A hitch extender, such as the Brophy Hitch Extender # ST18, will work with your 6,000lb boat trailer if used with a weight distribution hitch. This is because the # ST18 has a max towing capacity of 3,500lbs and tongue weight of 350lbs, but when used in combination with a weight distribution system, this extender can handle up to 7,000lbs and 700lb tongue weight.

You can look through our weight distribution hitches and find one based on your tongue weight of your trailer (which is roughly 10-15% of the total loaded weight) and add any weight that is behind the rear axle of your bed. This extender would also reduce your receiver hitch's towing capacity by 33%.

A much better solution would be to go with a longer hitch ball mount, such as the Brophy Ball Mount # BM20. It is one of the longest hitch ball mounts we offer, being 13-1/4" from the hitch pin hole to the ball. With a max towing capacity of 10,000lbs and max tongue weight of 1,000lbs, this will be enough to pull your 6,000lb boat trailer.

For a 2" ball, I would go with the # 40038 (20,000lbs) and for a 2-5/16" I would go with # C40007 (10,000lbs).
