Using 2 Inch Receiver For a Bike Rack Versus Using a 1-1/4 to 2 Inch Receiver Adapter
Question:
I already have a bike hitch that fits a 2inch receiver. Couldnt I get the 1-1/4inch to 2inch hitch adaptor and then just purchase the Curt receiver hitch which fits 1-1/4? It would save me quite a bit. Would the hitch have any less support with an adaptor? Its only going to be used for 1 or 2 bicycles. Usually just one bicycle.

The problem with using an adapter is that it will lower the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50%, and also, because there will be an intermediate piece installed in between the receiver hitch and the hitch mounted bike rack, you're going to have more bounce and movement in your bike rack. Additionally, if you're using hitch locks, you'll need a
You would certainly save some money by going with the Curt Class II # C12091 hitch over the # 306-X7239 EcoHitch, but you'll need to purchase an adapter like # C45785 which will erode a good deal of those price savings.
I'm not super-fond of using hitch adapters, so if it were me personally I'd simply go with the # 306-X7239 and avoid using an adapter all together.
I've linked to installation videos for both hitches.
