I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, it has the plug for the brake controller, but i have a 4 way plug at the back of the truck. Where do i pick up the hot brake wire after the plug?

As your Ram is not equipped with the 7-way connector, the brake output and 12-volt accessory circuits are not ran to the rear of the truck.

You will first need a 4-pole to 7-way adapter like part # 37185 that will plug into your existing 4-pole. You will need to run a length of 10 gauge wire from the blue lead of the adapter under the vehicle to the engine compartment. Make sure to avoid any moving parts like the suspension and steering components and anything hot like the exhaust. In the engine compartment behind the drivers side wheel well, there is an electrical connector (see photo). Look for a heavy gauge blue wire on the side of the connector closest to the front of the truck. You can use a scotch lock like part # SWC501915-1 to tap into the blue wire, which will complete the brake output circuit to the trailer connector.

If you need the 12-volt accessory power circuit completed, you will need to run another length of 10 gauge wire from the black lead on the 4-pole to 7-way adapter to the positive battery terminal, via a 40 amp breaker like part # 9510. We offer a jacketed 2 wire cable that is sold by the foot, part # 10-2-1 that would work perfectly.
