Rear Bumper Needs to be Supported When Installing Curt C13176 Trailer Hitch Receiver-2016 GMC Canyon
Question:
Hi, Im very interested in purchasing this hitch for my new 2016 GMC Canyon Crew Cab, but am worried that the bumper will fall off during the removal of bolts and crossmember or hitch, which shares the same mounting points for the new hitch and should be supported from underneath. I dont have brackets/jacks that support the bumpers during removal. Im planning on doing the job myself. Bottom line, will the bumpers fall off when I remove the bolts and crossmember, if I don’t have the bumper supported from underneath?

I've looked through the installation instructions for all the hitches we offer for the 2016 GMC Canyon/Chevy Colorado. All the installation involve removing the rear impact structure (cross member). The same bolts that hold the bumper in place also secure the cross member, so the rear bumper needs to be supported with jack stands, or the bumper will fall once the last bolt is removed.
If you click the provided link, you can see a video showing the installation procedure.
If you'll be towing with the hitch (as opposed to using it as an attachment for a hitch mounted accessory), you'll need the following to complete your towing system:
Trailer wiring harness, part # HM11141164 or if your truck has the tow package, use # C55384
Ball mount, part # D-4
1-7/8 inch trailer ball # 19260 or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball
Pin and clip, part # PC3 or a locking hitch pin, part # e98882
