Hitch Adapter for Bike Rack on 2017 Volkswagen Golf

Question:

Hello. I am considering a tow hitch c11412 for my 2017 VW Golf for a Kuat sherpa 2 bike carrier. The hitch is a class I, and I was going to purchase the Curt expander for a 1.25 to 2 inch but it states it is only for a class II hitch. I am not going to tow anything and was wondering why this expander would not work? Difference in pin positions? I understand this expander will reduce the tongue weight from 200 to 100 lbs, but the carrier and 2 bikes will be under that amount limit. Thanks.

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter # C45785 does have different measurements than an adapter that is compatible with a Class I hitch, the Brophy # HTAD, as well as different capacities. For example, the Curt adapter is 6" from center of hitch pin hole to center of hitch pin hole while the Brophy is 7-1/4". The Curt is also rated for a tongue weight of 350 lbs while the Brophy is rated for 300 lbs. So the solution for you would be to use the appropriately rated Brophy # HTAD with Curt hitch # C11412. Please note that the adapter is going to require the use of 1/2" pin and clip # PC2 with a 1-1/4" receiver.

Something else you'll want to note is that the Curt hitch is going to require the use of stabilizing straps # 18050 with all non-trailer accessories such as bike racks and cargo carriers in order to maintain the warranty. I've added a link to a demonstration video which shows you how the straps are used.
