Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143185 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. This product fits certain years of the Honda Civic. You can always use the vehicle fit guide located at etrailer.com to ensure this is a fit for your vehicle. It's going to provide a 4-way flat connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. This is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters. Adapters are sold separately, and it's going to come with a dust cap for the 4-way flat connector.

That way, you can cover up the connection points when your plug's not being used. The black box is the included taillight converter. This ensures that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. The power module connects directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. Now, this unit's designed to connect quickly and easily. It does come with detailed installation instructions to walk you through the entire process step by step.

Now, basically, what you'll need to do is locate your connection point in the rear cargo area and plug in your connector. Now, the plugs on this harness are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle, and they're going to snap lock together for a nice, tight, secure fit. Once you have that done, you'll need to make your ground connection. Ground wire's your white wire, has a ring terminal pre-attached to it. You want to get that grounded to a suitable grounding location using the included grounding screw, and then you can mount your converter box to an out of the way location using the included cable ties.

There's going to be a mount located on each side for easy mounting. Then, you'll need to run the hot lead to the vehicle battery. Hot lead's the red wire with a butt connector attached to it. You want to get that connected to one end of the bundle of wiring. The other end of the bundle runs all the way up to the vehicle battery, connects to one half of the fuse holder here at the butt connector. The other half of the fuse holder has a ring terminal on it.

That gets connected to the positive post of the vehicle battery, and it's going to come with your 15 amp fuse. Goes directly in the fuse holder, and it's got the cap that goes over to keep it safe and protected. Then, you can go ahead and secure any excess or slack in the wiring with the remaining cable ties. Once your installation's complete, the 4-way connector's going to be stowed in your rear cargo area. Plenty of wiring here. That way, you can extend it out the back when you need to use it and tuck it away when you don't need to use it. It is recommended that you use a small amount of terminal grease on all electrical connections, like the plugs on the vehicle and the 4-pole connector itself. The grease is designed to help prevent corrosion, and the grease packet is included with the kit. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at 3 amps per circuit, and for the taillights, it's 6 amps per circuit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector.

  • Comparing Vehicle Wiring Harnesses For 2012 Honda Civic
There is not much of a difference, with the only difference being that the # HM11143185 you were looking at will pull power directly from the battery of your 2012 Honda Civic so you will not need to worry about damaging your factory wiring, but will require you to run that wire yourself. I recommend going with the # HM11143175 if your Civic is a coupe, or # 118420 if your Civic is a sedan as these options do not require you to run the power wire to the battery meaning they will be quite...
