Parts Needed To Add Electric Trailer Brakes To Rockwell American 3500lb Axle On 5 x 10 Tear Camper

Question:

Will this electric brake kit assembly fit a 60inch Rockwell American 3500 # axle? If so, what is included in the kit? e.g. drum electric brake, etc.? Plan is to install on a 5x10 tear camper using a 7 prong cable.

The Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA you were looking at are designed specifically for 3500lb trailer axles like your 60" Rockwell American Axle, but you will need to make sure that a brake mounting flange is installed on the axle.

The brake mounting flange is located right behind the idler hub/drum and will have 4 bolts as shown in the included picture.

If your axle does not have brake mounting flange you will need to have a local axle shop weld the # 4-35 on each side. This is not something you can do at home as the flange needs to be perfectly square to the axle or else it will cause uneven brake wear.

From the sounds of it your 5' x 10' tear camper does not currently have trailer brakes. If that is the case you will need a few more things.

First you will need hub and drums instead of idler hubs, of which I recommend the # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K which will fit your 3500lb axle.

Next you will need brake mounting hardware # BRKH10A to mount the brakes to the brake mounting flange.

Moving on to wiring you will need a 7-way connector and junction box in kit # HS381-9000 to make all of the wiring connections. You will need to run # 10-1-1 from each brake magnet to the junction box as well.

The last part the trailer will need is a breakaway kit # 20400 which will engage the trailer brake automatically should the trailer ever disconnect from your tow vehicle when on the road.

Now you vehicle will also need to have a 7-way connector and trailer brake controller installed to power the trailer brakes. If you do not have these components just let me know the Year/Make/Model of your tow vehicle and I would be happy to make a recommendation for you.
