Hi everybody. My name is Andy with etrailer.com. And today we're taking a look at Coghlan's camping hatchet with nylon sheath. Now, this hatchet or any hatchet is a wonderful tool to have, whether you're at your campsite, preparing firewood for your campfire, or even to use around your home in your yard to take care of some tasks in your yard. It's a great tool to have whether you're chopping up wood or when you're at your campsite and you need to hammer in some 10 stakes into the ground, you can use the back of your hatchet to perform that task for you. Now, this particular hatchet from Coghlan does have very nice rubberized grips, and this will not only reduce the impact to your hand into your wrist when you're actually using this hatchet, but it does indeed provide a nice, comfortable and secure grip.
This does have a full tank construction, so it is running all the way through this rubberized grip. So again, it's a nice sure hold when you are using this hatchet. And as you can see, the rubberized grip is red and black, predominantly red to increase visibility. Or when you lay this aside, it will not blend into the surroundings so you can easily find it when you lay this down. Now, this does include a nylon sheath that I have here on my belt, and I'm going to give you a closeup of it.
Let me zoom in here a little bit and show you how this works. Now I am wearing just a typical men's black leather belt. This sheath has a belt loop behind it, the loop is probably made more for a rugged belt, probably not necessarily this leather belt in mind. But I just kind of want to show you how this is supposed to work. This has a hook and loop fastener here, and then a top snap, and that will give you ample opening to slide this hatchet in.
I do want to state that this sheath is simply kind of a stiff felt on the inside. There's there's no plastic reinforcement. It's just a stiff felt from what I can feel, nylon on the outside. And so you just carefully slide in the head of the hatchet into the sheath. And I just start by securing the hook and loop fastener, and then using the top snap.
And on this belt, it doesn't seem to work too well. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of this sheath. I think it's good for protecting the blade when you're not using it, protecting yourself when you're not using it, maybe throwing it into pack or something like that. But I don't feel very confident using this on my belt specifically because the hook and loop fastener here can easily come undone and that hatchet would slip right out. So if you would hit a tree or something while you we're out in the woods, this could easily come open and I could see that hatchet slipping right out. So my recommendation is not to use this on your belt, use it simply to store your hatchet. And I think that would be a good option that way. Now, the overall length of this hatchet diagonally from the handle tip to the edge of the blade here, about diagonal, is sitting right at about 14 inches long. And just the blade across is sitting right at about three and one eighth inches. And speaking of the blade, I mean, it's relatively sharp, but you would probably want to sharpen that yourself to give it a little bit more of an edge when you're ready to use it. The head is five inches across, and then just the handle length is sitting right at about seven inches long. And this does weigh a little over two pounds, about 2.2 pounds. And again, that's quite a bit of weight to be hanging off of your belt on your, on the waistband of whatever pants that you would be wearing. So this is again a 14 inch long hatchet. If you're looking for something a little bit on the smaller side, Coghlan does have a 13 inch long camping ax with a nail puller. And actually I believe that nail puller is right about here. And then even if you want to go even smaller, Coghlan does have a 10 inch long camping ax that comes with the sheath somewhat similar to the one that comes with this hatchet. Well, I believe that concludes our look today at Coghlan's camping hatchet with nylon sheath. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me..
