Brakes On Trailer Lock Up when Connected to a 2006 Nissan Xterra
Question:
I have a 2006 Xterra, and I just installed a Curt towing hitch and 7-pin electrics to match my pop-up. Pop-up is a 2002 Coleman Laramie, and has had electric braking since day one. I do not have a brake controller on the Xterra yet. The trailer brakes engage when I try to pull it. If I disconnect the plug between car and trailer, the brakes disengage. Is there something I can do today I cant get a controller installed today, short of clipping the wires underneath the camper that go to the brakes, to keep the brakes disengaged when plugged up to the Xterra?

I know exactly what the problem is. There were some Nissan vehicles in which the tow package wiring, that you plug into to install a 7-Way, has the electric brake output and the 12 volt circuits switched. So when you plug in your trailer the brakes are getting a constant 12 volts.
But not to worry. We have a help article, linked below, that explains how you can easily fix this problem!
If you haven't chosen a brake controller yet I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and easy to use. And it is one of the most reliable controllers available. Plug it into your 1006 Nissan Xterra using harness # 3050-P.
