CU850012 Come Up DV Series

The DV-12s Light lets you pull a stuck vehicle out of mud, snow, or water and up a steep incline. The winch is designed with a smaller motor and drum when compared with recovery winches that have similar line pulls. This allows you to install the winch on a vehicle with limited mounting space - such as a rock crawler or Jeep - without sacrificing pulling power. The power unit can be remotely mounted, and the clutch handle can be rotated so the winch fits easily into tight spaces. It has a sealed contactor, a clutch that shifts easily from free-spool to engaged, and a load-holding brake that prevents unintentional rope payout. It includes a waterproof, hand-held remote with 17' lead so you can operate it at a safe distance. It also has a built-in overheat sensor that triggers an audible alarm in the power unit if the motor exceeds 212 degrees.

Heavy-Duty, 4.6-Horsepower Motor

DV Series Motor

The DV-12s Light features a 4.6-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 12,000 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. It's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the die-cast aluminum housing, steel drum, carbon steel motor tube, copper battery terminals, and carbon- and stainless steel hardware.

Built-In Overheat Sensor

There is a built-in sensor located inside the motor housing that monitors the motor temperature. If the motor exceeds 212 degrees, an audible alarm in the power unit sounds and an LED on the remote glows red. The alarm will turn off when power to the winch has been shut down, and the LED will turn green when the motor has cooled and can be used again.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

DV Series Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 400-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed for submersion in water or mud. The copper terminals and stainless steel and carbon steel hardware are corrosion resistant, and the motor leads have rubber boots for water resistance. The cables are color coded and printed with the AWG for easy installation. For convenience - or to better fit in a tight space - the power unit can be removed and mounted remotely with an extended wiring kit (sold separately).

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

DV Series Free-Spooling Clutch with rotating ring gear

The DV-12s Light has a free-spool clutch with a rotating ring gear that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull and turn the spring-loaded handle. To reengage the clutch, lift and rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a hardened-steel, 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The gearbox can be rotated in 36-degree increments so you can reposition the clutch handle to an easy-to-reach location. This is great when mounting foot-forward on custom and in-bumper applications or on a vehicle with a small engine where space is extremely limited.

The rustproof, die-cast aluminum gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a gray powder coat finish for corrosion resistance.

Automatic, Load-Holding Cone Brake Structure

DV Series Cone Brake

The automatic CBS (Cone Brake Structure) holds 100 percent of the load without unintentional rope payout (or creep). It has a cone-shaped wheel that presses against the brake clamp when there is a load on the rope. The greater the load on the rope the harder the cone-shaped wheel presses against the clamp. This pressure creates enough friction to slow and ultimately stop the drum's rotation.

The cone brake is located on the outside of the drum so the heat created from friction is kept away from the motor and the rope. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Hand-Held Remote with LED

DV Series Hand-Held Remote

A hand-held remote with a 17' lead and In/Out rocker switch lets you control the winch from a safe distance. The remote is constructed of durable plastic, and it's sealed and waterproof so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. It has a built-in LED that turns green when you are powering the rope in or out, turns red to indicate an overheated motor, and turns off when the winch is inactive.

Remote plugged into power unit

There is a rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit that houses the attachment port for the remote control. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it. The plug prevents water from getting into the unit when you are not using the wired remote.

Synthetic Rope

Come Up Synthetic Rope

The synthetic rope is made of 12-strand Dyneema SK75 fiber that is lightweight yet stronger than steel. This synthetic rope is safer to use than a steel rope because it generates less kinetic energy - and therefore less kickback - if a break occurs. It won't stretch - or creep - over time like steel rope can. It's also less likely to fray and create sharp strands so it's easier to handle and easier to spool.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A 6', woven-polyester protective sleeve at the hook end of the rope provides extra protection for your hands. A hand-saver strap is also included to use in conjunction with leather work gloves (CU881558 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook.

Red Hook

The removable red hook is made of high-strength forged steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.

Aluminum Hawse Fairlead

Come Up Hawse Fairlead

The cast aluminum hawse fairlead is designed to be used with synthetic rope. The 11/16" thick fairlead has a black powder coat finish that resists corrosion, and it installs with stainless steel hardware. The fairlead hole is rounded to reduce friction on the rope when you're pulling it in and out. This helps reduce wear on the rope and keep it strong and functional.

Note: The hawse fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate (sold separately) or grille guard (sold separately). ComeUp mounting channels and most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

DV Series Winch Body

The DV-12s Light is constructed of strong, durable materials that perform no matter the weather conditions or terrain. The motor and gearbox housing are constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight die-cast aluminum. The contactor is sealed to keep water out, and the lightweight, plastic power unit is ideal for mounting in remote locations. The steel tie-bars and side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

Note: This winch can only be installed foot-forward.

Use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (CU881076 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer12,00021.5
2nd Layer10,06047.2
3rd Layer8,65977
4th Layer7,601110.9
5th Layer6,774125

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 12,000-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 8,000 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface120,000
5 (3°)80,040
10 (6°)60,240
20 (11°)40,800
30 (17°)31,320
50 (26°)22,320
70 (35°)18,360
100 (45°)15,480
rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (CU881082 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (CU881091 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (CU881092 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the 8-piece rigging kit (CU882068- sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for ComeUp Electric Winch - Truck Winch - CU850112 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number CU850112. This is the come up DV12S light winch with a synthetic rope. This winch is a great self recovery winch, specifically designed for off roaders who have heavy loading requirements. It's going to feature a nice compact size, lightweight and low profile design for how powerful it is. The winch is going to have a single line pull rating of 12,000 pounds. It's going to come with your heavy duty sealed contactor. It's going to have silver alloy contact pads and thick copper bust bars and submersible construction to ensure weather resistance. We're also going to have the heavy duty series wound loader that's going to deliver superior torque output as well as faster line speed.

Then it's going to have the clutch system and braking system on this side of the winch. The brake system is an automatic full load CBS system. CBS stands for Cone Brake Structure. The braking mechanism is mounted outside the drum, rather than inside the drum, and this is going to help disperse heat quicker and more effectively. The winch is going to feature a touch aluminum diecast housing with a steel drum.

It's going to come with your industrial grade waterproof remote control. This is going to feature a thermal metric LED indicator on the switch. It's going to automatically alert you when the motor is on the verge of overheating. That's going to be connected to about 17 feet of cord, so that's going to allow you to allow you to control the winch from a safe distance. The toggle switch is very easy to use, you've got the finger indentations here on the back and then you've got the sidewalls to protect the toggle switch and you've got the wrist strap. The plug on the cord is going to run to the plug on the top of the black box.

That's going to have a nice weather resistant dust cap to protect from the elements when nothing's connected. Coming out of the black box you're going to have all of your wires. Some of the wires out of the black box are going to run to the posts here on the motor side and then the other ones are going to need to be grounded and you're going to have your red wire for your positive connection on the battery, and you're going to have your black wire that needs to be connected. That's going to run to the negative post on the battery. Again, the motor is a nice heavy duty motor. It's going to feature 4.6 horsepower, 12 volt series wound motor.

Again, we're going to have the 12,000 rated single line pull. At max load the winch is going to have a line speed of 3.3 feet per minute with a power drawl of 350 amps at 12 volts. With no load it's going to have a line speed of 26.2 feet per minute, with a power drawl of 50 amps at 12 volts. On this side is going to be our clutch. We're going to have ergonomic free handle. This is going to engage the free spool clutch through multiple evenly spaced locking holes. Right now it's in the engaged position. What you can do is you can pull it out and twist it and move it to a disengaged position. That's going to allow the rope to go into free spool mode, so you can grab the hand saver strap, pull the rope out as far as you need to quickly and easily, and connect it to your load or to your anchor point. Another neat feature about each end of this winch is that here on the clutch, if you don't like where that handle's positioned, you can actually loosen up the hardware and you can rotate that, so you can re-position that handle. Same thing here over on the motor. If you don't like where the connection points are, you can loosen up the hardware. Be sure to follow the instructions and you can actually rotate this area to change the motor mounting direction. All the necessary wiring and hardware is included. It's very important that the winch is mounted on a flat, hard surface of the mounting channel in order to make sure that the motor drum and gearbox housing are all aligned correctly. The winch is going to feature a rugged, quiet, 3 stage planetary gear system for a mechanical advantage. It's going to feature a gear ratio of 211:1. It's going to come with your aluminum Hawse fairlead, your synthetic rope runs through there. Aluminum is going to feature a nice rounded construction, so as that rope goes out or comes back in it's going to move side to side. This Hawse fairlead is going to make sure that it reduces the amount of friction that's applied to the rope and that overall it's going to extend the life of the rope. It's going to reduce the amount of wear and tear. The drum size is going to be 2.5 inches in diameter by 8.9 inches in length. It's going to feature the SK-75 synthetic rope. It's going to measure 7/16 of an inch in diameter by 82 feet long. A nice heavy duty rope. It's also going to come with your forged steel hook that's attached to it. That's going to be held on there with your pin and clip and it's got the nice large spring loaded safety latch mechanism to prevent accidental disconnecting. And you're going to get the hand-saver strap. Now on the bottom side there's going to be 4 bolts. That's going to be how this attaches. They're going to be in line with these areas right here, so from the center of the bolt hole on this side, to the center of the bolt hole on this side, going across like this, it's going to be 10 inch separation. Front to back is going to be a 4.5 inch separation. The winch itself is going to weigh around 66 pounds, that's with the rope on there. It's going to measure 24.1 inches long by 6.4 inches wide front to back, and then from bottom to top, if you had this rotated with the handle up top, that would measure 7.1 inches. Now this box is not included in that overall height measurement because it can be mounted a couple different ways. You can use the clamps and mount it to the motor housing like I have done for our video today, or you can use some of the different hardware. So where these clamps are going over, there's actually going to be a hole on each side so you can use the shorter bolts and get it attached to a mounting surface that way. Or you can use this other set of hardware and there's going to be 2 tracks right here on the back that run the full length. You can slide the hardware in those tracks and you can mount that box that way as well. So 3 different mounting options and it comes with all the hardware to mount in either one of those positions, you choose whatever one works best for your application. That's going to do it for today's look at part number CU850112.

Winch was very easy to install.Winch was used for my 20 foot Maritime Skiff. Pulls the boat up on a trailer with no problem at all. Very pleased with the product

by:

It came on time and was packaged great. I am using the winch to load my race cars into my enclosed trailer. It is working very well. It is slow enough to make loading safe but fast enough to not take all day. I am very pleased.

by:

This has been a great winch. We use it hard almost every day loading portable buildings. My only issues 1) I was led to believe it came with a remote control, it didn't 2) the hard wired control is giving us problems starting and stopping the winch.

by:

This winch worked better than I thought it would. Mounted in a car trailer. The remote makes it very easy to control the winch and steer the vehicle.

by:

Has worked perfectly. No issues after pulling my track cars onto my trailer around 75 times. I do notice fraying of the rope... Will probably need replacement pretty soon. Without the rope fray I would give it 5 stars.
