Very nice item, very easy to install all the connectors were good quality and precrimped on the wire ends, the only thing the little plastic tab that locks the plug into the receptacle snapped off quite easily now I have to wire tie it to secure it but other than that very nice product includes everything you need for a nice clean install.

Still working a d holding up well, I would buy this again of needed .

I purchased the brake controller and wiring harness from you all and installed it watching the video on your website. I followed the instructions to an absolute T. Got everything ready and tested the product and got an SH error code for the blue brake wire shorting out. I pinned and measured resistance and everything was coming back fine (4+ ohms resistance). I then hooked a power prope to it to find the short along the frame and nothing. I had power from the female connector all the way up to the brake controller. After 4 hours of troubleshooting, I found that the female trailer connector was shorted internally. See the attached picture. The blue and green ring terminals inside of the female trailer connector were touching. Replaced the trailer connector and now all is well.

It looks like you did all the troubleshooting that we would have recommended. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you about replacing the trailer connector.

Kate M. my salesperson, had a most professional interaction with me being certain of my and my vehicle's needs. In addition, she walked me through the complete installation process. This I completed, wiring the 7-way and the Curt Discovery Controller making no errors along the way. On the first test, every terminal on the 7-way tested as it should. When we came home with the RV from the dealer, all the lights and the brakes worked flawlessly. Many thanks!!

by: John 05/09/2024

The controller works great, and applies the brakes in a study manner, depending on how hard you’re breaking and what number it’s set too. The installation was a little more difficult than I expected, but that has nothing to do with the product, but more about finding the ideal location for mounting, and still went smoothly. The finished install looks like it came from the factory, with just the adjustment knob being visible. I like how it’s always on and ready to use, but it’s only active when the trailer is hooked up. Super simple to use.

Another successful order and install from etrailer.com! Always fast shipping and excellent installation guide videos! Installed on 2021 JL Wrangler EcoDiesel.

by: David12/28/2023

Installation instructions are adequate, provided you keep the wires straight. After final install everything worked fine. The online video was a little too simplistic, and skipped frustration in finding where to put things. Final outcome was a clean install. It would have been nice to have been offered the dashboard knockout piece for the Highlander. I drilled mine out and it works

by: Michael 05/15/2024

I actually only needed one wire because I have a curt 7 pin brake controller that plugs into the back. However, I wanted a number 10 wire and chose to use this kit in case I want to hard wire a brake controller in the car later. This also allowed me the luxury of choosing to use a 30 amp breaker. Working great!

by: Sydney Shaw06/26/2023

Very easy to install! I put off installing this stealth hitch for a month dreading taking off the body panel... Just to find out it was extremely easy. The whole process took me four hours, would have been done sooner if I didn't unnecessarily take off a small battery cable that prevent the car from starting. The part of the makes me happy is the added safety from the superior strength in steel and the protruding ball to help protect from getting rear ended!

by: Larry05/24/2024

this has been a frustrating endevor trying to get parts together to install Tow pro brake controller got the Red Arc Controller and wire package for rear of vehicle controller and no wire harness to get out of the controller bummer orfer more parts i guess

I have a 2018 BMW X2 that did not come with a factory tow package. I had an etrailer hitch and 4 way plug installed last year and has been perfect since. I just recently purchased a camper and needed to have a Brake controller & Brake controller 7 way deluxe kit installed. My mechanic installed them with the detailed instructions that the units came with without any issues. The Tekonsha P3 is extremely user friendly and is working flawlessly. A bit overkill for my car being I can only tow max 3500 pounds, and my camper is 1 axel. this unit is rated up to 3 axles. I look at it like this way, when I trade in my BMW I will take my P3 with me. etrailer is amazing with the support & products they provide and I highly recommend them to anyone who asks me.

Have a 2021 Durango SXT. Bought the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires, Tekonsha POD Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Time Delayed, and Replacement Brake Control Plug-In Harness for Tekonsha and Draw-Tite Brake Controller 12" Long. 7 wire was easy to install but break controller a little harder do to the vehicle I have. Previously bought tow hitch and 4 way wire trailer plug from etrailer. Very happy with all.

by: Ganders02/23/2024

One year review - Exactly what we needed to go along with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller (etrailer item# 90885) and a Class V hitch on a 2008 Toyota Tundra pulling a 1999 WW (WW Trailer Manufacturing) 2 axle horse trailer. We initially also ordered the Tekonsha brake control adapter for Toyota, but it did not work for our particular application, so the installer went a different direction.

by: Jimmy05/22/2024

This kit had everything I needed to do the job. The only thing I did different than the instructions was run the cable in the interior instead of the exterior to protect it better from the elements or any damage that could occur when driving.

by: Lawrence04/15/2024

Great kit, I have purchased two, one for a 2023 Subaru Outback another for a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. Both worked flawlessly! Plenty of length to reach engine bay to the rear bumper. Would buy again!

by: James 03/28/2024

Easy to follow instructions and well made materials. Only plus would be heat shrink connectors but no one else provides those either. As a diesel mechanic I can say this is a quality kit.

by: GireviK03/03/2024

Install went fine and all but after a single winter and less than 6 months - the internals oxidized and rusted out completely, a few pins broke. I blame poor design and weak materials, see pictures. Not sure what do to about it at this point, total junk.

I know that weather and road debris can take a toll on harnesses however I am surprised that it did in a short time. To help with longevity you can use dielectric grease, such as part # 11755, on the pins when making the connection to the trailer. Keep on eye on the bracket and use a rust resistant spray paint like Rustolem to touch it up. Some with use wire loom like part # 7509-1 to wrap around the wires to help better protect them. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

by: David03/03/2024

The Universal installation kit #ETBC7 arrived with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller. Everything is in great condition and is exactly what I needed. The installation instructions are straight forward and easy to understand. I can't wait to get everything installed so I can get my trailer on the road. I'll give an update after it's installed.

by: Levi05/01/2023

It fits and works though required a modification, I think mine might have just been a bad part out the factory.

The install wasn't too bad but I spent way too long trying to figure out why my left turn signal was showing as tail lights and my tail lights were showing as my left turn signal. Turns out the wiring was wrong on the 4 pole connector (picture attached). I wasn't sure which end was wrong (the 4-pole adapter, or this adapter) so I cut and swapped two of the wires on the 4 pole adapter to make it work correctly. Definitely an issue with the manufacturing process, but the dealership wanted $2,700 to add a receiver and 7 way. Buying all the parts (and a new brake controller) from here was only around $700.

For anyone curious about this model Jeep. The main battery is under the drivers seat, it makes this install super easy because you don't have to bring anything through the firewall. I brought my wires through the small vent behind the plastic rear-quarter panel (big piece of plastic that wraps around the back) on the drivers side, then just under the carpet up to the battery. Once there I removed the rest of the grey layer from the wires, cut the black wire, and continued with the white wire and rest of the black wire to under the dash (for brake controller power and to send the signal all the way to the back).

by: Brian 04/22/2024

Worked perfect and looks great. The 7 way plugged into the existing 4 way. That left the White(ground), black(hot), yellow(reverse) and blue (brake controller). With my Nissan Pathfinder,I only had to connect the white and black wires and this 7 way pin was setup.

by: Brad 05/10/2024

fair amount of work installing this on my e350 but everything I got with the kit was spot on and worked well.

by: Christopher 03/24/2024

Easy install (I did not wire in the hot wire for the inside brake controller). I am using a Bluetooth brake controller that is working very well for my needs.

by: Christopher05/26/2021

1 year review. I installed this product on my 2017 Toyota Highlander. As a person inexperienced with vehicle electrical systems, I found the installation challenging but achievable. I appreciated the advice and videos from etrailer.com. I liked the final fit and finish on my vehicle when using manufacturer hitch and bumper kit.

After 1 year of usage, I have found 4 specific opportunities for improvement.

1. Water accumulation in the plug cover flap. After rain, I flip the flap up and water spills out of the crevice in the flap. There is also a small amount of water in the plug itself, but unclear if there is rain entering the socket or if this is from spillage when the flap is opened. This needs to be sealed to protect the plug!

2. Poor quality top mounting nuts and bolts. I overtightened one of the top bolts and it sheered off. I replaced it with zinc plated hardware. In my picture you can see after 1 year of use the included bolt on the left is corroded and the hardware store bolt looks new.

3. Poor quality front mounting screws. You can see the 4 rusting screws in the picture. These are designed to be exposed to weather, so I was surprised to find rust forming after the first few weeks.

4. Poor quality attachment point for the flat connector. The 4 way slips onto the side of the 7 way mount and is held on by rubber friction. It never stays in place and is always dangling.

One other suggestion is to offer a kit made for the newer wireless brake controllers. It could have less wire, fewer connectors, and cost less.

Because of the above problems I will have to replace the 7 way plug soon. Therefore I gave the product only 2 stars and would not recommend purchasing it.

by: Robert03/06/2024

My truck didn't need extra wire, they sent the wrong mounting bracket for the plug, and the bolts beban to rust within a few weeks. They should use stainless.

by: Scott 04/28/2024

Absolutely everything you need to convert to 7 pole. Install was pretty straight forward on my 1996 Suburban. I will be buying another one for my new project truck.

by: Karly06/14/2022

I've had this trailer hitch on my 2013 Outback for a year now and love it! I tow a popup tent trailer and this hitch works excellently. It was a solid half day installation but my Dad and I were able to knock it out no problem! I love the discreet look of this since I'm not often towing the trailer. I couldn't recommend enough! Way better than the bulkier, less tasteful versions available.

  • The most basic wiring set up for your Tundra would be a 4-pole connector, like that included with part # C59496. A 4-pole provides a connection for basic lighting functions like running lights, turn signals and brake lights. If your trailer features electric brakes, a brake controller and a 7-way connector like that included with the ETBC7 would be needed. I had a Prodigy P2 controller in my last pickup and was really pleased with it. So wanted to install the same thing in my newer truck Everything worked smoothly on installation. Made the necessary adjustments to controls after hooking to the trailer and it works great!

by: Jim10/30/2015

Installed this in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport. I thought that I would add some input on installation that would help others.
I found a way to route the power distribution wires in the frame of the Jeep that did not require the use of a fish tape. If you look at the frame just behind the rear tire you will see a hole in the face of the frame. Start pushing the wire bundle foreword. It will rise up and over the U shaped frame portion of the rear axle and then down along the passenger compartment area. About there, you will be running out of pushing stiffness. Look for the wire bundle to appear at a similar hole in the frame in that area. Grab it a and pull out approximately 4 feet and then push it right back in the same hole going foreword. This time you will look for the wire bundle to appear at again a similar hole just foreword of the driver compartment. Now is the time to grab it and start heading up to the engine compartment outside the frame. Do the same procedure for the wire going aft for the plug end of the installation. For the wires going through the firewall, Jeep has conveniently added a nice foam lined hole to route wires through. You will see this hole position in the attached photo with a green wire coming through. The plastic cover around the steering column pulls down from the top and hinges at the bottom. Remove the metal plate with two bolts to get to the brake switch. Twist and pull the brake switch out foreword and go for the brown stripped wire as your brake circuit. Do order the LONG frame bracket adapter for the switch plug at the rear. To drill the steel for the supplied plug bracket just takes too long. Now that you have it installed you will notice that the power will remain on the unit after you turn the key off. Don't sweat this as it will not stay on long. I doubt a few milliamps draw is going to kill your battery!

Working great would recommend to all.

by: Philip03/04/2016

This is the second one I purchased. The first was 10 years ago and installed in my 06 GMC. It has worked flawlessly allowing for safe and smooth stops from normal braking to a few of the panic stops that had to made over the years. The new owner of the truck likes the way it works too. I have multiple trailers and with one initial setup on the lightest trailer was able to tow all of them without changing anything but the boost setting to compensate for the different trailer weights.
When needing for a controller for my 07 Silverado there was no other unit that would fill the bill. This P2 looks the same except for the blue display instead of the red. The install took 20 minutes using the direct fit cable ordered with the controller. Setup was easy as with the first unit. I wanted the placement above the parking brake pedal so the OBD II connecter had to be moved. I did the same with the 06 GMC. It is a comfortable place to reach and it keeps the light away from the passenger's eyes at night.
As good as the Tekonsha controller is it is even a sweeter deal buying it from etrailer. The quick shipping, excellent pricing and knowledgeable staff are second to none in customer service.

Tekonsha recently updated the Prodigy P2 with an auto-dimming feature for the display so no more worries about being blinded at night.

by: Larry L.04/29/2015

The online video showing the installation of the Prodigy P2 trailer brake control into a 2011 Ford Ranger was excellent! It made the installation into my Ranger simple and straight forth.
I have yet to hook up to my travel Trailer and adjust it for brake setting, but all readout displays thus far are as stated in the instructions.
Having previously installed the trailer connector, I did not purchase the installation kit and in retrospect for cost effective and simplicity would recommend anyone to purchase the kit along with the controller.
I believe I am going to be very pleased with this product.
Thank you

by: Carl05/15/2023

the controller has great reviews, I got it because my factory controller wasn't working well with the new camper that has electric/hydraulic brakes and I was experiencing a 5 second lag for the trailer brakes to come on. this controller works better with a 2 to 3 second lag, need to try a couple different combos on settings, have the boost at 3 (per recommendations) and gain at 2.5 and under hard braking it locks up the trailer tires. going to try boost on 2 and bump up the gain and see if that works better.

Etrailer Expert

Katrina B.

5/19/2023

Has doing this corrected the lag?

Carl B.

6/22/2023

That worked a little bit better, it seems as though the brakes are either off or locked up. If I set the gain to more than 3 the trailer locks up the tires, if I adjust the gain down a little then it seems like they don’t come on at all. A very small window. Same with the factory integrated controller.

by: Matt02/24/2014

very nice controller, very smooth and you don't have to mount it flat!! e trailer is the best company i ever worked with. they have pics, video, email support(exellent) and just flat out make it easy for you to do it yourself instead of paying some dirt bag $300 to install at your local trailer shop. i also installed kit #ETBC7 and once agian it was awesome. COMPLETE with DETAILED directions. i'm not a mechanic or hack employee at local trailer shop....BUT dealing with etrailer and there parts made my install very easy and CLEAN!!!

Your products are awesome. Ive had zero issues with it and 5 of my friends purchased and installed the same set up in there trucks. Thanks again for the great products and excellent support.

by: Calvin03/14/2024

Great product! Since I pull my goose neck with electric brakes, with my semi truck tractor, it acts as a interface between the air brakes and the electric trailer brakes, and acts as a Johnson bar if I need to get the trailer back under control.

by: David03/03/2024

The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller arrived on time and is just what I needed. The installation and operating instructions are easy to understand and should make installation a breeze. I'll give an update after I get it installed.

by: Brad 05/10/2024

Been one year of ownership now and this controller has performed very well. I would by again for sure.

by: Kevin P.03/16/2011

I didn’t have a good location that was reachable while driving so I mounted the controller on top of the dash. I leveled the bracket with a spacer and ran the harness by an access panel. I used about 70’ of the duplex wire due to running the cable to front and then back to the house batteries inside the coach.
The access panel made it easy to make the connections and run the wires through the firewall.
I mounted the 40 AMP and 30 AMP circuit breakers up front in the main fuse panel box. I drilled a hole through the box and firewall to run the wires from the brake controller to the breaker and to the blue wire for the tow connection at the back of the coach.
I ran the battery connections to my house batteries up front instead of using the engine batteries in the back.
I found the brake connection wire under the coach in front directly below the brake pedal.
I mounted the converter in a beam in the back with lots of zip ties

For ford ranger 2010 and perhaps other years:Be aware that the video contains the wrong instruction for the 2010 ranger. In wiring the brake light wire, the switch shown being tapped into gives reverse braking sensing, that is, it is 12 when the brake is not applied, but 0v when it is. I found elsewhere that the correct wire is the 2nd connection on the 5 pin plug that rides on the brake itself. This is no comment on the original video, which was excellent, and referred to the 2011 ranger model.

Patrick B.

8/19/2013

Wire colors can and do change often. We offer the colors that we find in our videos as a starting point, but even if you have a 2011, it is best to double check and make sure to positively identify the wire color first.

The bracket was already on the Vehicle, its in between the light switch and the parking brake release lever where OEM controller would be if equipped , it requires a little modification to fit.

Used in conjunction with harness kit for my 2002 tundra, this year has no provisions for towing trailer with electric brakes.
The controler itself has proven itself nicely, with no issues with installation or use, adjust easily.
The mounting location I chose may have some slight interference issues with legs on taller people, but I have not had any @ 5'11". The truck is a midsized so room is more limited. I'm towing a tandem 14' trialer with 4 seat RZR, tracking and stopping is perfect, even under hard breaking.

Great Brake Controller, used it with the Universal Install Kit for Brake Controllers and No-Drill Mount Bracket, Short - 18140. It only took me 2.5hrs to have it fully installed in my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2013. Videos were great. Also having some 1/4in water tubing helped for phishing wire thru frame.
Wish I had watched the video a couple of times before buying and also purchased the extra wire to go from the battery to the brake controller, but had extra wire from another project that worked.
This brake controller works great as we tow a <3500lbs Travel Trailer with our Jeep.
Comes with a great card that helps with settings, keep it in the glove box for future reference.

by: David W02/16/2019

I recently bought a 2018 Chevy Silverado LTZ. It was equipped with a towing package but no brake controller. Not wanting to alter the interior of the truck too much, I called etrailer for advice. Robert S was very helpful. He suggested the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller and jumper wire that I was able to hide neatly under the dash using an existing screw. I have been very pleased with etrailer and their suggested product.

by: Dale 01/14/2024

My 2002 Tundra was not manufactured with the modular plug for trailer brakes. While searching for the solution, the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 showed up with a complete installation video from front to back (battery to hitch).
Now installed, it performs great with my trailer rig.

by: Rob Rod03/28/2014

I installed this model 90885 Prodigy P2 Brake Controller using the ETBC7 Brake Controller Wiring Kit on my 2007 Dodge Nitro. On a scale of 1 to 10, I consider myself about an 8 where it comes to automotive mechanical and electrical work. I also strive to get as close to perfection as possible. To do the job right, it did take some time and it did require paying close attention to the directions for both the wiring kit and the controller. However, the directions were "right on", and all the needed "goodies" to do the job were furnished. My hat is off to ETRAILER for the informative videos they provide and their customer service, which includes very quick shipments of their products.

This is the second P2 brake controller. Smooth dependable breaking. Item arrived quickly and price is very good.

No problems at all with this unit. Dependable and smooth braking while pulling fully loaded trailer.

by: Clayton 02/12/2024

Very easy to install with the help of a video that shows how to to find the wiring. I could not find the wiring in the cab until finding the video online and because of that help I ordered the brake controller.

by: Dan 06/05/2023

Used it for a season’s worth of towing camper with my 2015 Chevy Traverse LTZ and it works great. Easy to use and effective. With a controller installed there is a big difference in braking; right away you could tell that the camper was braking and taking a lot of load off my Traverse. Good product, and easy to install on my vehicle that has a OEM tow package. Installed nicely right up under the right side of the steering wheel, mounted on the lower plastics.

by: Jake M.06/24/2014

I installed the brake controller a week or two ago in my 2013 GMC Sierra 1500. I had one just like it in an older Duramax that the previous owner installed--I went with the same product. I had the chance to use it this afternoon to pull a few tons of #57 stone. Trailer plus load I figure about 6000 pounds behind the truck. Pictures are attached.
This is the first 1/2 ton truck I've owned in nearly 10 years and worries how it would do with heavier loads. This controller made a world of difference and really maximized the use of my truck. Great product and I highly recommend it to anyone needing a good controller.

  • Both the P2 part # 90885 and the P3 part # 90195 brake controllers are top of the line controllers that would work great for your 2014 Dodge Durango with tow package. All you would need for installation is the adapter part # TK93VR. Functionally they both would work exactly the same. The advantage to the P2 is the simpler install and setup. The P3 requires a little more user interaction but it also has more bells and whistles like the ability to save trailer setting presets if you have...

  • Comparing the Tekonsha Prodigy and P2 Trailer Brake Controllers
  • Both the Prodigy, 90185, and the P2, # 90885, have an accelerometer in them that operate the same way. The P2 has some upgrades that allow it to be installed a full 360 degrees in the direction of travel. It can also be used with electric and electric over hydraulic braking systems. If you are in need of one of these features, then upgrading would be the way to go. If your Prodigy is working well, I would stick with it. I have included a link to the installation details for the P2 for you.

  • The Prodigy P2 brake controller # 90885 and the Primus IQ # TK90160 share some basic features, but there are many differences. The most obvious ones are the displays and appearances of the units, which are connected to the usability of the brake controllers while towing. The P2 has a brighter, light-colored LED display that is easier to read than the red LED display on the Primus, and the P2 also features a rotary lever for the manual braking feature, while the Primus uses an older style...

  • Recommended Brake Controller When Towing Enclosed Trailer With Electric Brakes
  • The Primus, part # TK90160 and Prodigy P2, part # 90885 are both nice brake controllers, but there are some differences. The P2, part # 90885, uses a lever on the underside for a manual override where the Primus uses a slide that some people have said they have problems with the slide sticking depending on how they grip and operate the slide. The P2 has buttons on the face for adjusting settings and navigating through the menus. The Primus IQ uses a dial and one button to adjust settings. The...

  • Choosing Between Tekonsha Prodigy P2 and P3 for Farm Trailer with Electric Brakes
  • Both the Prodigy P2 and the P3 are compatible with both electric and electric over hydraulic braking systems. The primary difference between the P2 and the P3 is that the P3 has what I would call a more user-friendly display that will provide diagnostic information about your braking system at a glance. The P2 also provides diagnostic information, but instead of directly spelling out the nature of the problem, the display will provide an error code that you will need to look up in the...

  • Parts Needed to Install a Prodigy or P2 Trailer Brake Controller on a 2012 Toyota 4Runner
  • If your 2012 Toyota 4Runner came with the factory tow package, you will just need the wiring harness # 3040-P. Plug it into the back of the brake controller and plug the other end into the connector on the vehicle that is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Make sure to ground the additional white wiring on this harness so the brake controller will work. The Prodigy and P2 are similar controllers. The...

  • Choosing Between Tekonsha Prodigy P2 or Time-Delayed Brake Controller for 2002 Chevy Silverado
  • I'd choose a proportional controller like the P2 over a time delayed controller, every time. The # 90885 Prodigy P2 is a proportional controller. A proportional controller uses an internal accelerometer that determines how quickly and the tow vehicle is braking. It will then send the proper amount of braking force to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer brake at the same rate for safe, effective and predictable braking. The Reese 80550 Pilot brake controller which we haven't...

  • What is the Difference Between Prodigy P2 and P3 Brake Controllers
  • The biggest differences between the Prodigy P2 brake controller, # 90885, and the P3 brake controller, # 90195, are the display, buttons and look of the controllers. I like the buttons and display on the P3 controller myself because the display uses actual words for setup and troubleshooting rather than the display codes that the P2 uses. This makes it easier for me to know that I am adjusting the correct function or see the trouble shooting codes without referring back to the installation...

  • Recommended Proportional Trailer Brake Controller for 2014 Honda Odyssey
  • There are two primary types of trailer brake controller, the time-delayed variety and the proportional variety. Both use the same 4-wire installation process and both do the same thing, but how they do it differs. Time-delay type brake controllers like the PowerTrac # 39523 offer the advantage of easier mounting since they do not need the same precise leveling and correct forward-facing orientation that is required for a proportional unit like the Prodigy P2 # 90885. Time-delay units...
