Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on our 2005 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab, we're going to install part number 30955. This is a replacement multi-tow 7-way and 4-way trailer connector. We're going to replace the original 7-pole connector That came with the vehicle. This is how it came to us, so you can see that the connector has seen better days. To remove our 7-pole connector, there's a tab right here that we push down and pull out. Sometimes there may be a little gray tab or a lock that fits around this.

You just push down in the center of it and just push it out of the way, then put it back when you're done. We don't have that one, so we'll just push down on this tab and pull it apart. This is our new part that's going to replace the OEM connector. This will simply just plug right back in, like this. However, we're going to take this and route it down towards the bottom of our hitch, toward our pre-existing mounting bracket. This is the bracket that comes with the part.

However, we're going to use the pre-existing one. A good location for this if you wanted to install it, would be right here. It does come with the hardware to install the bracket. However, self-tacking screws will work best in this application here. Let's go ahead and route our wire harness down.

Before we add our new connector, we'll go ahead and put some dilectic grease on the contacts to help protect them. We're using part number 11755. Let's go ahead and route this through our bracket. We'll go ahead and make our connection. We'll just push the two together, make sure they line up OK, and squeeze them until they click. Now we'll use the hardware that comes with the kit, to attach our 7-pole to the bracket.

With our hardware loosely assembled, we'll go ahead and tighten it down, using a flat-blade screw driver. Typically, this star washer on the back will give enough grip; we don't need a wrench. If you do, a 3/8 will work just fine. We'll go ahead and route our wire harness up and out of the way, make sure it's safe and secure with some zip ties. Zip ties don't come with the kit, so you might want to go ahead and get extra long zip ties to go around the hitch. In just a few minutes we've got a new 7-pole connector plus a 4-pole connector installed on our truck. That will do it for our replacement multi-tow 7-way and 4-way trailer connector on our 2005 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab. .

etrailer had what we needed. At times it is not easy locating accessory parts on vehicles not factory installed. Easy to navigate site to find and compare the exact parts we were looking for.

by:
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Product was exactly what I was looking for and thanks to the hitch system previously purchased, it was fabricated for a perfect fit. Also, the first one that came in was busted up a little, etrailer immediately sent a new one out with no hassle. Great company.

by:

Perfect fit just plug and play good quality hitch.

by:

Perfect fit and function as usual from etrailer.

by:

Great fit works good has 7way rv plug and the regular flat 4 plug no need for adapters to lose or have stolen.

Been using this plug for a year now still working great

by:
2006 GMC Sierra

Exact fit for my 06 GMC Sierra it took longer to get my spare tire down than to install the tow package. My spare was stuck.

by:

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver was easy to install and has worked just fine in pulling my several trailers. For the price, an excellent deal. The 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Connector by Hopkins was a disappointment because the cap that doubles as a dust cover and latch to the adapter has come off and missing after a few months. This cap is not replaceable, the whole connector would have to be replaced.

by:
2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Perfect! I used this on a single cab Chevy Silverado 1500. Plugged into factory trailer lights near spare tire, mounted it up, plugged in trailer and everything worked just like it should. My truck does not have a spare tire so I removed the spare tire keyhole mount and cut some of the bumper to fit the adapter. My truck did not require a ECM/PCM flash of any kind, although I hear some vehicles may have to.

2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Product exactly what I was looking for. Fit factory harness perfectly. Strong and rigid, appropriate mounting hardware. Perfect

by:

I installed this today. Took around 90 minutes but part of that was learning how to get the spare out of the way. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the bumper because of where I wanted the connector to be placed. All necessary hardware came with the unit. This was very easy to do after watching etrailer's How To video. Good job guys, great product.

by:

Works great!!! Thanks....

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

in my case I have to say that first look at YouTube from there I got the video with the description of the process and the number of the part of there just went to etrailer.com I put the # alone went out it was really easy to send fantastic just wait 4 days in regular shipment for the installed only you see that plug it in thank you I hope that some more will serve..

by:

Nice product ,Easy to install and then worked as supposed to . I installed in bumper as opposed to the add on bracket that came with it ,made for a easier way to plug in trailer cord.

by:

Cathy T. was very good help. She set me up with the correct parts for our 2001 Chevy so we can have a 7 prong plug in at the bumper and in the box.
We got rid of the cobbled up mess that started giving us trouble and now everything works great. The plug and play took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete. We will do business again if needed. Thanks again Cathy T. and etrailer!

I bought this 7 way trailer connector to replace a broken one on my 2006 Chevy 2500HD. It was an easy install and only took a few minutes to complete. I tested it with my trailer connected and all works fine.
The shipping was super fast.
Thanks , etrailer.

by:

Easy install. Black plastic cover broke of very quickly.

Perfect fit. Could not ask for anything else.

by:

worked great thanks

by:

The product was an exact one-for-one replacement. However, I ended up having to replace the female connector due to corrosion. This took a bit of time. The result was all new connections that work fine. Thanks for all your assistance.

Great job etrailer.

by:
2007 Chevrolet Silverado

My 2007 Classic Silverado Crew Cab 4x4 did not have a factory hitch receiver, so I selected the 13322 Curt Hitch Receiver because it closely resembles the OEM hitch receiver and attaches to the bottom of the bumper. Installation was easy, as shown in the videos and described by other reviewers. All holes aligned perfectly. I did not remove the spare tire as it is not necessary. I used two jack stands to raise/support the receiver frame in place while I started the first bolts. I had the 22mm and 19mm sockets needed to tighten and torque the bolts/nuts. It looks great and I now am able to tow.

For the wiring I installed the 30955 Hopkins 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors to the bumper adjacent to the license plate. This required drilling a 2-1/8" hole in the bumper, which was time consuming, but it now resembles a factory installation. I was able to remove the license plate and connect to the factory plug.

I ordered these parts from etrailer for a number of reasons: 1) The website is intuitive and contains a tremendous amount of information for the person who is trying to research product information; 2) the selection and inventory is amazing; 3) the prices are very competitive – free shipping for orders over $99; and 4) the dedicated customer service is outstanding – the email communication is prompt. I ordered on a weekend and it was delivered by the following Friday.
A very positive first experience.

by:

Unit worked well as advertised. Old connecter had to stay (was welded) so I mounted off center a foot away. Now it protrudes 2 inches.

Peter G.

4/22/2018

I use it infrequently. When I do use it, it works well. It would not mount as per instruction because of the factory offered trail hitch assy. Looks catiwhompus but does the job.

by:

The male prongs on the plug on the wire end were too short and did not engage.
The lights would not work. I bought another brand plug that the prongs were longer on and it worked fine.

  • Installation of Tekonsha Voyager in a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500
It sounds to me as if you have a aftermarket 7-Way and 4-Way trailer connector installed on your vehicle. The Replacement Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors for Ford, GM Trucks, item # 30955, should be attached to the factory connector under the vehicle near the spare tire see link. This connection should provide all of the wiring to your trailer connector from the front of the vehicle, except for the blue brake feed wire if the connector is not factory installed. The brake controller...

Chances are the 4-way that you have is aftermarket. However, it will not make a huge difference whether or not it is factory or aftermarket. First thing I would check is to see is you have round connector present above the spare tire. If there is a plug above the spare tire, you can use the Replacement Trailer Connector for GM Trucks, item # 30955, which will plug right into the connector. If your vehicle does not have the connector there will be a bundle of wires above the spare tire....

If your truck does not have a factory 7-Way, you would need part # 30955. It is a 7-Way harness that is plug and play. We have this part used in one of our installation videos so I will provide a link to that video as well.

Typically, your truck would have been equipped with tow package wiring that would have already been converted. It sounds like somebody's come along and messed with that. You can begin by checking for the original tow package wiring. Look for a wiring harness that terminates in bare wires located above the spare tire or on the driver's side frame rail alongside the spare.
