Trailer Hitch to Carry Motorcycle for 1989 Collins/E-350 School Bus

Question:

Hello, I was wondering if you could give me a hitch recommendation for my vehicle. I would imagine that it would require the same hitch attachment as similar ford motorhomes built on the ford e-350, but I cannot find any information on what that would be. I am assuming it would be one of the universal hitches that you sell for RVs. If there is a better option I would be interested in hearing it. The distance between the rails is 40 and 7/8ths inches. I have attached a picture of one of the rails. If more measurements or photos are required I would be happy to take them. I do not plan on doing any towing but would like to carry a 270lb motorcycle on a rack. Thanks for your assistance.

It's tough to tell from your picture which part of the frame I'm looking at, so if you can provide me with some more information on if that is a picture of the rear of the bus and those points on the frame are where you're mounting, I can give you an answer with 100% certainty. The Draw-Tite Multi-Fit Motor-home Trailer Hitch # 5350 will fit as long as there is 5-1/2" of height inside the frame to mount the bracket into. The one thing that worries me with the Draw-Tite hitch is that there is not a drop on the hitch receiver, so I believe you're really going to struggle to access the receiver once mounted.

Because of that, I recommend you go with the Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch # C13701 , which will give you a 2" drop from the receiver tube and allow you to carry 500-lbs of tongue weight- which should be more than enough for your 270-lb motorcycle and the weight of the carrier. This hitch is a universal hitch that has a 2" receiver opening and allows for bolt-on application to box frame, C channel frame, or I beam frames. You'll also want to make sure that your cargo carrier is rated for use on a motor home, since there is typically a bit more play/shaking at the back side of a motor-home.
