Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2008 Chrysler Aspen

Today on this 2008 Chrysler Aspen, we're going to install part number c55597 from Curt. This is the Curt T connecter Wiring Harness. First thing we need to do is go ahead and open up the back hatch and get access behind the tail lights. There are two plastic rivets on each tail light that we have to remove so we can take off the tail light. We pull off the center with a pair of pliers, and they come right out. Then set the fasteners off to the side and we'll go ahead and pop the tail light loose. Next we need to disconnect the wire harness.

There's a small red lock on the inside that we have to release first, and then we can go ahead and push down on a tab to pull it away from the tail light. Were done with our drivers side, we'll go ahead and repeat for the passengers side. Next we can go ahead and start installing our T connector. We'll take our four pole run it through the opening behind a bumper cover and below a tail light on the drivers side. We'll take the wire box and run it down below as well. We'll also take the T connector with the green wire and do the same thing.

Now the T connector with the yellow wire we'll keep up towards the top, and then we'll plug that into the factory wire harness. Next we'll go ahead and run our T connector with the green wire, across to the other side and up in to the passenger tail light. We'll run it up into place and make our connections to the factory wire harness there. At this point we can go ahead and just reinstall the tail lights, and then we'll take our power wire and add that on. Our power wire is the large bundle wire that comes with the kit. We'll add a but 00:01:50 connector to it from the kit.

Well connect that to the black wire on the wire box, and then go ahead and tape our connect to seal it up. We'll leave that wire alone for now, and we'll go ahead and mount the wire box to some sheet metal behind the fender. We'll clean off some sheet metal, and we'll also clean off the wire box. We'll put the adhesive on one side and then attach it to the sheet metal. At this point we'll go ahead and secure the rest of our wires, to make sure theyre bundled up nice and neat and out of the way. Now we'll also take our four-pole wire harness and route that towards the center of the hitch, but what we're going to do is use the zip ties and secure the green wire going across. We want to make sure we stay up away from the exhaust as well, so we have something to attach the wire to.

Now we'll continue on with our black wire. We have to run that up to the battery. In this case inaudible 00:02:51 wire, most of the wire through the frame, up through the engine compartment. We went ahead and pulled the wire up towards the fuse box. We also drilled a hole to secure our wire with the zip tie. Then we ran our wire to the battery lead-in to our fuse box. We cut our wire to length. Next we'll take our fuse holder, ad it. We'll connect the but 00:03:21 connector through the power wire, that I ran from the rear. One end of the fuse holder will connect to a black wire, and the other end will get the ring terminal. Then go ahead and tape our connector to seal it off. We'll go ahead and connect it to the lead-in in our fuse box. We'll take off one of the nuts, put our ring terminal in place and then fasten the nut once more. Then we can go ahead and add our fuse to fuse holder. At this point we can go ahead close the lid for a fuse panel. It's a good idea to zip tie any additional wires that may need some attention. Then we'll go ahead and try out our wire harness with the light tester first, before trying it on a trailer. We'll take our ground lead from our tester and attach it to the white wire. Next we'll go ahead and test the brown wire for our running light signal. Then the yellow wire for our left turn signal, and green for our right turn signal. Our brake signal will be a solid green and yellow. When everything checks out then we can go ahead and try it on a trailer. With that, that will finish it for our install, part number c55597, from Curt, on this 2008 Chrysler, Aspen. .

Super easy install!
2 sided tape for
power box isn't the best idea so I ty-wrapped up out of the way of dirt and heat above the spare tire. I suggest heat shrink tubing for all connections rather than electrical tape. And use a proper crimping tool, NOT pliers! Harness was installed in less than 15 minutes but fishing the power line to the battery thru the drivers side frame, was a bit of a challenge and took about 30 minutes with 2 people and a fish tape.

Product arrived quickly and was exactly as pictured. The only issue with this product was that the black wire, for connecting the vehicle's battery to the power prong of a 7-pin trailer connector, was too short. I needed about 2 to 3 feet of extra wire on my 2008 Dodge Durango.

by:

This is one of the easiest wiring system I have put on, instructions were good and all the hook ups was easy. I would recommend this product to others.

Good - It all worked.
BUT - an extra
6 - 10" of wiring to the battery would be nice. I had to add on.

I have confirmed with the manufacturer for you that the correct fit for a Curt wiring harness for your 2008 Dodge Durango without the factory tow package is the T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55597. • Replacement Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2008 Chrysler Aspen
Sounds like you have a shorted out trailer taillight converter. Any time we see one of the pins of a connector show voltage all of the time that indicates that box has shorted out most likely due to a short on the trailers wiring. Curt harnesses like the one you have part # C55597 are notoriously easier to short out than other brands. So what I would recommend you do is find and fix any short on your trailer's wiring and then install a # 118390 in place of it and you'll be good to go.
