you a lower step to help step you up into the truck. But again, we get this full protection all the way across the bottom of our truck, which is really nice.

Each step has raised holes for traction, and this really grips the sole of your shoes nicely. It's not quite as good as a serrated edge, but definitely grips better than your plastic raised running board set pads will. And we can see here when we get in and out, even though the steps aren't very large, they're positioned properly to make it easy for you to get in and out. The positioning's so natural that when you turn to get out, it's just right there. It's a solid steel construction, so it's going to be a heavy duty running board. You can see when you push on her, when I'm stepping on it, there's really not a lot of flex.

Some of the round nerf bars have a little bit of flex to them, but not with this style. And to protect it against rust and corrosion it has a matte black powder coat finish. And I like that it's matte because it matches the plastic matte finish of a lot of the trim on our truck here. You'll receive two running boards with your kit, one for your driver's side and one for the passenger side and all of the mounting brackets and hardware comes included with it to get it installed. These are slightly harder than some of the other nerf bars out there, but your F-150 has studs for all your brackets.

So even though it's a little bit more than the others, it's still not a very difficult install. You could easily have both of these on in less than an hour. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's go over the installation together. So you can have the confidence to do it at home. We'll begin our installation by preparing all of our brackets. You'll have six brackets like this. They don't all look exactly identical like this. The ear here might be a little longer, but they're all going to have the center tab here in the middle. We'll take our universal plate. And the angled edge here is going to sit on top of this edge, where that centerpiece is. We'll line the square hole up with the round hole. We'll take the carriage bolt that comes included with our kit. Slide it through the outside of our bracket. And on the backside we'll loosely secure it for now with a washer lock, washer and nut. We'll have a total of six of these prepared when we're done. Now that we've got all of our brackets prepared, we can come underneath the vehicle where we're going to install them on the studs.I've got each bracket laid out in the position that it's going to be going in. So you can see what they're going to look like. Our back one here on the driver's side, it's going to have the tab facing towards the rear and it's going to be a shorter tab. Same with our middle bracket. And our front back is going to be similar, but the tab is going to face towards the front of the vehicle. We're now underneath the vehicle. We're on the driver's side, behind the front tire. There is a set of studs just behind the tire, we won't be using those, we want the three studs just behind that. You'll have another set of three studs like this, just to the rear for the middle and then again at the back for the rear bracket. Each of these studs on both the driver and passenger side, we're going to place the plastic washers on them first. And this is just to help protect against corrosion due to dissimilar metals. And these just press in place. Once you've got them all pressed on and we can then take our brackets and put those in place. The holes in our brackets will line up with the studs, so it just simply slides on there. And then on each stud, we're going to place a flat washer, lock washer and nut. Once we get all the hardware loosely installed on this bracket, we're just going to follow this rearward and do the same thing for our middle and rear brackets. Where we are on the passenger side, I've already got this one installed, but you can see on the passenger side that our front bracket is going to point towards the rear at the top. If we go to the middle, it's going to point towards the front, but you can see that it's significantly longer than the brackets that we've looked at previously. And your middle bracket still has this L-shape here, where it juts out of the truck. And then if we go to our rear bracket on the passenger side, we can see it straight here, but it has the long edge pointing towards the front at the top there. We can now put our running board in place, but to make it easier, we're going to prep all the hardware. So take each bolt that comes in your kit, place a lock washer on it with a flat washer. We'll then take our running board and we needed to determine which running board going to go on which side. And the easiest way to do that is just to kind of set it down under the truck here, flip it over. And there's going to be pre-threaded holes in our running board and we want to see that they line up with our brackets. And an easy way to know got the right side is our front two mounting holes on our running board are going to be closer together, than the rear hole. These ones are this close together, and our rear holes are way back there, but they line up with our bracket. So we know we've got the driver's side and everything's going to line up. We'll then lift it up and we want to start by hooking the bottom of the brackets into the slot where our mounting holes are. And then we rotate the assembly up and over, and we can secure it with the hardware that we prepared on the other side. We're just going to go through the slotted holes in our brackets and thread it right into the running board. We're going to repeat that for the other hole here. We started with our middle bracket just to hold it up and makes things a little easier on us. And once we get both of these installed, we're going to install the hardware in our front and our rear bracket in the same way. We can now go back and tighten down our hardware. We're going to start by tightening the brackets to the vehicle first. And then we'll go back and tighten down the running boards to the brackets. We're going to use a 13 millimeter socket to tighten down our hardware. With our brackets tightened down, we're going to go back and tighten down our running boards. We can then go back and torque all of our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions. With everything tightened and torqued on this side, we can repeat the exact same process on the opposite side to get it installed. And that completes our installation of Westin's HDX Running Boards on our 2019 Ford F-150.

Excellent product , easy installation with instructions provided. Separate the left and right side parts , start with driver side which is shown in the instruction photos, then the passenger side will be easy. The product is sturdy when assembled and provides a good height to step into and out of the vehicle.

Ordered these in spring of 2021. By fall they were already starting to rust on the treads. By the next spring (1 year after install) there was significant rust on the treads, espousing the drivers as it got the most action. I’m now at a little over two years and all the treads are rusted as well as significant rusting on the corners and edges. These do not hold up well at all.

Many other reviewers mentioned this early rusting as well. One response from etrailer mentioned contacting customer service as these would be under warranty. I contacted customer service today and was told rust is not covered.

by:

The Westin nerf bars are already rusting. This is not what I expected at all. The bad part is that I talked my brother into buying all of his equipment from etrailer also.

by:

Bob and the team at e-trailer were 5 star. The ease of the transaction, shipping pricing to Hawaii and the Lightning fast delivery. Nerf bars are installed and look amazing.

As recommended in another review, the night I received the bars I opened the packages, matched up all the parts (brackets, bolts, washers, etc.) and made several piles for the mounting project. The Westin instructions are not easy to follow, referencing back and forth to various pictures and figures. Fortunately I watched an install video on their website for a similar set of bars on a similar vehicle to get a better idea of what the instructions were trying to say - like what is a rivcert and how does it work.

The actual mounting of the brackets went fairly smoothly until I went to hang the first bar and discovered I had swapped the rear bracket between driver and passenger side. The instructions showed a difference between the front, mid and rear brackets, but not that there was also a distinct left/right to the rear ones. Once that was solved, installing the second bar went quickly.

Overall the product looks great on my Ram 1500 and seems pretty sturdy. My wife and kids like the nice wide steps to get up and into the truck.

by:

I'm 6'4" tall, but still could not easily get in or out of this stock Ram 2500. These solved the problem completely. I chose them for the different look, and the complete wheel to wheel protection. I also weigh 250 pounds, and these feel very sturdy.
I can think of very few cons, but one would be the decreased ability to hand wash/wax the bottom of your body panels after these are installed, and the other would be the obvious reduction of ground clearance.
Overall, I'm very satisfied.

I have a Jeep Wrangler and the Weston HEX step bar works great. I was hard for my wife to get in my old truck, but this step bar makes it easy for her in our new Jeep. It also has a non slip strip made out of steel not a glued on one, perfect!
Thanks

by:

Installed the steps today. So happy I got this step, ample room for your foot on a nonslip surface. Just the right amount of drop. They look great. Installed on 2021 Toyota Tundra Double Cab

I am glad I got the stainless steel steps, as the powder coat flaked in a couple places while installing bolts.

As others have said, the instructions are terrible. Attach the brackets to the step first, with the bolts just finger tight. Then hang the step on the truck with the bolts finger tight. Cycle through the bolts a few times tightening incrementally, then torque them.

by:

Easy install. I actually installed on a 2012 4Runner, then decided to sell it, so I took them off and installed them on a 2018 4Runner. Fit was perfect, no issues. I might add, the 2012 model comes standard with the rocker skirts. I took them off to install these.

by:

Great look. Right height. This is my second truck I have installed these on.

by:

Easy to install and built well

by:

The nerf bars are a nice addition to the look of the 2018 4Runner. I needed them for my wife to enter and exit easier.
I wanted to put on sliders but they would not have provided the lower step access needed.

by:

Easy to install only needed help to I hold up one end to get a bolt started then I was on my own again.

by:

Easy to install. Looks great!

by:

Just installed these last night and snapped a mount bolt using a 3/8" drive ratchet. I was much more careful when tightening the remaining bolts but the hardware is definitely sub-par. Installation was easy, the bars look good and are solid however I imagine they will require paint every couple of years to control rust. For the price I believe there are better options out there.

by:

Nice product. Install took longer that necessary due to a misaligned screw hole that had to be filed . Excellent communication. Answered my emails almost as soon as I sent them. They look amazing.

by:

Bought these for my 2018 Tacoma - needed a little step up and help with protection of the rocker panel - as well as dealing with the frustration of mud & dust always coating inside door. These solved all 3 nicely. They are sturdy, well built, and very easy to install.
At least on my truck - only had to find pre-drilled holes and insert brackets. Found it easier to install bars attached to brackets then try to get bar on brackets after they were installed on truck.
Great price - cheaper than anywhere else - and free shipping!!

by:

these Nerf bars are super easy to install and look wicked cool. We really jumped on to make sure they had no movement and they did not!

Westin typically makes a solid product.

by:

nice product and easy to install fast s hipping

by:

The instructions are not all that great. Pictures help. But it would be best to have the picture showing the driver's side have a note that says the view is from under the truck. Also, the steps themselves were miss marked for which side went where. A clearer mark on the package would help. It looked like 77D or 77P.
Installation was good once I figured out which way I needed to look at the brackets to install them.

by:

The bars are exactly what I wanted and mount well.

My one gripe is that the powder coat was covering the threads at the mount point of the bars. After spending an hour trying to follow the instructions I had to disassemble the system to clean out the threads. After that it went in as written.

by:

E trailer is a awesome company to work with, they go up and above to help you out.. so glad we had the chance to work with them

by:

I like the steps, only issue is the color faded very quickly and I am now probably going to have to take them off and get them line-xed.

by:

Great customer service

by:

Easy install but drilling was required for the extended section although it did say no drilling required
