Trailer Hitch, Ball Mount, Hitch Ball, and Wiring Recommendations for a 2010 Subaru Forester
Question:
I need a hitch for my 2010 Subaru Forrester and my Thule Ridgeline 4-bike hitch rack. Which of your 2 hitches would you recommend for easiest installation? Thanks!

We gauge difficulty of installing a trailer hitch by how long it takes (on average for the every day do-it-yourselfer) to perform the installation. We rate each of the 2 inch hitches for the 2010 Subaru Forester a 4 out of 10, meaning it will take about 40 minutes.
All of the 2 inch hitches will require temporary lowering of the exhaust and the widening of a few holes on the frame using a drill (no new holes need to be drilled) to install the hitch. You will also need to fishwire some of the hardware into position. I have included a video of enlarging a frame hole and a video showing the fishwire technique.
With the proper tools and a helper, installation should be fairly simple. Since all of the 2 inch hitches will install relatively the same on your Forester, I recommend going with the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13147. It has a capacity of 4,000 gross trailer weight, 400 tongue weight capacity. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a video installation of the hitch below.
To complete your towing set up, I recommend ball mount # C45010 with pin and clop # PC3, and hitch ball # 19260 (1-7/8 inch diameter), # 63845 (2 inch diameter), or # 63853 (2-5/16 inch diameter). You might also be interested in trailer wiring to provide a 4-Way trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. Use Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118467. I have included a link to the installation details and a video installation below.
