Shane: Hey everyone, Shane here with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at and I'm going to walk through how to install the JIF Marine aluminum dock ladder. This ladder is going to be great to add anywhere on your dock to allow anyone who may be swimming in the water, easily to get out back onto the dock. Now, this is a retractable ladder and you're going to notice some wires hanging off here. And this is so we don't have to bend down to grab our ladder, we can simply grab onto the wires and pull a ladder up out of the water. This is as low as we can get it right now because we're actually in shallow water, but this will actually go down to where this rung is, so it's going to go all the way down.

It gives you four rungs, then when we are wanting to store it, simply, we're going to pull it up like this and it'll rest out of the water just like that until we need to use it the next time. Now you might be asking yourself, why are we putting a ladder on a dock that's in shallow water Well, our customer is actually going to put another eight-foot section on here, and this is actually going to be out there where the water is 15-foot deep. And that's why they're adding on the ladder now. The ladder, as I mentioned is aluminum construction, so it's going to hold up in all weather conditions. So we don't have to worry about rust and corrosion. Also, being able to retract it out of the water, we're not going to have to worry about algae building up on the steps, making them slick like you would some of those other ladders.

That when you put them on, they're actually down in the water and they have to stay there. This is going to be a permanent mount so again, make sure you decide where you're going to put it on your dock because it is going to have to be bolted down through the wood. Each one of our rungs is going to have a tread on it that gives us nice grip getting in and out of the water. You'll notice all the welds are very nice and smooth so being barefooted, we don't have to worry about catching our feet or toes on any sharp edges. Now that we've gone over some of the details, let's go ahead and show you how to get it installed. To start our installation, your steps are not going to come with the hardware. You're going to take your top arms here, this piece, you want to make sure that these are facing out.

On the front side of it, it's going to have a hole that runs all the way through. It's got a concave edge to it, so what we're doing is we're using three inch Phillips head screws. So when we slide them in, they'll sit flush. So we're going to install our arm first, or our top section. You're going to take this end and we're going to slide it in.

And we're going to line up the two holes, turn that through. On the backside, I'm going to put a washer and then a locknut. And we'll tighten those down. Now, depending on where you want to set it, this is a new Cedar deck, but our customer is wanting a support underneath. So what we did is we cut a couple of small two by fours, ran a couple of screws in to hold it up in place. So when we run our lag bolts down through, it goes through the two by four and gives it plenty of support. But you also notice this trim piece here, and it's holding that edge out. What I'm going to do, I'm going to slide this all the way over, up against it, mark it. I'm going to cut this edge off and then I'll remove this piece, we'll slide our ladder back over. I'll but it up against that edge and then I can take this piece. And move it over, and it'll be right here on the top side of the ladder against the deck. Now you'll notice that our letter is not going back far enough, so what we're going to do is we're going to trim these off to get our ladder back as far as we can get it. Next thing we need to do is we need to get these wires off our steps through the top holes and secure them before we've bolted it down to the deck. We're going to be using some wire rope clips and you can find these at your local hardware store. And we'll just feed the rope through and then tighten it down. And that'll secure it in the bottom. On one end of your ladder, there's a tab and take it like this. And we're going to feed the other end in like that and then we take our steps. And lock them like this, that'll hold them in place. And take our cables and put them through like that. And we're going to loosen the two nuts on the bottom and we'll feed our wire through here. And then we'll tighten those down. Once you get one done, you're going to repeat the process for the other one.So now we're going to do is we're going to attach our steps to our decking. Attaching it on the side here, the deck actually overhangs so the two by six that runs straight down from here. Or two by 12, I'm going to try and get this centered on that, drill a pilot hole, and then I'm going to put in a long lag bolt like this, or a big deck bolt. And then the back ones, we're actually going to use nut and bolt, I'm going to go all the way down through the two by four, or through the support that I have down there. And I'll put a nut and a washer on the backside of it. So we'll go ahead and start with these front ones, that'll get this held in place. Once you have your ladder tightened down, we can take our piece that we trimmed right in the middle there, and reattach it. Once you have your ladder secured your dock, you're ready to. That's going to do it for the look at and installation on the JIF Marine aluminum dock ladder.
